I have worked with physicians on a dialy basis as a Pharma rep for the last 30 years. I am not in awe of Doctors just because they have MD or DO next to their names. I know how to tell the good from the bad. Trust me when I tell you that these guys are GREAT. 1) Dr. Epply has done two right shoulder jobs on me. The first to fix a botched job by another physician along with a current AC break and the second time around with him I had split the rotator cuff. Ultimately he was unsuccessful with the second repair. The damage was too great. Years upon years of overuse took its toll. I will need a new shoulder in no more than a couple of more years and I damn well plan on going back to Epply. He is a gentleman and a personable surgeon as well as a highly skilled one. 2) Dr. Honsik has done non-interventional work on my shoulder and my forearm. His work injecting my forearm tendon repair with Wharton's Jelly was outstanding. Within 6 weeks a 75/35% tear resolved itself without PT. He has a fantastic sense of humor and is open to discussing treatment options. Look... I don't need to add anything more to a 6 week resolution to a massively torn tendon. Tha speaks for itself. 3) Dr. Mann has replaced the P. Brevis in both ankles and he will be doing the right one again, six years after as it snapped again. His work was superb. It is just that I have congenital deformity that causes this. This time around as he discovered the root cause and he will be going in on this Thursday the 6th to replace that tendon and to reconfigure my heel and metatarsal so that this will never happen again. He is a quietly confident and competent surgeon who I trust completely. He is not brusque nor does he have a bad bedside manner like some people have complained about. He is a serious man (no pun intended) who does serious work and does it well. Don't go to him with vague information. He is there to do his job and if you treat this as a serious matter then you will get serious attention. To be frank, I find him personable, approachable and willing to discuss alternatives to his current methods. Just know what you are talking about. I trust him enough to let go of a particular surgical add-on that I had been considering based on his personal experience and opinion. He is the surgeon that I trust and I trust him enough to go right back to him after the previous surgeries. He is my chosen "ankle guy" and I am quite happy with him. You will be too. 4) The Staff and the PA's: They are sweet, nice and competent to a fault. My disability paperwork was handled every time with almost no challenges. This time around we had a hiccup or two but that solely due to this being filed during the Christmas holidays. When alerted that there was info the State and Met Life were waiting on, they jumped on it and got it pushed through. They are fun, funny, personable, competent and you can trust them. I have had other work done with other docs. My first shoulder was an ortho in SF who was an utter prick. I will never mention his name but I will never go back to him. I had my broken neck repaired with a four level ACDF by an Ortho at John Muir and he did a great job. I will leave him a review later as he is from another practice... as is his colleague who repaired my lumbar spine injury early last year between L4 and L5. He too is a great surgeon and I will leave him a review later... but take note... I am returning to Cal Sports and Ortho, not to John Muir after four surgeries and three non-interventional procedures with them. Why? Because they are that good. If I didn't keep breaking things then all their good work would have lasted me a lifetime. I have had more experience with Orthos than most people. I have thirty years of working with health care providers every day. Trust me when I tell you that I know the good from the ok from the downright bad. "Cal Sports Ortho", Epply, Mann and Honsik are "My Guys". You could do much worse... I'm not so sure you could do better. Trust me when I tell you that you can trust them.

Dr. Mann walked into the room, asked me about my knee, and as I started to explain my history of knee issues he cut me off and snapped "So what's the current issue?!" He then moved my knee back and forth for 90 seconds and handed me a xeroxed list of physical therapy exercises and told me that it's runners knee (as I said...) I left practically in tears - this is an issue I knew I had, but wanted to get professional help. His blatant disrespect for a new client was abhorrent- there is nothing worse than having a doctor invalidate your pain. Needless to say I will not be returning to Dr. Mann and will be taking my business elsewhere.

Like a lot…read moreof active people, I thought I could just "run through it" and that it would resolve on its own. The main obstacle was honestly a mix of stubbornness and not wanting to slow down my training. I came in with a sports hernia and ongoing hip flexor issues. At my baseline, I was running about 60 miles a week and playing soccer twice weekly. By the time I sought help, I was down to ~20 miles a week and had completely stopped playing soccer. It was frustrating and honestly a bit concerning given how central activity is to my routine. Before PT, I tried the usual things--rest, stretching, some generic strengthening exercises, and modifying my running--but nothing really addressed the root problem. I'd improve slightly and then regress again. I chose Pro+Kinetix because of their reputation for working with athletes and their focus on performance-based rehab rather than just symptom management. I wanted someone who understood not just how to get me out of pain, but how to get me back to a high level of activity. Working with Dr. Jose Gonzalez Mejia was a game changer. What stood out was the specificity--everything was tailored: targeted strength work, movement pattern corrections, and a very intentional, progressive return-to-load plan. This wasn't a cookie-cutter program. He also did a great job explaining the why behind each exercise, which made it easier to stay consistent and confident in the process. As a patient, the experience was extremely professional and focused. Sessions were efficient, hands-on, and goal-oriented. It felt like a true partnership in getting back to performance, not just passive treatment. The impact has been huge. I'm now back up to ~50 miles per week and have started playing soccer again--something that felt pretty far off when I first came in. More importantly, I feel stronger and more resilient than before the injury, with a much better understanding of how to manage load and prevent recurrence.

I can't recommend Pro+Kinetix Physical Therapy, and specifically Dr. Lorraine, enough. After a hip…read moreinjury, I worked with Dr. Lorraine over 10-15 sessions and saw dramatic improvements in my strength and mobility, ultimately returning to all of my pre-injury athletic hobbies without pain. What sets Pro+Kinetix apart: you get a full hour with your therapist (not the rushed 30-minute sessions I've experienced elsewhere), and you always work with the same person. That consistency made a world of difference. Dr. Lorraine not only built a structured, effective recovery plan, but she genuinely listened to my concerns and gave me the confidence that I'd get back to my normal, and I did. She also sent me home with a toolkit for both ongoing hip strength/mobility maintenance and to manage any future flareups, should they occur. My insurance didn't cover the cost, but I can say without hesitation that it was worth every penny.

I started training downstairs in the Performance Training office with Allie a couple years ago and am so glad that I did. Allie has tailored our training sessions and my home workouts to whatever I've needed, which has varied a lot since I started working with her. I've dealt with medical conditions and new injuries that have required us to make adjustments, and she has never had a problem coming up with ways to continue working toward my goals. She is perceptive, thoughtful, and always a pleasure to work with. I'm now back to running and playing soccer, and even though I'm several years older than when I last did those things regularly, I feel more confident in my ability to avoid major injuries and recover from the inevitable small ones thanks to the work I've been doing with Allie. The other trainers and staff seem great as well, and everyone here seems to have good attitudes and senses of humor. I think they all have different specialties and I would gladly work with any of them, though Allie is the best. It's a great place to train, the atmosphere is fun and they will push you and guide you in all the right ways.

Before the visit: I broke my ankle and scheduled an appointment with him earlier this year. Not only did he not respond to me asking for confirmation of the appointment, but he tried to cancel my appointment 10 minutes before the scheduled time. He wasn't even apologetic about it. During the visit: This was my first time breaking any of my bones so I was unsure about everything. THANKFULLY I avoided the pressure he was giving me to have a surgery and asked to think about it. Looking back, it was quite upsetting that he never gave me all the important information about getting surgery (healing time, the cons of having foreign materials put into your body, etc.). After the visit: I also asked to call Chang after the appointment with a few more questions about surgery (the whole call took around 5 minutes or less). He ended up charging me for that call, initially labelling it as a regular appointment and changing it to a "telemedicine appointment" after I told them what the call was about. Really??? Not only was I not informed that I would be getting charged for this call (he didn't say it would be considered a "telemedicine appointment") BUT the call only lasted for 5 minutes with no diagnosis or x-ray--just me asking simple questions!!! Because of all the vague answers and overall negative experience, I decided to consult other doctors I trusted afterwards and they all said the opposite of Chang: that I SHOULDN'T EVEN CONSIDER surgery at all. It's been months since then and my ankle has healed perfectly (I went to another doctor closer to home who was way nicer, straightforward, and encouraging).

Anyway, this past April 25, I was playing ball and running down the court, when suddenly felt an intense pain in my right knee out of nowhere -- no pop, no impact, no twist. i had to it shut down immediately. For 6 weeks, I couldn't jump or run. Given that I generally work out 5-6 days a week, this was not fun. I was doing everything I could to rehab on my own without success. The problem was in my diagnosis. In addition, my orthopedic chiropractor (who is amazing) also was stumped. Enter Dr. Chang. I went to his Telegraph Avenue office last Thursday morning. He examined my knee and the surrounding leg parts to assess the situation. He also asked me for my perspective/description of what happened and how it felt and asked me to explain how I had been treating it. This is where his teamwork approach was demonstrated. It's important for a patient to feel heard and perhaps even contribute to the solution. After putting all the data together, Dr. Chang concluded that my IT band was abnormally tight/stressed and was creating a domino effect in other parts of my leg -- and ultimately causing my knee cap/patella tendon to be tight and and off track, thus, creating some kind of havoc. Dr. Chang showed me some exercises and videos and I did some further research myself. I don't know whether the explanation is magical or scientific (or both), but after puttiing in a couple hours of rehab the next two days, I was playing full court basketball by Saturday morning. I will continue to do the work and see how things play out. I really appreciate Dr. Chang and would recommend that anyone with orthopedic issues, get his valuable opinion.
