Oh, England... you're missing out if this is the interpretation of ramen dishes in this chain, in this country. Perhaps the Canadians are spoiled. I've heard glowing reviews about the dishes, and being a huge ramen fan, I needed to confirm the taste. Maybe they won't listen to me, oh well.
This location is particularly great for IG aesthetics and group hangout vibes. The ambiance is cool and there are many communal tables at the centre of the restaurant. The drinks' menu has beer, wine and cold sake. The noise level is tolerable and the service is great. We had visited at an off-peak time on a Friday night.
My friend and I had ordered ramen dishes: Wagamama and the pork belly. I've also included a hirata/bao bun sandwich (which reminded me of Vancouver's Bao Down and other restaurants) of pork belly, sriracha, and apple. These dishes were on the pricey side because of my shitty exchange rate but I digress, I had to order them. First note on the ramen I got: pork belly slices were plenty and flavourful, healthy amount of pea shoots (not a common topping), cautious pieces of bamboo shoots, (not a ramen) half egg, and fresh wakame. Fresh, wet seaweed...which was not fun to eat. The broth was ok but clearly not boiled fat, and the broth just barely covered the noodles. The noodles were thin egg noodles that were formerly covered in flour. There should be more broth in that bowl as the noodles expand over time, sucking up more broth and therefore having less soup. It is also traditionally served that way so that you could provide a second serving of noodles in that bowl. I found the dish overall not very flavorful or comforting, just noodles and fried pork belly. The wakame has to be turned into dried seaweed so that the salt can add onto the broth's taste. The Wagamama ramen was chicken-based, which distinctly didn't taste like chicken broth that had been boiled for hours. There were grilled chicken breast pieces, three mussels and two prawns, same egg noodles, pea shoots and fresh wakame. I didn't eat this dish but it was missing that heartiness for which ramen is recognized. I had tried the broth. The soup was also on an equal ratio with the noodles.
The hirata buns are their own review. I had previously ordered this numerous times over deliveroo for someone who had thoroughly enjoyed it. My comments for it are: that it needs more sriracha sauce and less mayo, please season the apple (caramelize it?) before frying because it had tasted like a vegetable, and the one leaf coriander is not helpful. More coriander would be great or just take it out entirely. Again, I'm a tourist and maybe this is how these dishes are interpreted in the UK, but the British people need to experience these dishes better. read more
