He's seems so unhappy with his job so why not just leave the school and go where you're happy at? Because of how bad he runs the school I had to pull my kids out and take them to another school. I would not recommend sending your kids here if they're special needs.

The campus is nestled in Pearl city on E Komo Mai Drive. I am so beyond excited for him to start school with this legacy who has had the best reputation over numerous years. I do not know about you but my child gets rewarded for having a good week and getting 100% on his tests, but what kind of reward is it when it is not until the following week? There are simple ways to solve the schools short comings but it is if they truly want to; 1. Update and continuously update your website (i.e. calendar, teacher lists, events...) 2. Have an online classroom for parents to look at to make sure their child is doing the homework and has their daily/weekly progress reports (FOR ALL GRADES!). This would alleviate sooo much miscommunication between teacher and parents. (i.e. homework online used for online access to homework assignments, study materials and lesson notes and a parent portal that provides parents access to student attendance, progress reports, and report cards). Today our society is technologically savvy and so are the kids, why not keep up and in the process help the kids? Maybe if they did these updates there school might raise from a 6 on greatschool.com to maybe an 8 or 9.

Kids are the ones often affected by what happens as being in a military family. My husband and I can understand for we were both raised in a military family as well. The kids were great and full of spirit. In the classrooms, it was nice to see that they involved the kids in being responsible for various things. Each kid gets the chance to be in charge of something. It's a great thing for kids at their age to learn respect and responsibility before they get any older. All responsibilities that given to them are simple and ones they can uphold to when they are at home and elsewhere. In the cafeteria, it was run based on class. The little ones went first as they still had to get their naptime in. The teachers stayed with them to make sure they were eating and drinking as much of their food as possible and not play around while doing so which is important as when that young, they have a very short attention span. They do have someone to watch over the kids. When it became too loud, lights were turned off and all the kids had to stop what they were doing and wait until otherwise. Each class had a leader to take them and their classmates back to class. Kids that haven't been on their best behavior weren't allowed to be leader. This might seem a bit much but I believe it shows how important it can be to be on your best behavior no matter where you go. If not, expect there to be some kind of consequence(s). All the older kids are quite helpful when it came to big events and needing to put things away. They take on orders without question. They all help each other out. It's great to see how obedient they are. I hope they carry it at their own home and other places. The teachers and other staff members are a pleasant to work with. They do what they can to assist volunteers and make us feel welcomed. I didn't know how to act when I first came here, but they welcomed us with open arms and guided us around the school. Food and drink were provided for us to help us get through the long hours and the blistering heat. Hope to work with this school again one day.

The admin was inexperienced, the curriculum was inconsistent, and it honestly felt like grade school daycares with little taught outside of very basic English and math. I cannot discourage military families enough, they honestly hate military families. This is a catholic school in the absolute loosest of term. 10/10 would not recommend sending any child you care about to this school.

For example- keep a sanitizer with you. The auditorium or cafeteria of the school was brightly lit, clean and easy to find. Snacks like bags of cookies and crackers were available to the audience on a back table Governor Ige was able to take a pic with me and I enjoyed the Town Hall mtg experience as I usually don't attend anything political.

I think its nice that the school allows these private school buses to use their parking lot so the children have a safe place to wait before heading off to school. It's great that the school is able to utilize the parking lot early in the morning for a worth while cause without disturbing their daily routine. Could you please move down; this is where we sit?" To which this adult man responded "I will fucking sit where I want! Want me to show you my ID to prove I can sit here?" As my daughter went to put her backpack and bag down, she bumped into the man and told him she was sorry. ANYONE who knows my daughter, knows that she is a sweetheart and wears her heart on her sleeve. THIS GROWN MAN then proceeded to verbally assault and swear at my 16-year-old daughter yelling "You fucking dumb bitch" among other things as my daughter cried hysterically and the other cheerleaders surrounded her to try to shield her from this man. The administration inaction and inability to protect their students from being assaulted is disgraceful.

They successfully integrate 7th graders from seven (I think) complex area elementary schools, then feed the 8th graders into Pearl City High School. With only two years at Highlands, students don't have long to make an indelible mark on teachers, the campus, and the culture of the school. The Principal, Amy Martinson, has been there for nearly 10-years and has a firm understanding of who the teachers are, what their strengths are, and where the opportunities lay. This works for Highlands, but can also work against it in typical long-tenured principal scenarios. Ms. Martinson, however, seems to embrace change, ensuring smartboards for most classrooms, iPads for most teachers, aquaponics gardens, and robotics teams. STEM related emphasis will win me over all the time. The campus is in mostly good condition. I'm confident it's an uphill battle when you're dealing with a bunch of 7th and 8th graders (mostly, the boys) who believe they've got newfound freedoms because the parents aren't on the campus as much as elementary school. This is why you'll find periodic graffitti, trash, dirty bathrooms, and messy bulletin boards. That said, the school makes a pretty honorable attempt at cleaning up after the kids. I don't have the good fortune of knowing most of the teachers, unlike my experience at my kids' elementary school. The teachers I do know/did meet seem to be first class. I'm especially fond of my son's science, math, and English teachers (Ms. Lin, Mr. Yamashita, and Ms. Mumau, respectively). They treat my son with respect, but have high expectations for him and grade him accordingly. That's all I can ask for. If anything, either he really is that smart, or they're not giving him enough homework. Somehow, he's always telling me, 'no homework.' Hmmm, suspicious. When something bad happens on campus, the school has been good about sending letters to parents in a timely manner. There have been a few examples, so I won't bore you with the details. However, my son came home last week and told me there were nine (9) fights at school that day (something about 'National Fight Day'), yet we didn't get anything from the school. That concerns me. The great news is my son tells me he never feels intimidated, or bullied on campus. For the most part, he says he really enjoys attending the school, that's a big relief on my part! Situated up on the hills of Pearl City, on Honolaulea Street, it's got lots of traffic surrounding the campus in the morning drop-off hour (7:00am to 8:00am). After that, it's awesome sauce picking kids up. The PTA leaves much to be desired (even though I'm on the board, I'm not impressed), but the School Community Council has great depth and experience in helping the school. This helps the principal in a big way. All-in-all, I'm happy with Pearl Highlands Middle School (but could be happier)!
