I booked a three-night stay - Dec 26, 27, 28 2016 - in a 493 King Street suite, Charleston, SC through VRBO. The owner was listed as Kevin High, however I later learned that this is a front for Walk Away Stays, LLC. I was switched out of the unit that I booked and paid for, forced to disrupt our stay with a move, and given two very unacceptable replacement units. The following is the full story. A couple of hours prior to our arrival I was contacted by Kelsey at Walk Away Stays and informed that the unit we had booked had a burst water pipe, water damage, and although the cleaning service was working to get it cleaned up, it would not be available for our stay. (The cleaning service told me that the unit had actually been double booked. Kelsey at Walk Away Stays stood my her story and said the cleaning service was "confused", it was actually a different unit that had been double booked. Seriously?!?) Walk Away Stays, LLC found two different units for us - one night (12/26/16) at 154A Spring Street and two nights (12/27 and 12/28) at 248A Ashley Ave. To make up for the disappointment, trouble, and inconvenience Kelsey promised the following: 1) Both of the units were at least comparable to the 493 King Street unit that we booked and paid for. 2) Although we would have to be out of the 154A Spring Street unit at the normal checkout time of 11:00am, the 248A Ashley Ave unit would be cleaned and ready before the normal 3:00 check-in. Walk Away Stays would call me as soon as the Ashley Ave unit was ready. 3) Walk Away Stays would give us a $50 gift certificate to a local restaurant. None of these promises were kept. Upon arrival at 154A Spring Street, I was devastated. It was in no way comparable to 493 King Street and the convenience of being steps away from great restaurants. It was next door to a hostel in a very sketchy neighborhood, and about one mile further away from the areas we had planned to walk to. I called and left a message that this was unacceptable and to please call me back. My call was never returned. I then called the after-hours number and left another request for a return call. That call was not returned either. They did text me the access code to the wifi - which, btw, did not work. They didn't return my request for help with that, either. On 12/27, the day of our move to 248A Ashley Ave, we did not receive a call and were not allowed into the unit early. I called Walk Away Stays and spoke to Allie. She claimed to know nothing about any promises or the situation with the 493 King Street unit and said she would look into it. She never called me back. Before leaving Charleston, I called and spoke to Kelsey again. I told her that she had not followed through on any of her promises to make things right for us. The substitute units were not acceptable. We weren't allowed "early checkin" to the second unit. I never received the gift certificate. She said they had been too busy. I told her that I would be posting negative reviews and she said "OK. Fine." I'll probably never know if a pipe really broke, or if Kelsey lied to cover up a double booking (intentional or not?) However, based on the complete failure to make things right for us and follow through on the promises made, I believe the cleaning service and I think that Kelsey and Allie at Walk Away Stays, LLC flat out lied to me. A legitimate company would return calls and make sure that customers got what they paid for, or in the case of unavoidable situations were fairly compensated for their loss. Walk Away Stays - Not the nice condo at 493 King St that we booked. Scam! - Property Management Near Me - Charleston, South Carolina

With Hurricane Florence headed for Charleston, we were hit with another unforeseen dilemma regarding our relocation to Charleston from out of state. All businesses closed, all communication had shut down, and all hopes of finding a decent rental became one big question mark. We had to play the waiting game from afar. As soon as businesses reopened, we called Walk Away Stays as a temporary landing zone until we could find a more permanent solution. We were able to get in touch with Jamie. We explained our situation and within 24 hours we had secured the 248A property for a duration of two weeks. Jamie was very helpful, and we were fortunate something was still available considering our timeline to get to town. Walk Away Stays even lets you make payment (required in full with a pet fee, cleaning fee, and a refundable deposit) via credit card (with no processing fee), so that's a huge plus! We checked ourselves into 248A using the keyless door entry with a code they give you prior to arrival. 248A is a first floor unit (of a duplex) with 2 BR / 2 BA. Both bedrooms have California king beds and are quite comfy! There's a fully equipped kitchen and a washer and dryer. You are allocated one parking spot in the back of the house. Last but not least, they are dog friendly. Check-in is 3:00 pm, and check-out is 11:00 am. Considering our circumstances, we were able to have some semblance of normalcy due to the amenities that came with the rental (i.e. kitchen), making it feel almost as if we were home. 248A is such a great location! With King Street only 10-15 minutes away, we pretty much walked everywhere downtown and barely used our car. It is also centrally located with regards to Highway 17 to West Ashley one way and Mount Pleasant the other way. We couldn't have asked for a better location. My only complaints were they only had one roll of toilet paper for each bathroom and one paper towel for the kitchen. We ended up having to purchase additional toilet paper and paper towels to get us through our two-week stay. We also couldn't lower the thermostat lower than what had already been set, and there were some days it was extremely hot and almost unbearable. Keep in mind we stayed in the property in September. Keep those fans running, so the the place can stay somewhat cooler. It shouldn't be an issue in the fall or winter. In addition, my husband and I are extremely allergic to cats dander and had a tough time during our stay. There may have been cats here previously (as they are pet friendly). Overall, we had a pretty pleasant experience with Walk Away Stays and we'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an extended stay that feels more like a home (because it is) than a hotel. read more

RUN AWAY.... (Don't walk away) We were broken into. We stayed at one of Walk Away's properties on Line Street. When we returned after a wedding at the Francis Marion Hotel one of the connecting doors to the unit was open and money was missing from the table and from my wallet. The manager didn't believe me and said it "couldn't have happened". She went into a long explanation as to how this couldn't happen. Amazing! DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!! Kevin and the "team" at W.A.S. are HIGHLY unprofessional and seedy. We trusted them to "manage" our home for a summer and they failed on every account. We had damage to our property including a $1200 slab of marble broken, we had a cleaning lady stay the night in our home!!! To make matters worse they screwed up their books on EVERY rental and overpaid us. This led to us actually owing them money at the end of the summer which was problematic because we had NO IDEA we were being overpaid. They then threatened to take us to small claims court. As the name says: Walk Away!!! While our property had a great location, nothing else about it was even acceptable. The furnishings are the cheapest you can find, several pieces were broken. The bedrooms had NO windows or 2nd fire escape. I'm not sure how this is even legal. Several bachelorette parties in the building that were unbelievable loud and the management did nothing and said they were leaving in a few days. Strongly do not recommend. read more

Absolutely miserable experience!!!! My group of 7 arrive at check-in time along with ANOTHER group of 9 who also had booked the same condo as us in Folly Beach! This property management company DOUBLE BOOKED their ONLY property in Folly (so there couldn't have been any confusion there), and managed to "miss it" for about a month! Even the day of check in, I was reached out to regarding parking at the condo by someone at the company, and the other group had also spoken with someone from the company that same morning!! One group booked via airbnb, the other on VRBO. They cross-posted and never removed the listing. The two reservations were made about 5 days apart, not 5 minutes, so there was plenty of time to get that straightened out. SO once we confirm that it is double booked, they try and send my group of 7 out to West Ashley, about 30 minutes away with no beach! We booked where we did because of its close proximity to the beach and walking distance to restaurants, etc. Then, they try and get us to stay in downtown Charleston, another 30 plus minute drive to the beach. We had nowhere to stay for approximately 2.5 hours! Just stranded. Then they finally reach out with a property in Folly Beach that they had to find through another rental property company. HOWEVER, they refused to cover the difference in the stay so I ended up having to still pay EXTRA MONEY to get relocated 3 miles down folly beach!!! We had to drive our large group to dinner every night (which was one of the main perks of the first condo we booked) because we could walk everywhere (folly has very limited parking, especially for a large F250 truck). I have been so upset over how poorly this company managed that situation. The ONLY POSITIVE was that the employee Kelsey, who had only been there for 2 weeks (poor girl needs to run while she can), was very easy to reach and was trying her hardest to relocate us. With that being said, I wouldn't recommend this company to my worst enemy! I didn't even receive my entire refund, and managed to pay an extra 150 dollars or so in order to book a place that we were essentially forced on because we had no other choice, at no fault of our own! Fantastic deal. Myself and a group of girls stayed in one of the 229 King Street properties and it was wonderful. The unit we chose did not have a kitchen, but we didn't really need one -- uh, staying in downtown Charleston and I'm going to cook for myself??? I don't think so. The small kitchenette with mini fridge was perfect. The condo was clean, the rooms were large, beds comfortable, the place decorated so well, and location just what we needed. Christine, one of the property managers, was quick to respond to any of my concerns before arrival and I cannot say enough good things about this experience. One thing I was pretty peeved about was that the people above us had probably about 10 children with them that began stomping (I mean STOMPING) and tumbling around from 6am on. It was so, so loud. Not that this is any reflection of the experience with 227 as a whole, but wow. I need my beauty sleep and the gymnastics events going on above us just killed it for me. read more

We stayed from 5/23-29, 2012 and loved it. We booked found it through their website, http://www.227rentals.com/ First, it's much cuter than the photos - and they did a beautiful job with refinishing the place. The kitchen has all needed equipment, and a full refrigerator. The apartment also has a small washer and dryer. The only note I'd really want to convey was that it's labeled as a 1-bedroom, but it's really a very large studio in that the bed is part of the living space with no separation. The bed was comfy, the neighborhood was quiet. There is a bakery (also serving coffee) on the property. Most things are walkable from here: We walked from here to the Battery with no problem, and if you get tired it should be approx. $5 back using Yellow Cab. There are plenty of close restaurants - we loved the Hominy Grill which is two short blocks, The Black Bean Co., and also in walking distance is a grocery store Piggly Wiggly. We highly recommend this unit! read more

As an update, we have worked patiently with Walk Away Stays and over the 30-day rental period, they did not clean the apartment. Additionally, they did not return the security deposit even though the apartment was left significantly cleaner and in better shape then we found it. I cannot recommend that anyone rent from this business in the future. One more update. WAS won't respond to the Better Business Bureau complaint I filed and hasn't returned the security deposit. read more

227 Rentals was the perfect choice for our 6 person trip to Charleston. The apartment (#242A) provided ample space and facilities (3 queen bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 parking spaces, AC, wi-fi, TVs, kitchen and living room. Compared to prices on hotwire, we found 227 to be a far better bargain for the 6 of us. At a minimum, we would have had to get three rooms (given couples, girls to bathrooms ratios, etc.), and that would have been a lot more expensive. In addition, we enjoyed the communal feel of having a house vs. having individual hotel rooms. It gave us a lot more time to hang out together as a group in the mornings and between activities. If you follow the rules (e.g., take out the trash at the end, run the dishwasher and don't make a mess) 227 Rentals is completely reasonable about returning the security deposit in a timely manner. The house is spacious and pretty with lots of artistic touches and a large kitchen area. We felt completely safe in the neighborhood. Having a code on the door helped us greatly since we arrived on a delayed evening flight, and didn't have to contact anyone to check in. PARTING THOUGHT: we'll definitely leverage 227 Rentals again the next time we are in town! read more

WOW I sure loved downtown Charleston! The clean and peaceful setting of the unit we rented from 227 rentals made us feel like we were home! Christina and Kevin could not have been more helpful! We especially loved the location. We stayed at 227 Rutledge. We are walkers and the Wild Flour Bakery was a gem for sunday morning coffee and fresh pastry! Definately will return. 32 Vendue Range unit 401, I REPEAT, 32 Vendue Range unit 401, DO NOT STAY THERE!! I'm only writing this review to save you from making a HUGE mistake!! Maintained by: WALK AWAY STAYS We did not receive the welcome packet with instructions as to checking in/out and how to get the key. We called multiple times on our way on Saturday afternoon, no answer! Emailed 2 times as well, no answer until we were literally standing outside of the place at 9pm, with our 4 month old! Their response to not getting the welcome packet was " we don't know what happened", well you either sent it or you didn't! This place is absolutely disgusting, from the minute you walk in; the floors, the bed, the kitchen, the bathroom! Ok, let me explain exactly why I'm writing this. To start the floors are so dirty my husband and I would have to put our flip flops back on after we showered otherwise within 10 minutes our feet would be covered in dirt. The laminate wood floors have horrible water damage in the kitchen and are sticky, if you stand in one place too long you'll get stuck! The carpets are stained and smell of either animal or human pee, not sure! The bed is even worse, if you can believe that, it's a four post bed and one of the posts is broken, they have it just dangling by a tiny peg. It is a huge hazard, if it were to fall off it would really hurt someone! On the old nasty mattress they have put a 4 inch piece of foam from a craft shop on top, no mattress pad, thin nasty stained sheets on inside out!! Absolutely disgusting!!! Thankfully, I always travel with a pillow and blanket, I was able to take the gross feeling comforter, the flat sheet and ROCK HARD pillows off (the pillows are probably $4.99 pillows from Walmart). Not that there is anything wrong with Walmart just giving you an idea of what we are talking about!! I mean go out a buy a new spring mattress, they are very reasonably priced and while your at it get a mattress pad!!! Onto the kitchen, now being that the rest of the place is so gross I'm not feeling super awesome about touching the kitchen towels, the drawers and cabinets are so messy. I needed a pot to boil water in, it looked like a 3 yr old put the pots and pans in the cabinet, they basically all fell out when I opened the door! And then one of the fry pans was super dirty! I would be so embarrassed if that was my place!! Now for the "lovely" bathroom, first off the toilet wouldn't flush when we got there, my husband had to fix that! Which they would know if they had cleaned it before we got there! The bathroom faucet is loose and feels like you might break it when you turn it on, make sure you turn it on full blast otherwise all the water drips down the faucet all over the counter because it's a vessel sink! And the sink bowl is clear glass so around the drain it's a nasty green/black color, gross!! Looks and feels dirty!! After spending 4 nights there they still did not give us any directions; like how to check out, where to take the garbage, in what condition to leave the condo in, towels, sheets and dishes! We then called WALK AWAY STAYS to find out how to check out, what to do with the keys. Instead of leaving the keys on the counter and locking the door on our way out, we had to drive out of our way to drop them off! Horrible customer service! If you are looking for a place to stay or have someone manage you property, I would advise you to look elsewhere! Oh, I almost forgot..... We had a group of 8 that stayed @ 50 Spring street. This place was great. Very well appointed and nice. The kitchen was spacious and beautiful. The beds are comfortable and this place could easily sleep 9 people. It was within walking distance to King street and the harbor. I would definitely stay here again, but there are a few things to keep in mind: - This is a neighborhood that is being revitalized. The house was very nice, but not all the surrounding buildings are. Not a problem for me, but I would keep that in mind. - A member of our party didn't have the code to get in but easily entered through the back by wriggling the door handle. We did call the handyman out, but he couldn't fix it completely. Doesn't make you feel very safe. -We were supplied no garbage bags, cleaning solutions, or brooms. Makes for an extended stay with a group of people...untidy. - There were some unfinished remodeling of the facility: electrical sockets that were left open, fixtures lying about, but this wasn't that big of a deal either. Like I said, we loved the place. If we go back to Charleston with a group I would want this place. Just bring garbage bags and run to the store for some cleaning liquid. I believe the other aspects listed above are just about not having time to finish it out. I'm sure the lock situation will be remedied soon. read more

Avoid if possible. I tried twice to book with them. The first time, they redirected me to a website instead of simply answering my questions directly. Not only was the info on their website vague and unhelpful, but when I sent an email to confirm the price of one rental and book it, they raised the cost by over 50%! My second attempt proved just as fruitless when, again, I emailed to book the property (I tried to book it myself online, but a notice popped up asking that I had to email them first). Not only have they not responded yet, but that listing appears to have been pulled from the site - all of their properties seem to have been removed actually. AND, when I checked their website for the rental, it's now showing that it's fully booked (the property appeared completely unbooked for 2 months in a row on the website yesterday) PLUS they are applying additional fees that did not appear on the other websites they book through. Still, they have not responded to my inquiry and I don't anticipate they will. RED FLAG: Something is wrong with this "business." It seems very underhanded, the way they go about things. I would not trust it. I travel a lot and this kind of treatment I have never encountered. Southern hospitality? Not here. read more

The management company is great and very helpful. We had unit 227B which was gorgeous with its own little deck and wooden swing. The apartment was clean, the linens on the bed were extremely comfortable. The tv is equipped with roku(excuse my spelling, the thing that u can cast Netflix, etc). I thought parking would be a issue because it said in the description if you park in the driveway u may be blocked in, but parking on the street is fine. it's a shame I have to take a star away because of the bed frame. The bed itself is super comfy.....but no exaggeration you cannot even lift your head off your pillow without the frame squeaking extremely loudly. In the guest book that is in the unit multiple guest have complained about this. It's kind of upsetting since I am an extremely light sleeper. Given how nice this unit is, I think they could get a new frame. Also another thing that was odd, the first day we got here after driving all night from NY we checked in early, called the office and paid a small fee, no big deal. As we were taking a nap I woke up to a man standing in my bathroom. He was friendly and only wanted to check the hot water. I asked him to give me a couple minutes to make myself presentable, but they could have tried to contact me before hand.... read more

If I could give this company zero stars, I would. I booked a condo in downtown Charleston, South Carolina on April 6, 2017 and paid the first portion of the total amount. I received a confirmation e-mail that same day. I then received an e-mail requesting the second portion of the payment on June 12th (about a month prior to our stay) and I paid it in full. So, I was under the impression everything was processed considering I had paid this company a PRETTY PENNY to stay at their condo. On July 8th (just 6 days before I was supposed to check in), I received this email: Hi Wade, We are so sorry it looks like we had a double booking with this property. Your booking request didn't come through properly into our system and we found out about it only now. Please let me find another property for your stay. How about this one: https://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p4609625 Please let me know if it suits you! Naturally, my husband and I were extremely upset. We had booked this condo 4 months in advance and are receiving a notification less than a week before our check in that our condo is double booked. I emailed them back within 24 hours of receiving their message about the double booking and accepted their offer of the 2nd condo mentioned in the e-mail. The 2nd condo was just a block away from our original condo and still in the heart of downtown Charleston. Next, I received yet another email stating that the 2nd condo that was offered to us had already been booked. Hi Wade, I am so sorry for all this confusion. It looks like the second property was just booked by someone else. We do have another property open that we could move you to. I will go ahead and block this so no one else can book it. Please let me know what you think and I can send you a new confirmation email! Thank you for understanding. At this point my husband and I were absolutely outraged. My husband attempted to call the manager and the woman who answered the phone refused to let him speak to the manager. He attempted to ask her how 2 condos got double booked and she replied with "I don't have to tell you how." and then proceeded to hang up on him. I then looked into the 3rd condo they had sent us. It was SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than the first 2 condos and it was no where near the same area of downtown Charleston. At this point, we decided to cancel our trip altogether. We were so heartbroken and upset because this trip was for our 1 year wedding anniversary. This experience ruined the entire idea of us visiting Charleston. I rented 3 units at 563 King and each unit was dirty. One had an old slice of pizza under the pillow, hair in the shower, termites in the sheets, and dead bugs all around the sink One unit had a broken shower that had to keep getting fixed, another had broken AC. They wouldn't let me check in early because they were "cleaning" but finally agreed to let me check in for $35. I was so disappointed in my stay. Customer service was not very helpful and only refunded me a small portion of the cleaning fee. They then proceeded to leave a negative review on my page and lied and said I checked in 5 hours early at 8:59am when my flight was at 8:20am and I had to contact AirBnB myself to sort this out. All three units had problems and was overall gross to stay in. Would NOT recommend. read more

The rental is a one-bedroom with a full kitchen and is very cozy. I found it easy to book the apartment for our stay and appreciated how central the location was. We stayed on Spring St. What a great old house, even with the tight stairs at the 3rd level. :-) The apartment looked just as it did in photos. We had EVERYTHING we needed for our stay. We had 2 mishaps, but were able to contact someone right away. For one of the mishaps, Kevin came quickly and did what he could to make us comfortable. Monet and Alania(spelling?) were great about being available for us and we could not have asked for better...Well, no mosquitos...but that had nothing to do with the property. I would definitely stay with them again, should we come back to Charleston. read more

We really like "experimenting" with urban living and getting a feel for what it would be like to live on the Charleston peninsula. LOVED my rental on Spring Street. It was a second story rental, with an amazing piazza and entire wall of sliding glass doors. The kitchen was a perfect size, the bathroom was beautiful and updated, and the vaulted ceilings in the bedroom were awesome. I've rented this same location two or three times, and will definitely return! The included parking right outside the front steps is also a huge bonus, because anyone who knows Charleston knows that parking is rare. read more

I'm not surprised to see that there are so many reviews about how unprofessional this company is. My bridesmaids are planning my bachelorette party in Charleston and settled on this location after emailing back and forth with Walk Away Stays about pricing and availability. As you can imagine, coordinating 14 people, collecting money, and scheduling flights is not an easy task. When my friends went to put down the deposit they were told that there was a 3 night minimum, which was never communicated to us. I was told that we were dealing with a new person so I understand that mistakes are made but my real problem is how management dealt with it. I spoke with a manager and even her boss and they both refused to accommodate my group. They repeatedly told us that we could call back two weeks before our stay and if it was available, we could book 2 nights. This is after telling us over and over again that March is their busiest season and that the dates wouldn't be available. I've worked in hospitality and would never treat the situation the way that Kevin High and staff treated it. I have absolutely no desire to stay at any of their properties any more. read more

We used Walk Away Stays to help us out with a location shoot in Charleston. They were very easy to work with, were quick to respond to my emails/calls and even helped us out with our budget to find another location last minute. They are experienced with film crews so getting releases, etc were a walk in the park and they are super flexible which helps out when we need the property a bit longer then anticipated. I wish they were all over the country so I could utilize them more! read more

If I could give them a negative star I would. When we stayed at one of their locations 12/21/18 - 12/25/18 and paid $1782 and spent our Christmas there, we experienced a rat bit on my future son-in-law which drew blood on his toe, the rats ate a piece off my youngest son's wireless earbuds, 2 of the children were up most of the night in fear of being bit again. On the last night of our stay those 2 children didn't get any sleep due to multiple mice/rats running from the kitchen to the dinning room and back, right near where they were sleeping on the pull out sofa. They hid under covers in hopes of not having a rat jump on them again. We plugged a very large hole in the wood floors exposing the substrate, with aluminum foil. We sent pictures on of all items mentioned above and have not heard back from WalkAwayStays or the owners since Jan. 7th, when we were told we would hear back and the issue would be addressed. On a less important note, the 2 smaller bedroom in the back of the house don't have heat because there were no vents in either room, so the children got extremely cold all 4 nights. The Dryer did not work, though our oldest needed to use the washer and dryer. The washer had 'standing water in it's tub'. Instead of writing a nasty review on the app, we chose to try and resolve this through sending emails starting on 12/28/2018. We expect for WalkAwayStays to address the issue with us, and to contact us for resolution. This company does not care about it's customers, only about making money. Stayed at 226 B Rutledge Avenue, Charleston, SC, from October 14 to 17, 2012. Not a great neighborhood. Rutledge is a very busy street starting at 5:30 AM until 11:00 PM. Parking access is very small and requires skillful maneuvering, especially if there is another renter in unit A. During our visit, the master bedroom bath had a plugged shower/tub drain that required plunging to get it draining. In addition, the second bathroom had a broken towel rack that was on the floor when we arrived. We were told there was a washer/dryer available but this was broken with a note saying waiting for parts. There is a barking dog two doors down that starts up early every morning. There is a commercial remodel going on next-door that creates noise in the mornings. Overall, I would not stay at this location again and cannot recommend it. read more

A group of three of us stayed at 154C Spring St recently. The apartment was very comfortable for three people but would have been very cramped with more especially with the one bathroom. Here are the not so nice things: The apartment is in a sub par location in that it is at least a 30-45 minute walk from anything you'd want to see and it was also a little sketchy at night. The actual apartment was in decent condition and was pretty clean, but there was a pretty strong pet odor in the apartment. The apartment was also part of a compound and next to a hostel, so there was a lot of partying, noise, broken bottles, smoking, etc. every night and the steps, porch, and other common areas were constantly littered with bottles, cans, trash, solo cups, and such and were in perpetual disarray. Also (and perhaps most concerning) the codes that you use to enter the door are short and easily overheard and I suspect not properly programmed. There is also not a chain lock or secondary lock system so anyone can get in at any time with one code. We had multiple drunken strangers not just knock on the door but successfully enter codes and enter the apartment. We slept with a chair in front of the doorknob for the remainder of our stay. Here are some nice things: The description of the apartment itself on their website is accurate. It was clean, as mentioned. The washer and dryer is great. The staff was helpful and let us keep our bags in the office on a Sunday, There are a few fun restaurants and bars in the area (Warehouse and Hominy Grill for example). It is also extremely affordable, especially compared to other hotel/rental prices in Charleston. There were always plenty of parking spaces (though it's a bit tricky to get down the tiny alley way). read more

Don't walk - RUN away from Walk Away Stays Used Walk Away Stays for a longterm summer rental. I booked our house with them four months ahead of our start date, during the winter. Signed contract, put down money. A couple weeks later they called to inform me that the property they rented me was in fact NOT available. I offered to adjust my dates, do basically anything to make it work, but they claimed a former employee had failed to log into their system that the homeowner needed the property over the summer. I was very upset as we loved the house, but it seemed like an honest mistake. Eventually, they found us another property that we liked and we moved our rental agreement to that second house. Confident in our second rental agreement, we arranged for our car to be shipped, hired an au pair, made plane reservations and other expensive plans for our stay. THREE months later, a mere month before our start date, they called to inform us that yet AGAIN they could no longer rent us the house. This time they claimed that the owners decided to sell it. They could offer us no equivalent alternative property and, this close to our start date, there were few longterm housing options to be found anywhere. We were devastated and furious. Their only recompense was to refund our security deposit, which they did with much ceremony, as if we should be grateful that they were reimbursing us money for a service they never provided. Our requests for reimbursement for other non-refundable trip expenses were egregiously ignored. After reading reviews from other Walk Away Stays customers on Yelp who also had their property "unavailable" at the last minute, I'm starting to doubt the excuses the company gave me. What I do know for sure is that your rental agreement means NOTHING to Walk Away Stays. They can and will cancel on you. read more

My wife and I stayed at 209 Coming St. four 4 nights this past week. This is a very small former carriage house that's perfect for two people. It is very tastefully decorated. There is a tiny parking spot in the driveway (definitely best suited for a small compact car). We were in a medium size SUV and had a difficult time getting in the parking spot because of traffic on Coming St. (you have to take a wide swing to line up into the spot because of a small tree in the yard that had a bicycle chained to it... this is difficult to do when there are two lanes of traffic on the one-way Coming St). We were able to leave our car 90% of the time and walk everywhere because of the central location of the house. The house next door has super bright porch lights that shine into the carriage house, so we ended up putting extra blankets on the windows to make it dark enough. There were also some annoying college students staying next door to us, but that wasn't anything we can fault Walk Away Stays for. The washing machine in the carriage house leaked water all over the floor; but someone from Walk Away came within 10 minutes to pick up our wet laundry and dry it for us. Even with these annoyances, we had a great time and would even stay in this same place again if we come back to Charleston. Basically, there were some annoyances with the house itself but nothing that I can fault Walk Away for except maybe that should put blackout curtains in the bedroom of the carriage house to account for the house next door. read more

We stayed in 154C and had a great time. We enjoyed the walk to King St, etc even though it was a little rainy. We definitely got in our 10,000 steps and saw LOTS of the city on our way to other places. The parking was nice to have. Being next door to a fully-booked hostel was not a problem, everyone was relatively quiet and well-behaved. We only have a couple of issues with the apartment: the larger bed needs a proper blanket, and there are no hangers at all in the place. The bathroom and kitchen are better than most VRBO places I've stayed in. The Vietnamese taco place is only 4 doors down and delicious, and it's super close to Hominy Grill which was divine. I'll go back for sure! We didn't experience the problem with smell or noise that a previous reviewer had, and my companion is a super smeller so they must have taken care of that problem. read more

Learn from my mistake This place is not what is advertised for. We rented this place for 6 nights the beginning of June 2012 and from the moment we showed up it was horrible. First off the bathroom had patched holes in the wall 1/2 a towel bar mirrors or pictures taken down never was repainted before we showed up and no note to tell us what was going on. No grill, utensils, basic kitchen things including cutting board, sauté pans bowls, coffee maker, toaster. Wine glasses and mix match of dishes no ironing board. The place also was extremely filthy. Never was clean. Washing machine had left over soap in it fridge and refrigerator had missing shelves and was dirty. Stains on bedding. All we got was excuses that the last tenant left it in despair. I really don't care how it was left the fact is that we paid to use the unit for vacation and this is not what we paid for. The first thing we had to do is go out and buy basic cleaning supplies for example soap to wash dishes sponges, garbage bags. We addressed these concerns with Mark the owner and he seemed to what to fix it but when it came down to it, it was never followed through. The basic things seemed like we were asking to much. He reimbursed us for the first night because of what it looked like and how it was left but it never made up for what we had to deal with. Asked for an ironing board they said they will bring it right over, they rang the door bell and they left it leaning on the door when I open it up it came down on me. Asked for sauté pans over and over again finally brought them over from another rental room. They said you never know what people will need. They are basic kitchen supplies. They have a whole list of things you need to do before you leave and what how you are suppose to take care of the unit while you are there. But they don't practice what they preach. They said they if its unusual dirty they we charge you extra and they said "We clean after your departure, we do not renovate". I was hoping for southern hospitality and this is as far as you can get from it. ________________________________________________________________ I did contact 227 rentals as soon as we arrived. I called and talked to Christina regarding the unit. She said that I have to talk to the owner Mark because he is the owner for this until. I said that I didn't rent the unit from Mark I rented it from 227 rentals which is from you guys 227rentals. I tried to tell her what the problem was but she didn't want to hear it. She called Mark the owner for him to deal with the problems. After our vacation we arrived home and then I got an email from Kevin H. Asking how our stay was and I replied a picture means a 1,000 words, with the pictures. Kevin response was "I will forward this to the owner of the unit." I never posted this review until a month later. This is how they deal with things. We paid $160 a night including tax for this unit. I'm not expecting the Ritz! But I'm sure Hotel 8 doesn't have plaster covering the holes in the wall and the place looking like it has never been cleaned. It's probably 1/2 the price or even cheaper on what we paid. It might have been the cheapest you had but what you have on your website doesn't look like what we walked into. I know that you have to defend your business but I hope in the future you will not do this to other people. read more

My wife and I rented a 1 bedroom apartment in Charleston from Walk Away Stays for four days, May 16 to 20, 2015. We paid $788.83 for these four days, with the following charges: 4 days @ $149/day......................$596.00 Room tax.....................................93.83 Non-refund damage and cleaning fee....99.00 Because of a family emergency we had to cancel our stay a week or two in advance. Fortunately, Walk Away Stays was able to rent out three of the four days to new tenants. Over the course of the next 30 days I made numerous calls to inquire about a refund. The consistent response I received was that Kevin was responsible for processing refunds, but was out of the office. Ultimately I received a voicemail message from a Walk Away employee advising that Kevin had processed a refund for $281.87.Since that amount was the equivalent of less than 2 days rent (without taxes) I made numerous calls asking for an explanation from Kevin. Now, after more than a month without the courtesy of a return call, I have given up hope that I will get a response. read more
