I first walked into the West Wind Schools Alameda Dojo because it was conveniently located smack dab in the middle of the Park Street Shopping District (5 bus lines get here, there's a parking garage right down the street, it's a comfortable riding distance from anywhere in Alameda, I walk here...). After about a year, I have come to think of West Wind as the center of town where local people of all ages and walks of life can come to learn martial arts, stay in great shape, and be a part of something bigger than themselves. My experience here so far has been great.... The instructors are profoundly well-educated, enthusiastic, and dedicated to their students' development. Seriously, the people who run this place are just so awesome (hard to put into words, but I'm getting a little choked up here actually - I know that's sappy but it's totally true!). Being a student at West Wind Schools is like having a family of super-heroes! Gushy stuff aside - I really can't believe I lived in the Bay Area for so long without any self-defense training. Child or adult, man or woman - if you live in the Bay Area, you need to know basic self-defense. I don't know about the other locations, but the Alameda dojo has a super flexible schedule that enables anyone to get discounted introductory classes, so call and talk to them right now! DO it! I have a deep sense of gratitude for West Wind Schools Alameda. I hope they stay right there forever and keep doing exactly what they're doing. Go A-TEAM!

This has turned out to be a great option for me, even having no prior experience with martial arts. It is an excellent workout *and* a lot of fun. Since I started training over a year ago, I have lost weight, gained strength and flexibility, and learned valuable self defense skills. It is fun interacting with classmates, unlike at the typical group gym class where you attend side by side with a bunch of others but never really get to work together. The group here is really friendly and supportive - a great community feel. The course is also a challenge for the mind: I've had to memorize many techniques such as joint locks, strikes, throws, kicks, falls, and "forms" (a series of techniques). With such rich, varied training content, Instructor Moore is a very good teacher - patient, clear, challenging and encouraging.

Unfortunately I couldn't continue with the regular beginner classes due to work conflicts, but I am so appreciative of how accommodating EMA was for my personal needs. I recommend trying the free trial class if you are interested. The class sizes are small with a lot of individual attention. As a complete newbie, I was especially impressed with how more advanced students were willing to kindly help me out without me having to ask. It was a very welcoming and patient community, which was so encouraging. The class sessions are diverse in terms of lessons to keep things interesting. My worry was being too far behind everyone else in terms of skills, but there were several other beginners as well and it was fun to learn together and everything could be scaled to my level. Note: You will need to purchase or bring a karategi(?) as well as special patches, but the dojo has both (and some loaner ones as well). Pricing was pretty affordable for classes 2x a week and was billed monthly for my plan (discounted for linking your bank). Parking is limited in the main lot but I never had problems with street parking on the side streets.

Expectations of the kids and older students are very high, and comes from a place of love and integrity. And while the physical expectations of training are there, the expectations don't end at the walls of the school. The instructors regularly talk with the kids about balance in their lives - encouraging them in school, supporting family, and pushing students to critically evaluate their relationship with devices and social media. It never comes off as preachy, because the instructors have earned the respect of their students. You will have fun, you will find a family, at times you will be sore and frustrated...but you will feel like you are doing something great for your mind and body. Students range from age three to fifty. Whoever you are (and whatever shape you are in) you will be accepted here and encouraged to be your best. But you have to experience it to truly understand.

Belts are not given out because you've been here a long time and pay your tuition. There is integrity involved, and you have to earn each rank, regardless of your age. I came to Frohm's Martial Arts with my daughter who began almost a year before me and I was impressed. Impressed by Head Teacher Mr. Frohm, the Blackbelts, and most important the students. Like I say for any school... Look at the students the school produces, look at the environment and see how the students are treated. My daughter gained confidence, she received positive feedback for the things she was doing well, and they worked on the things that needed work. The school's motto is: **Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-Control, Indomitable Spirit** ...and you can tell that it's not just empty words. I am a 38 year old woman, not the first person you think of when you think of martial arts; but I am a martial artist!! My karate birthday (when I began) is 12/04/07. My daughter brought me to karate, but the school kept me here. This is my second family! Everybody is very respectful to each other and will make newcomers feel comfortable as well. I can't say enough about Head Teacher Mr. Frohm. A good program starts with a good instructor. He is kind, humble and an amazing instructor! He knows how to push you to be a better person physically and mentally. Our students, Black belts and lower belts, fight and do forms/katas in tournaments, and they not only do well, but they show respect, integrity and self-control on and off the mat. Check out FMA or Frohm's martial arts on Youtube for a preview! ***Remember: it is ALWAYS advisable to AVOID a street fight at any cost! No matter how good you are at your art/sport, ANY crazy person can just grab a gun and shoot you. Then that's it - end of story ****

Believe me, there is no cure for a tough day at work like beating the crap out of a bag. (Or, at least, trying to.) Truly. Another thing I like is that Doug just doesn't teach the same routines again and again, he changes it up week to week and goes around checking each student for technique - and effort. :) Classes are mostly female, but men work out with us, too. Not a problem either way - sooner or later all the genders are sweating equally. You can buy a book of ten classes for $75; $7.50 a class! (That's the great deal I was talking about.) And then, after I became a regular, there was the plus of Doug and classmates always being glad I showed up. For me, that's an added inspiration to work out. **Addendum**: I started taking the wun hop kuen do classes here in November 2007, and I have to say it's totally transformed me. Not only am I in better shape, but I come away from each class learning something new about myself. Enlightened, even. No, seriously - even if in a small way. Sifu Doug Jones has a stellar background, and is amazing and incredibly motivating. Sihing Damond brilliantly balances technique and practical application. Our other instructors--Sihing Sinclair, Sisuk Teresa, Sisuk Tray, and more--are all extremely knowledgeable and helpful. He's an awesome, inspiring, encouraging and attentive trainer. The great thing is that he always meets people at whatever level they are at, and brings them to the next level. I have to respond to "The O" who gave a 1-star review based on the "sketchy" neighborhood, but who has never attended an actual class at this place. Umm?
