And for anyone making excuses I'm a mom of two, a wife, and I work full time. If I can carve out time to train Jiu-Jitsu and fall completely in love with it, anyone can. I should also mention I am almost 35 weeks pregnant so she helped guided me while others did the standard poses. It was challenging but in a good way. To begin this place has a striking training once a week. I watched in amazement as people punched a punching bag full of recycled rubber tires and sand. It reminded me of a funny cartoon seeing the energy wave transfer back on the striker. I saw attempts at kickboxing by instructors that obviously had no Muay Thai or Kickboxing experience. Now onto the reason why I came to this place, the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The BJJ training did not meet my expectations of a professional BJJ training academy. The business owner seemed distracted by his cell phone or negativity most of the time. The were small but there seemed to be a high count of injuries, including the owner who may not spar, due to having had his arm broken doing BJJ. Good, lively and intelligent students were routinely knocked down a peg, or brow beat, so to speak, when they were doing well. This seemed to serve no efficient purpose as these were not belligerent or lazy students. It seems counterproductive. this is not a tough love, it's like Pinnochio being trained by the going nowhere boys. There seemed to be an air of insecurity in the owner and staff. The women that courageously came to the place once, probably never came back for a reason. Most people that attend BJJ classes are not broken people and do not want or need that. We want proper professional training which is a fair trade for payments. So in my opinion go find a dojo that meets your expectations. In the martial arts world there are always people looking for a place to belong, a home, a club and those people could be professional trained, not neglected of professional training. This type of training in the short term wastes time. In the long term it will crutch or starve growth. It may not be healthy for youth or adults. Not for me, and maybe not for you. Also an improvement is the adult swim lane. previously there was only adult swim 15 minutes every two hours so that was difficult! Now there is always one lane which I really appreciate! Lifeguards are great, and i'm glad that they tell kids not to run. Kiddie pool was not functional this year due to a leak, and because it needs to be overhauled/rebuilt, it's unclear if it'll be available next year. I think most members love having this pool to go to during the season.

Pacifica's Secret Waterfall

For an impressive waterfall it's pretty mid. But the area around has some trails with nice views of…read morethe ocean and beyond. Yelpers have mentioned the trail to the waterfall starts where Westline Dr. and Skyline Dr. meet. From here it's fairly intuitive on where to go. I felt the trail down to the falls seemed too steep to attempt so I opted out. I'm not sure if it was better a few years ago but when I went it felt dangerous and easy to lose footing. I wouldn't recommend this part for someone hiking alone, with kids, or with inexperienced hikers. The trail continues in the other direction along Westline Avenue with views of the ocean. If you continue you can see the top of the waterfall from here. You have to walk a little off the main trail in the ice plant but it's worth it if you want to see the falls. Another way is you can see this waterfall is by walking from Esplanade Beach. From the top of the stairs there the waterfall is about .6 miles. It's so much easier to get to this way and it's a nice beach walk. From here you can't see the waterfall as clear because there is a lot of debris in the way. In this sense it's almost a better view from above. The waterfall comes out of a storm drain which isn't as nice and only flows after a big rain. I wouldn't come out of my way to see this waterfall. But I think it's worth coming to see if you are already at Esplanade Beach or live in the neighborhood and are walking the trail alongside Westline Dr. From the start point to the beach and back it's about a 3.4 mile hike.

Evolve Training Center has been an incredible place for my 8-year-old daughter for over two years now. She started training in Muay Thai and now Jiu Jitsu too. The Muay Thai program, led by Coach Mark, is exceptional. Coach Mark is not only knowledgeable and highly skilled, but also deeply dedicated to his students. He takes the time to teach proper techniques and is very patient with his students. He's incredibly supportive of my daughter's potential, which motivates her to keep improving. As parents, we've developed a deep sense of trust, loyalty and appreciation for Coach Mark because of his dedication and the genuine care he shows for his students. The Jiu Jitsu program is equally outstanding, and the coaches are just as amazing. Coach J, Coach Steve, Coach Mikey, and Coach Alex all provide exceptional guidance, pushing students to level up their skills with patience and expertise. Evolve offer ONLINE CLASSES via ZOOM which has been my saving grace during sheltering in place. Training has allowed me to keep my sanity.I don't have an excuse not to train because if I miss a class they provide class recordings. I just finished committing myself to their 4-week Kettlebell Program taught by Coach J. Before the program, my lower back was weak, hamstrings were tight and I was battling a shoulder injury that I have suffered for years. My shoulder was always in pain or frozen and I could barely lift it from carrying my toddler son around. When he was a baby, I pulled my back one day while trying to carry him and almost dropped him. I promised myself that I would always fight to build strength so that wouldn't happen again. I wasn't sure how my body would respond to the Kettlebell training and was scared. I just trusted the process and made a commitment that I would show up and try my best. When I was in class and struggling, i pushed passed my mental roadblocks and took comfort in knowing I wasn't alone because I had my teammates (over 16 people) there with me. I can't begin to tell you how empowering it feels that after 4 weeks I am so much more stronger mentally and physically . For all the mom's out there- I think that after having a baby , the thought crossed my mind that my body will never be what it was; not as strong and that I'm going to be carrying this baby weight forever. I'm not very fond of most gyms/training centers. Evolve Training Center is not like most gyms. Here are the 2 reasons why: 1. In most gyms, the training isn't real life related. Half the classes taught at most gyms you wouldn't be able to incorporate in the rest of the 23 hours of your day. Not at Evolve Training Center! It seems that each coach (John Janero and Mark Tabuso) spend the time to analyze our most basic and common movements and weave it into every aspect of their training. From jiu jitsu, muay thai, fitness class and more importantly the 1 on 1 sessions; they incorporate real life movements and training so that when you leave you are empowered. 2. The atmosphere to impress overwhelms the atmosphere to be better. Most gyms feel unwelcoming or as if you are suppose to do 2 more reps and yell out loud so everyone can hear your roar. Not at Evolve Training Center! It's family based focused on building a community around health. You feel supported and encouraged. And not just by the staff but by the community that attends the gym. One of the biggest challenges in gyms is being in a safe and supported environment so you can push beyond your limitations. This is the place. After taking some time away, my family and I rejoined Evolve in January 2026, and it reminded us exactly why we loved it here in the first place. Since coming back, we've made so much progress in our fitness, boxing skills, technique, and stamina. We've lost weight, stayed consistent, and continue to challenge ourselves every week. We have the Fitness Membership, so we mainly take Boxing for Fitness and FitCamp, and every class leaves us feeling stronger and more motivated than the last. Our child has been training at this jiu jitsu center for some time now, and we have been extremely impressed with the experience. The instructors are knowledgeable, patient, and excellent at working with kids of varying ages and skill levels. They strike a great balance between discipline, encouragement, and fun, which keeps the kids engaged and motivated. The environment feels safe, structured, and welcoming. I joined Evolve Training Center in July 2022, and it's been a game-changer. The positive and welcoming atmosphere makes it feel like a second family. To be honest, I was a bit intimidated about trying something brand new. However, from the first class, I felt welcomed and encouraged. I tried Evolve Training Center for their boxing classes and really appreciated the two-week unlimited trial -- it was a great deal. The instructors and atmosphere were fantastic, and I truly enjoyed my time there. Unfortunately, I couldn't continue because I have an on-call job, and their class times usually conflict with my work. I asked if they could offer a flexible package where I could buy a set number of classes to use anytime, but they said they couldn't. I completely respect their policy, but I was a little disappointed they couldn't accommodate my situation. Their monthly membership is a bit pricey, and with my unpredictable schedule, I could end up paying over $200 and only attending a couple of classes -- not really feasible for me. I'm giving 4 stars because the experience itself was great -- I just wish there were more flexible options for people with irregular schedules. read more

I've been training at Evolve for about a year and a half, and I can't say enough good things about this gym. The coaches, teammates, and overall community are incredible--super supportive, knowledgeable, and always pushing you to improve. This dojo has been a game-changer for our family! Our daughter has grown so much since starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu here--she's more confident, resilient, and learning real self-defense skills. We tried the two-week trial at Evolve Training Center and had such a great experience that we ended up signing up for the year. From the start, the gym was incredibly welcoming and helpful. They allowed us to borrow uniforms while we waited for our own to arrive, which made the transition seamless and stress-free. We originally planned to join just one discipline, but after spending time with the coaches and training alongside the other students, we enjoyed it so much that we decided to enroll in both Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai. The coaching staff is supportive, patient, and clearly invested in their students, and the overall environment is positive and encouraging. Great gym, great classes, great instructors and great atmosphere, are what you will find at Evolve Training Center. I take the boxing for fitness class at Evolve with Coach Mark Tabuso. I had never taken a boxing class like this before, so I was unsure of how much I would enjoy it. After one class I was hooked. I now go 3-4 times a week. The coolest thing about the way mark teaches his classes is that it's different every time you go. It's not the same routine over and over and over. He keeps you challenged, engaged and sweating your butt off, whatever your ability level is. This gym has a family atmosphere, with no attitudes or egos. We love Evolve Training Center! Our experience with the Muay Thai program under Coach Mark has been nothing short of amazing. Both of my sons are attending classes at Evolve Training. My 4 year old attends the bulleyproof class and all of the instructors are great! They are very patient and spend time with each of the kids one on one. My 7 year old just started training in jujitsu and he loves it! The instructors are also great with their demonstrations and techniques. J Janero is also my personal trainer. He is a great motivator and I really don't mind working out, he makes the time go by fast! I have also tried the boxing class with Mark Tabuso, and he is a great instructor too! The best part is I can workout while my boys are working out so I do miss out on spending any time with them. I would recommend this facility to anyone from beginner to advanced! read more

If you have been thinking about going to Evolve, my only advice for you is: DO IT! I have been going there for the past six months for jiu jitsu and personal training with Jay. The first time I went there I was blown away by how much it seemed like the trainers really care about you and want to help. They have a huge range of classes at a lot of different times, so they can fit any schedule, and I have seen a whole range of people there from little kids to professional fighters and everything in between. Hey it is an hour and a half BART ride EACH WAY for me to get there, and I still get out there twice a week - so you can do it too!! read more

I began training at Evolve Training Center with Coach J. and Coach Mark in October. Within 6 months I lost 70lbs and still working hard. Their functional fitness and boxing classes are awesome and I am in the best shape I have ever been in my adult life! It has enabled me to do every day simple things that I have not been able to do previously because of my poor fitness. The amount of support that I have received from both J. and Mark has been off the charts and just the encouragement from everyone at Evolve is touching. It truly is a family. ETC is a one stop shop for all your health and fitness goals for you and your family. Not only does it provide a safe family environment, it provides top instructors and classes that meet your level. From fitness classes, to jiu jitsu classes, muay thai classes, the gym also offers kids classes. The great thing is that you can drop off the kids to their class, while you take your class. Great way to kill 2 birds with one stone. :) I've developed many great friendships training at ETC. It's like my second family. It's the place I go to ground myself from a long day. I've been attend the kids classes for kickboxing and bully proof class for 4 months now and it is a lot of fun! I can't wait for my mom to drive me to class throughout the week. Coach Tabuso and Lexi have taught me how to jab-right-hook, teep kick, right kick, and a lot more. Coach Leland teaches bully proof class and is teaching me how to mount, knee on belly, thunder slap, and more. They are great coaches and I like learning from them. read more

He's still learning the discipline part as his maturity catches up. He's almost 7.5 but always wants to goof off with other students and even the instructors. But they and Ma'm are patient and yet firm in reminding the rules. Surprised to see how little yelp reviews but a lot of the parents may not be regular yelpers. Come swing by and watch for yourself how awesome this place is if you're looking for a martial arts club. It's standing room only on days the kids are being tested for their next belt up. I'll start with the truth: Zhong Luo's Dragon House MMA is a legitimate operation. Luo has undeniable credentials in traditional Chinese kung fu, runs a full-scale MMA program, and promotes his own successful fight events (Zhong Luo Cage Fighting Series) that draw serious talent. The gym produces competitive fighters, hosts high-level amateur and pro bouts, and clearly knows how to develop athletes who go on to bigger stages. No question. On paper, this place has credibility and results. But legitimacy doesn't excuse treating a sincere student like absolute shit. And that's exactly what happened to me in 2019. As someone with a profound admiration for Chinese culture and its martial traditions, I train religiously, pushing my physique to exceptional levels of strength. Raw power, disciplined conditioning, unyielding drive. I sought out Dragon House specifically for its authentic Kung Fu roots blended with modern MMA. Under proper guidance, channeling that energy and refining my skills, I could have become a devastating force in that realm; the kind of dedicated fighter any coach would be proud to mold. Instead, I got blatant disrespect and neglect. Luo repeatedly no-showed for scheduled classes; not once, but multiple times. I'd arrive eager to train, only to wait in vain while unsupervised students sparred chaotically around me. Safety was a joke. On my first day alone, one person attempted to eye gouge me during sparring. There was no oversight and no correction, only serious health and safety risks because the so called "Sifu" failed to honor his commitments, and because of racism (the person I was paired with was a racist white man, a grown adult who tried to eye gouge me, a college student). Even if those no-shows were some colossal "misunderstanding" (which I highly doubt), Luo offered zero explanation and zero apology on both occasions. Not a word. Just silence and indifference toward a student who showed up with nothing but respect and hunger to learn. Then came the real kicker: this "legit" gym still billed me whereabouts $1,700 for a full fucking year of training that I never received. When I disputed and blocked the unauthorized charge through my bank (because paying for phantom services is insane) they sent it straight to collections. Harassing me over money for services that were never provided. Unbelievable predatory bullshit from a place that claims to uphold discipline and honor. I'm not denying the gym's successes or Luo's skills. Plenty of people thrive there. But my experience exposes the rotten underbelly: chronic flakiness at the top, zero accountability, and ruthless billing tactics that screw over anyone who falls through the cracks. This isn't bitterness; it's outrage at being dismissed and exploited despite my sincerity. Dragon House has potential and pedigree, which makes the unprofessionalism even more shameful. Strong warning: sign anything here at your own risk. Demand clear terms, track attendance meticulously, and be prepared for zero recourse if things go south. There are other legit gyms out there worth considering instead. As my dear friends in China would say, "可惜你".
