Like everyone else who has reviewed this hotel, we're traveling Route 66 and chose this place because it was a recommended stop. It's quaint; a nice reminder of what life used to be for travelers. The room is clean and quiet and the bed comfortable. The decor, including the microwave and refrigerator, were chosen to provide a retro vibe. I just feel this could have been a lot better, especially for the price of the room. The manager was not here when we arrived at 5:00 pm and was unavailable by phone. It would have been nice to be able to talk to someone because this is kind of a remote area, no cell service and the wifi didn't work, so how could we know what's available around here? There were ants everywhere in the room, though I'm sure that's not normal for this place. The yard was nice (though showing some neglect), but we weren't sure where it was ok to sit and relax because -- again -- the management wasn't available. The ice machine was broken. TL/DR: Potentially nice, but for the money we've stayed in much better historic hotels on our route. read more

Of course it's in a great location for those enjoying Route 66, room was very clean and nicely appointed, cool ambiance and neon signs, plus you have a restaurant next door. Kiss my deposit goodbye. Three weeks ahead of a trip I booked a room on Wagon Wheels site. The form felt more like I was signing up for a Newsletter or putting my name in a raffle for a chance to get my room. After sending in the form I called and paid my deposit on the room over the phone. Little odd needing a deposit but I never booked a hotel this far in advance. They also use Square which I also thought was strange but then again it's a "historic" motel. I got an email confirming my receipt from Square and that was it. A week from my trip I called again to double confirm my reservation and...I was told I didn't have a reservation. I told the lady of course I did - I filled out the form on the site and followed up with the call and paid my deposit. She asked me "Well did you fill out the SECOND form?" So now I'm confused and she's getting more impatient by the second while I got her on speaker phone trying to dig thru their website and find this OTHER form. She told me to fill out the second form and it would be for a different room. I didn't want to go with this because I had my heart set on the suite so I asked if I could get a refund on my deposit. She told me that the deposit was non refundable. So yes, I'm out on a deposit for a room that they have no record of me reserving. My best guess is that its a busy holiday weekend and they overbooked because they still use ink and quills here. If you REALLY want historic you're welcome to try your luck. read more

Then, after reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided if she was that unfriendly and unreachable, we'd take our $$$ elsewhere. Her rudeness lost her a potential customer. read more

We're doing the Route 66 thing, stopping at all of the attractions, sites and traveling down the original road when possible so we were excited to stay at the oldest operating Hotel on Route 66. We were not disappointed. We stayed in room 16, a suite. I'm a top life time elite member of one the large hotel chains and stayed at many independent hotels as well. I've also done some AirBnB as well but I have to say this was the most unique check in and out process I've experienced. We never saw a hotel employee during the one night stay. They are easy to get into contact though, there's a phone # on the office door. It is also easy to make reservations, you go through a third party. To check in you call the # on the front office door and they give you your cabin # and the key will be there as well. The suite we were in had a small bedroom, large bathroom and another small room with another door. The room has a microwave and refrigerator. There is a wooden deck to use when the weather's good and another building that looks like some BBQing happens. There's plenty of free parking and a BBQ restaurant place a couple hundred feet away. I'm writing this review in a high quality hotel and have to say Wagon Wheel's room may be much smaller but the fit and finish is much better showing me the owner has a lot of pride in the hotel. We plan on staying again in August. Highly recommended but don't expect a standard hotel experience. read more

We stayed here to celebrate our anniversary. We love the cozy charm of the cottages on Route 66. We stayed in room 22 which is pretty large and comfortable. The bed was a bit on the firm side but still comfortable. Good water pressure and the temperature of the room was nice. I do have to say, we were originally in room 1. This was very small and wasn't going to work for us so we upgraded. This room would be fine for a single person or if you are just checking in to sleep for the night. The cottages were nicely updated but still had the charm of the building years ago. The glass door knobs, the radiators and the pully slide windows to name a few. When we come to visit again we will definitely stay here. read more

Tourist Trap! I followed link and rooms stated $60 dbl $69 queen. Called and requested one of them, they told me they had a dbl. When we got there they charged us $97 for two ppl, I disputed, the woman basically said too bad (she knew she had me b/c it was late) and no one had ever complained. She told us a dbl was for 2 dbl beds and they had nothing else on a Monday night. We had to park and walk all our things around to the front of the building between the two parked cars between the buildings. There was no rugs, the sink was in the main room, our coffeemaker was on register behind the bathroom door with only one condiment packet. There was virtually no place to set anything sans the one small table next to one of the two double beds. The bathroom had a cheap plastic toilet seat and tiny fiberglass shower. The inside is not at all how the outside appears. I am posting two interior pictures of our overpriced room. $97 for two ppl...outrageous. We stayed at the TeePee Hotel in Holbrook, AZ last year and this place should take a lesson from them. Yes the outside was nice so my advice is to stay elsewhere and stop and take a few pictures. read more

One of the coolest, most retro places we stayed at on our Route 66 cross-country trip. Small, but Beautifully maintained rooms/cottages, that were suprisingly affordable! We really enjoyed the tranquil setting, sitting in the courtyard by the communal fire pit listening to the crickets at night. What was neat about this place was the old gas and service station that they've kept from decades ago when Route 66 was truly "America's Main Street" from Chicago to LA. The old neon "Wagon Wheel Motel" sign out front was a nice touch as well! Highly recommended! We can't wait to return on our next cross-country trip! read more

I recently had the opportunity to stay at this historic Rt66 motel. The owner has done a fantastic job of updating while keeping all the historic charm. I stayed in room 22. Overall the room looks great. Comfortable bed and nice features. Flat screen tv, whirlpool tub. The down side. Small tight bathroom. Some more thought should have gone into the design when remodeling. With the weather we had, it was very humid in our room. The hvac was set to heat and could not be changed. If we could have changed it we could have dried the place out a bit. The worst thing was I felt like I was sharing the room with the people in room 21. The wall between the two rooms really needs sound proofing. You can honestly hear every word they are saying through the wall. Fix that and you would be 4 or 5 star. read more

I loved the Wagon Wheel! Staying in an old Rt. 66 motel has been on my bucket list for quite awhile now. I did a lot of online research about motels along the old "mother road" and chose this one because it had been recently renovated. Connie and crew did an outstanding job bringing back the look and feel of the motel when it was brand new! We were driving back from Texas to our home in Chicago and were running late. The night clerk called us at about 8pm to ask us what time we were supposed to arrive and let us know that she was leaving soon. When I told her that we wouldn't be there until after 10pm, she said "no problem" and left the key under the mat of the room assigned to us. :) Yes, it's a smaller room. Rooms -were- small back in the old days. However, the room was very cozy, comfortable and pristine in cleanliness. The following morning we went for breakfast at the cafe down the street. I got to complete my "Americana" wish. My only suggestion would be to have lots of -good- coffee for the customers at the office/shop in the mornings. Modern day customers are used to having coffee makers in their rooms and I understand there isn't room for them in the rooms, so they should be able to get their morning caffeine fix on-premises. read more

We booked this from the photos of the exterior of the main buildings (very cute vintage stone) and the fact that dogs were allowed. We have a small terrier. We didn't know until checking in that the two units that dogs are allowed in are in the back and are cinder block and totally charmless. We were also really disappointed in the interior. The whole stay was a huge let down and pretty expensive for what you get. Not worth the detour we took to stay there. There was a flat tv in the room but the image was so bad we just watched Netflix on our laptop. The Wifi is so slow that it barely worked. The room did have a mini fridge and a mini microwave that we didn't use and a little coffee maker that was pretty useless. It could be a cute motel but they need to hire someone to help. read more

Overall, this is a great place to stay. The rooms are neat, clean, and well priced. This is a nostalgic location and you are staying in a little piece of history. These type of cottages were designed small to begin with, so don't expect a huge room but the suite we stayed in had more room than I was expecting. The shower was beautiful and new (photo), and welcome after a long drive. The toilet is situated in a weird location (photo) and must have been placed there out of necessity; although it seems that they could have made some more room if they wanted when they did the remodel. The rooms are so small, you can barely walk in them. The shower stall is the size of a coffin and the water sprays in a corner at a shelf in the shower. Not at you. You have to be somewhat of a contortionist to just wash your face, bending weirdly over the shelf. Good luck on the rest of the body. When we drove up, the no vacancy sign was on, but we inquired anyway. It was dark and we were out in the middle of nowhere. We were given our room, and yes, it is cute and clean, but BOY is it small. And they charge so much for it! Three stars. It didn't suck and it wasn't the best. read more

Made reservations here this past weekend. Arrived at 1:30pm went into office no one available. Got my dogs out of vehicle and walked around the grounds. Lady on golf cart came towards me saying something I couldn't hear. When I could she was yelling " get those dogs off the grass". Evidently the area was public place but no sign to say " keep dogs off grass". Hmm easy fix. Told her I had reservations and she rudely informed me check In wasn't until 3:30. Went to cousin's home and he told me the owner is very rude to everyone in town. Went back at 3:30 and she couldn't check me in correctly. She didn't charge me correctly for 2 nights. Charged only $8.80 second night. So she rang up second night and in process of paying messed up my credit card. She didn't even subtract the $8.80 she already charged me. (Didn't realize until after I came home). Unfortunate this lady is the owner. The motel is cute but beds hard as rock. Pillow also very hard. But because of the rudeness of the owner I would not recommend staying here. Family member on Chamber of Commerce for city say she causes problems with them also. Save your money go elsewhere on Route 66. read more

The oldest continuously running motel on Route 66! I've stayed in some pretty swanky places across the country and while I wouldn't say this qualifies as swanky, it's still fantastic! Charming, clean, comfortable room. The office was a gift store too. I purchased a beautiful faux turquoise necklace to remember the weekend. Different sized rooms available. We chose a single queen room. We were handed keys to room 6. The room is small, but has everything you need for an overnight stay. We were comfortable. The AC definitely works...we woke up chilly! Our room had a front and back door and it seems most rooms do. There's an ice machine and a washer and dryer available in a small building on site. Would definitely recommend staying here if you're passing through, floating, or a cute weekend getaway! read more

Charming old Route 66 motel lovingly restored by the current owner! The office where you check in (which shares a space with a cool gift shop) is housed in an old stone service station. The motel rooms are housed in stone cabins - some adjoin each other and some are freestanding. Nice clean bright rooms with fresh white linens. The old doors and windows in the rooms have been restored and are still intact. Between the office building and the cabins is a patio with outdoor seating around a fire pit. Lots of firewood is stacked nearby so the guests can light up the pit in the evenings and enjoy the fire. Shading the patio is a big old tree; hanging from one branch is a big chandelier - what fun! A laundry room and ice machine are available on the property. This was the perfect stopover on our Route 66 journey. read more

An adorable little place with the right balance of modern amenities together with an authentic 66 nostalgia. The new owner has upgraded with thoughtful touches. According to the woman at the front desk, this is the longest continuously-operating motel on Route 66 (I'm not a fact-checker; I took the nice woman at her word). This would be an excellent choice for the Route 66 enthusiast traveling with a hostile travel partner, i.e., someone who says, "We can stop and look at any place you want, but I am NOT staying in one of those dirty, little fleabags motels." The Wagon Wheel is neat as a pin. The bathroom is an example of where the more modest dimensions of the past may hem you in a bit, with a standing shower slightly bigger than a coat closet and a separate wash basin in the bedroom. The shower might be a tight fit for those over 6 feet and/or over 200 pounds, but it's new, clean, with excellent water pressure and truly hot water. The stone cottages have a distinctly "Eastern 66" feel, nestled among trees and a sprawling, well-maintained green lawn, as opposed to the stucco, hiply-desolate desert motels like Tucumcari's excellent Blue Swallow. It's easy to feel you've stepped into a postcard advertising a gently adventurous journey West. I didn't use the on-site laundry facilities, but they are a modern, thoughtful touch at such a small and "genuine" location, another sign the management knows how to blend the modern conveniences travelers need with the retro look that makes this an appealing alternative to, say, a Hampton Inn. I need to ding the Wagon Wheel one star for a small but glaring annoyance: about an hour after I fell asleep, I was awakened by an insistent buzz-buzz-buzzzzzzzzz. It sounded exactly like a smartphone set on vibrate with its alarm going off; in fact, I was sure someone in the next bedroom had left their phone in the room, and it was ringing. I was able to locate the nuisance: the in-wall LG "Neo Plasma" air conditioning and heating unit near the door. After turning it off, I fell back to sleep without a problem. It was a balmy night, so I didn't worry about turning it off, but I wouldn't want to choose between staying warm and staying awake. Light sleepers may want to bring earplugs. Overall, a terrific value worth planning a stop on your trip for. I'll be back. Skip the convenience of the nothing-exceptional "Missouri Hick BBQ" next door unless you're famished and easy to please. read more

Very comfortable room and bed, and a cool A/C unit that kept out the Missouri heat. There's a renowned barbaque place next door, and a diner just down the street for breakfast. We love staying in the older motels, it is a yearly tradition with us. Every year we look for an old Route 66 motel to stay in. We loved this place. We did pick the coldest night of the year and our only issue was that the doors needed a bit more weather stripping. Cold air came in around it and we had to block the cold with our coats. Other than that it was clean, comfortable, the beds were amazing, it was quaint and reminiscent of days gone by. If passing through again, we would definitely stay and would definitely recommend. read more

Soo.. We stayed here from referrals from friends we have made in the area from float trips in Steeleville MO. This hotel is on Route 66 and is very quaint. We loved it originally and the staff that we dealt with on arrival was very nice. Fast forward to after dinner and we got back to our room and had a few more drinks before bed. We fell asleep with the music on, but it wasn't any louder than you would have your TV (we weren't jamming out). We were awoken to a loud slam on our door, and when my husband jumped up to check, there was no one there. A wood piece of the door was on the ground. My husband came back in, and a few minutes later, another knock on the door brought two officers and I'm going to assume, one of the owners. The officers determined that our music wasn't loud and everything was fine. Obviously the owner did not like their opinion. In the morning, we figured we were not welcome and needed to leave ASAP. Every time we tried to take a shower, there was no hot water, and we joked that she probably turned ours off lol. We eventually was able to get showers to leave and get out, but here comes that lady again. She was screaming at the top of her lungs no matter how calmly my husband tried to speak with her. She eventually yelled before walking off, JUST GET OUT! So we started packing faster. It hit 11am and she drove up again while we were packing the car and started screaming again. She had (I assume) her husband with her, and every time I tried to speak to him, she would roll his window up (poor guy) and you could tell she was running the show. When I told her the police agreed with us the night prior, she said she was going to be talking about that with them later. Then she got on the phone and called the police and requested different police from the night prior because she didn't like them not agreeing with her. I would have stayed in order to speak my side of the story again, but it is private property and didn't want to be accused of refusing to leave. So we packed the rest and left, but when we tried she blocked us in. We had to drive around her in the grass, and yes, I flipped her off on the way out. Horrible harpy woman if you ask me. read more

Very disappointing. The outside of the building was spot on. The inside was renovated but in a more modern way that didn't match with the Route 66 theme. Then we literally get locked in our room. We called front desk about 8 times and no answer. Was close to calling fire deptment to get us out. Finally my husband was able to fix the dead bolt and we were set free. We told the front desk following morning and they didn't offer any compensation and they never even checked the voicemails we left so had no idea. This will not be our place to stay next time through. read more

If your floating in the area I definitely recommend you stay here. A piece of History on one of the oldest Motels still standing on historic Route66. Renovated by the new owner Connie and the rooms are great! Ours happen to have the 2 man jacuzzi tub and we are not talking about a cheap jacuzzi tub either like the ones you might find at a chain hotel. This one had plenty of jets, it was quiet and lots of room for a swingers party ;) ...but enough about my weekend. This Ninja really loved what the new owner did to restore this place. The room and the people we met during our stay definitely left a great impression and if ever I am in the area again I definitely plan on staying here at Wagon Wheel Motel. Great job Connie! What a surprising gem! We stayed here with a group of 21 people for a couple of nights on a club trip. We couldn't have asked for a better place! The rooms were very small, but they had comfortable beds and were extremely clean. The shower was tiny, the door handle fell off the bathroom door, and their heating/cooling system was new, but very strange. It was either heat or cooling and in the fall with hot days and cool nights, you really need both. Froze the first night, burned up the second. But otherwise the place was so great, that those 'annoyances' actually added to the charm. The fire pit, which had an ample supply of wood, was a fantastic place for our group to gather in the evening. The owners even joined us the second night. The rooms were all different. It was fun to walk through everyone's room to see what they got. Soooo much better than the chain motels! I would definitely stay here again if in the area! read more

This is another classic Rte 66 motel. I stayed here the first night of my trip to LA. The atmosphere is classic rte 66. The rooms have been romodeled and the room I was in was small but clean. It is not far from the Meramac caverns. Cuba is a town known for its' murals. I would highly recommend this as a trip back to the hay days of old 66. Room rates are reasonable and they are clean.
