Gifts from the waiter, a little off putting.

This location has been a pretty alright spot for a quick bite before or after classes but today my friend and I sat down for lunch, and I'm not exactly closeted so I'm used to getting looks around here. But we were having a really good time the food was as you'd expect just what you want at Waffle House, pretty good, and our server (whoever the only male server was at 4 pm on Thursday February 25 2021) treated us to a little card magic trick with some disappearing dots- it was cute and funny and harmless. He gave us the card and a faux business card, which I was um put off to realize we're just fronts for resources that would save my immortal soul :) so anyways we finish and promptly leave and by the drivers side of our car there's another card that asks where we think we'll go if we die tonight (have we been saved). It was a real damper.

Good food, decent service (trainee), good folks. They even had impromptu, live music.

A charming little…read morecafé that looked like it had big dreams and about 85% of the throw pillows to prove it. We grabbed seats at the bar--prime real estate for both people-watching and silent negotiations with the universe about how long coffee should take to arrive. The menu got a thorough inspection while we waited. And waited. Not a hostile wait. More like... a polite standoff between us and the concept of service. Eventually, victory. Orders placed. I went all in: biscuits and sausage gravy, eggs over easy, maple bacon--the kind of breakfast that doesn't whisper "good morning," it kicks the door in and demands respect. My son went classic with French toast and sausage, a choice that says, "I trust the fundamentals." Now, let's talk ambiance. Coffee in paper cups. Not a dealbreaker, but it does send a subtle message: "We're still figuring some things out." The interior felt like a Pinterest board mid-argument--close, but not quite ready for the reveal episode. Service? Nice. Professional. Also slightly resembling a live-action game of pinball. Our waitress was great, but the overall flow had a certain freestyle jazz quality--improvised, energetic, and occasionally confusing. Refills were more of a "self-reflection exercise" than an offered service, so ordering extra water was a tactical masterstroke. But then... the food arrived. And just like that, all sins were forgiven. That biscuit and sausage gravy? Absolute bullseye. The kind of dish that makes you pause mid-bite and question whether your childhood memories have been quietly outperformed. It didn't just taste homemade--it tasted like someone's mom was in the back, judging everyone and getting it right. The French toast held its own--golden, solid, no nonsense. Exactly what it needed to be. So here's the deal: the service may have been running a little behind the breakfast parade, but the food? Leading the band, confetti cannon and all. Final verdict: 4 stars. Not because it couldn't be 5--but because it's this close. Tighten up the service, ditch the paper cups, finish decorating like you mean it, and you've got a heavyweight contender. Until then, it remains a gem--slightly unpolished, but absolutely worth the stop.

But as the saying goes: never judge a book by its cover. We were absolutely blown away by the experience. Despite the modest exterior, the food is nothing short of world-class. I ordered the ribeye, and it was cooked to absolute perfection--tender, flavorful, and easily one of the best steaks I've had in a long time. Since we were a large group, we ended up ordering a significant portion of the menu. Between us, we tried the fish, shrimp, and various pasta plates. It felt like we sampled almost everything they offer, and every single dish was an absolute hit. It's rare to find a place where the entire table is equally impressed with their meal, but Basil & Baxter's pulled it off effortlessly. Beyond the incredible kitchen, the service was outstanding. The staff was attentive, welcoming, and handled our group with the kind of professionalism that makes a night out feel special. If you're in Niceville, do not pass this place up. It might look humble from the street, but the flavors and hospitality inside are massive. We will definitely be back!

They are always busy with tables and to go orders. There must of been new bartender. My husband and I had ordered the mock Butterfly and Lemonade drink we had previously and enjoyed. The first time we had it, it came out in a regular tall water glass. This time it came in a martini glass and the first sip was....OMG strong with liquor. We sent them back to get the nonalcoholic drinks and they came back in a whisky glass, not the taller water glass. Not sure if this was a mistake or they really raised their prices. The lemonade drink with a little color added to it is $7! But, the food is always delicious. My husband had the pot pie and it was the size of a regular 12 inch pie! I had the pork chop which was thick and tender. Some in our party love the bisque soup and order a bowl, which is huge. The cup size was more what we expect as a bowl size. The shrimp and grits is phenomenal too, which I have personally tried. Service is great and friendly. You are given a basket of delicious crusty warm buns comped but if you ask for more (which we did) note that they are .50 cents each. We will continue to visit this restaurant each winter while we are here.

I'd heard great things about this spot being a local go-to several years ago, so I was looking forward to a solid meal with our large group. Unfortunately, the experience just didn't live up to the reputation. It was exceptionally quiet--perhaps because it's the off-season--but even with the lack of a crowd, the food and service were underwhelming across the board. A lot of us ordered the burgers, and they were just "okay" at best. I went for the one topped with pulled pork, thinking it would be a highlight, but it really didn't work. The flavors didn't mesh, and it was a structural mess--the whole thing just broke apart and became a struggle to eat. Across our entire large group, I don't think anyone was super impressed with their meal. The service didn't help matters, either. We ordered several cocktails, and they were consistently either late or just plain wrong. Since it wasn't a very busy night, there wasn't really a clear reason for the lapse in attention. It's a shame because the setting is beautiful, but between the hit-or-miss drinks and the lackluster food, the whole night felt like it missed the mark.

The unsweetened iced tea tasted delicious once the pink stuff was added, and that's only saying something because you wouldn't believe how often the iced tea stinks in restaurants. They had next to nothing for vegetarians, since they seem to enjoy putting bacon in everything. Why? They kindly swapped the Swiss cheese (blech) in the kasespatzle for Alfredo sauce, and I got a cute salad plate too. It tasted fine, I had no complaints. I would like to point out that, according to the interwebs, "In 2022, about 8.12 million people in Germany identified as either vegetarians or largely forgo meat consumption."
