Taekwondo has been my life since I was 6. It was the one extracurricular I actually enjoyed as it provided life lessons through fun activities as facades for physical exercise. Our daughter has been doing Tiny Tigers for 6 months and we love it. The instructors are so kind, there's a lot of flexibility in the schedule, and we love how their belt progression process also encourages responsibilities at home. They also offer some really nice community events like Parents Night Out and a very cute Halloween event. Our 7-year-old daughter has been with Master Han for the past 8 months and she's loved it. The classes are active and have a great balance of fun and more serious (age-appropriate), disciplined training. During COVID they have offered virtual classes every day and have now opened up for a few live classes a week with appropriate precautions while continuing virtual classes as well. Master Han and his teachers challenge the kids to work hard and improve themselves while also teaching them to respect others and build their self-discipline. We like the holistic approach. We have been a part of the Hans Martial Arts family since our son was 6 years old (he is now 13 years old). Master Han and the other Masters are terrific. We did our research before starting martial arts for our kids and heard amazing things about Han Martial Arts. It was close to our house, has a small family business feel, with many class times to choose from. So we decided to try it out and found that they really live up to their reputation! My 9yo twins have been going to Master Han's studio since they were 5. Master Han and his team of instructors are warm and encouraging, and adept at finding the right balance between instruction, discipline, and fun for kids at each age. They are extremely gracious and accommodating. UPDATE: Master Han started offering online classes right after the COVID-19 shelter-in-place began. Over the next few weeks they figured out how to make the experience better for the kids. More recently they've started offering small in-person classes and private lessons in the studio, in compliance with current CA guidelines, and they plan to offer classes in Montclair park when permitted. My little 4 1/2 year old daughter started her lessons with Master Han and he is fabulous with kids. My daughter was scared to go to the class but he has a way of keeping the kids interested, disciplined, motivated and most of all learning while having a lot of fun. My daughter went to an individual class, then her and I went to family class together to get her acclimated, and then she took the group "little tiger" class. The other black belt instructor and students were very nice and made me and my daughter feel very welcome. The group class was very fun for me and my daughter. My daughter was beaming when Master Han during stretching asked her to show everyone how to touch her head to her knee and mat during stretching and praised for being the most flexible. It gave her a lot of confidence. She was having so much fun in the family class that she wanted to stay for the little tigers class. Master Han was very gentle, patient and playful with the kids but kept them focused, disciplined, and learning. I hope that my daughter keeps taking the lessons. There is something magical about sparring with an olympic level judoka and realizing that no matter what you do, they will predict your movements before you yourself are even aware of them, and they are in complete control of the situation. There is this undeniably certainty that you are about to be flipped onto your back within a couple seconds. I've only had this sense of being "completely dominated" in Judo sparring with about three people in my life, and Master Han was one of them. Master Han is awesome. Not only is he an olympic level Judo competitor, he is also extremely charming and humorous. Despite the language barrier and Korean accent, you always find yourself laughing with him rather than at him. I literally cannot imagine anyone not liking him after being around him a while. And the best part -- you're not enrolling your kid in some bull**** kiddy "karate" or aikido or useless half-assed self-defense that were really popular in the 90's ... you get to learn things that actually work -- like JUDO! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOV3qVIEFng don't let that video scare you; I'm sure the kids do not train like that; I just wanted to show you that Judo is legitimate and proven to, you know, actually work in a real situation! Master Han is one of the most affable instructors I have ever met. This school purports the idea that there is not such thing as "no" and "can't." His program is a great opportunity to introduce children to fitness, self-discipline, respect, and self-confidence in one little package! Both of my children have been attending Han Martial Arts for over 2 years and the program is amazing! The instruction begins by layering a strong foundation of TKD while having fun. The fun never stops as the training becomes more dynamic and the masters and their enthusiasm carry the students to success. In addition to mastering skills, students are also taught respect, safety and cooperation. The extra bonus is that the program extends itself beyond the dojo, and into the students homes where they are expected to carry the same respect and courtesy with their family and friends. I'm not sure how much skill or talent there is the kids scream at the top of their lungs and are outrageously loud compared to any other martial arts studio even where there are many more kids. It makes me think it is mostly about the screaming and not skill. read more

This place is amazing. My 5 year old son is has done a 2 weeks trial. He is not very athletic. But he loves going to Han Martial Arts. The teachers here are really fun, patient, gentle and very educational. He is so excited every time. I love watching him with the other kids and how they interact and have fun. If I could give Han Martial Arts six stars, I would. Master Han and the other masters are so good with the kids, and there is a focus on building their confidence and improving their behavior. They have also been great about adjusting their program to meet COVID safety guidelines, and they offer both in-person and Zoom classes. I have personally had an amazing experience with the teen/adult program. There are lots of opportunities for older students like me (I'm eighteen) to have leadership roles at the dojang, as instructors, on the poomsae team, etc. I have learned not only taekwondo but also how to teach taekwondo and work with kids, which has been incredible valuable for me. The Masters are also very accommodating and can personalize your training if needed. For example, after I missed my second degree black belt test due to an injury, Master Han gave me an individual belt test once I was healed. Han Martial Arts has been a second home to me for the past eight years. I would highly recommend it for all ages and fitness levels. read more

How to say this delicately? My kids attended a different dojo for nearly 2 years and always had fun, but never really learned anything other than how far they could push the sensei before they would get in trouble. With Master Han, however, after the 2nd lesson, they came home asking me to look online so they could learn how to count in Korean and my older son is practicing his steps and sequences freqently (and without direction from me) so he can advance in his belts. Additionally, since Master Han focuses on positive reinforcement instead of discipline, my kids spend the class trying to be as good as they can be (and are therefore learning a ton). I always try to get some work done during the class, but every time end up totally engrossed in watching the class and laughing with delight at Master Han's good natured teaching and my children's reactions. I could not be happier there. Here's what my kids have to say: I think it's really good martial arts place because they don't really yell at us that much and it makes me feel really comfortable that they don't yell at me. I don't get headaches, because they don't yell at me. I've also learned a lot there - like how to count in Korean. It's a really good place beacause there are a lot of really nice kids and Master Han is a really nice teacher. - 7 year old I LOVE Master Han's place because he doesn't make us do pushups. My children have been going to Han Martial Arts for the last 3 years and plan to continue on until they reach black belt status. Master Han and Master Baek are wonderful coaches. They follow a mix of the best of Korean and U.S. youth coaching pedagogy. They are positive, highly skilled and motivating. My kids love this dojang and feel like its a real community. Master Han has done so much to help his students to feel that sense of community through the charity work that students have the opportunity to participate in, through the annual Christmas party which includes a talent show for kids to showcase their NON martial arts talents, an annual ANTI- Bullying teaching sessions, and the daily positive interactions they have with the Masters. The Masters encourage students to lead exercises, they celebrate daily successes, they use a positive discipline approach to kids' challenges. Students are trained on how to assist lower belt students in their endeavors which helps higher belt students develop as mentors and leaders. There is absolutely no shaming, only encouragement and refocus.There is a real sense of warmth and generosity that is felt at this dojang. Master Han and Master Baek put their hearts and souls into coaching and training. Both Master Baek and Master Han are decorated and accomplished athletes. One additional thing, Master Han has always been focused on giving back to the the community. He has for years, provided Taekwondo lessons for free to under served youths as well as sponsoring a local Oakland school in their fundraising efforts. Go and watch your child in class; you'll learn as much about teaching as you'll learn anywhere. Master Han may have been on the Korean Nat'l team and have gone to the Olympics, but the most important thing he is, is a fabulous teacher. He might wait an entire class to find one thing a kid does right, and then he magnifies it and gets the kid proud of himself. No kids have any discipline problems in this place, and it's all done through encouragement, not anger or fear. Each instructor is as good as the other; and Master Han and another were both on the Korean Nat'l teams; and then a third was the world champion in his weight class. And none of them--NONE of them--are arrogant or dominant or anything but kind and encouraging. Our son is busy, and doesn't always listen as well as he might (he's four)--Master Han and his team guide him lovingly and consistently, and it's just such a valuable element in his upbringing. I'm not a martial artist, never have been, and I'm not particularly focused on my son being some super-duper tae kwon do practitioner; but I think the process is totally invaluable. As you can see, I can't say enough about this place. Just a gem, and to think it's here in Montclair...if you have the opportunity to try it out, do it. You won't regret it. read more

Wonderfully inviting and inclusive atmosphere at Han's Dojo. I attended a intro Judo Class and have now been hooked for almost two years . Every class challenges, I love the fitness emphasis which is so different from any activity ive done before. Incredible 1:1 instruction by attentive, knowledgeable and patient Sensi Wi. Enjoy also learning about the Judo culture and attending with motivated class mates with positive energy overall.. Class count size is small and no detail escapes attention. At times it feels competitive but its always friendly and all about learning to find your own path. I attended a birthday party held for my 6 year old granddaughter at Han Martial Arts. It was amazing and fun to watch all the Master's entertain, teach and play with a dozen 6 year olds, (and one 3 year old). At the end of the two hour party, all children had "broken a board" with their kick; learned to bow as a show of respect; learned a new way to sing Happy Birthday and in general a bit about discipline while having a fabulous time. I wrote a review in the past geared more towards the kids program (both of my children attend weekly). I mentioned that I was starting the adult program as well. I absolutely love it and am working hard towards black belt. 1.5 years later, tae kwon do is such a big part of my life. The Han family are part of our family. They are simply the best.
