The shelves seem busier and some of the Christmas gift ideas are really good. Who wouldn't enjoy a radio-controlled rat, or mini walkie-talkies with a 5km range? Small Christmas trees made of plastic circuit board catch my eye: you have to build them up yourself and feature LEDs for lights. Being a bit of an electronics geek I always find Maplin to be a good browse, though they are sometimes overpriced. But all the sale shelves in the Putney branch quickly put my mind at ease. A nice and inexpensive gift for a music lover is a box of blank CD-Rs that look like little records. There's also always something for mom, dad, little brother or sister. Maplin Putney always has knowledgeable staff on hand to field more technical questions too.

Great for torches, batteries, cleaning materials, plastic bowls, cooling fans and fan heaters - you name it. They have a fairly constant range of special offers, some of which offer very good value. Unfortunately, the wide range is the undoing of the small store in Earl's Court. The range is too wide, and therefore lacks depth, to really offer much choice. Sometimes they have what I want, but more often I make the trip instead to their larger store in High Street Kensington. That said, it has been useful for the odd emergency item and the staff have always been very friendly and helpful.

Staff are normally rude and never know what the hell they are talking about. We bought a laptop that had a faulty DVD drive; they just wouldn't exchange it as if we were lying! There is a huge PC World near Brent Cross. Biggest in Europe they say, and I love going around seeing what is new. Sorry to the guys at PC World but I will always by online as its cheaper! Dealing with your people when things go wrong is just too much heartache.

The store itself provides a lot of eye candy and probably uses enough power to light a rural settlement of computer hackers bent on world domination. Still, at least you can help Earth's plight by upgrading your home's lights to energy savers, which are available in every shape and colour for a really good price.

I was so impressed that I ended up buying something else. Of course you can buy things more cheaply on the internet, but you wouldn't get the service and the advice and the after sales. I recently bought 2 converters for my pc screen. They did not work so I returned to the shop to be…read moretold there was a no refund policy on that particular product ( which I was not told at time of purchase and was told that "I should have read my receipt" which you only get AFTER you have bought an item). I was offered a store credit so went ahead and ordered a pair of Logitech headphones so that I would not lose out on the money now tied into the shop. I was quoted a total price of £84.99 (priced in other stores at £60) and told it would take 3-4 days. Over the next 5 weeks, several phone calls which were NEVER returned and visits back to the store I finally get a call saying my item was ready to pick up. At the counter the same sales assistant happily smiled and said " that will be £139.99 please"... 20 minutes of lame excuses followed and I was told that there was nothing they could do, they could not sell for the original quoted price or give a refund on the original. I ended up being given the original converts back with absolutely no use for them at all now.... Will NEVER buy from there again.... Terrible attitudes, customer services and very over priced items...

Days before, I'd spoken with my camera guy about how much tape we needed. "Do you think we need more than a couple hours of tape?" he asked. "Yes," I said. "Okay," he replied, "I'll be sure to get some." So there we were, on a Sunday afternoon on Kings Road in Chelsea, setting up the shot with all of our rental equipment, when the camera guy says to me, "uh... I need to go to a store somewhere and buy some more tape." "What?" I asked. "Yeah, I mean, if you think we'll need more than an hour of tape..." "Of course we need more than an hour! We'll need well more than an hour...." "Yeah, so, I need to go to a store and pick up some more tape..." I looked at him incredulously. "This is crazy... I have no idea where in the world you think you're going to find HD mini DV tapes anywhere near King's Road on a Sunday at 4:30 in the afternoon..." He looked up and down the street... then pointed to the Sony Centre, which was miraculousy a stone's throw away... as if it had materialized out of nowhere right then and there... I'd never even noticed it there before... "They might have some," he said. And what do you know? They did. We bought their last tapes. I consider myself indebted to Sony for even contemplating setting up such a shop on King's Road.... so here's a big public thank you to Sony for the shop's very existence in Chelsea... and another big thank you for keeping it open till 5pm on Sundays!

It really sells it all. Now, I will admit that as a typical girl, I am probably a DIY imbecile, and yet the staff has always been very patient and helpful with me, which I will forever be grateful for. This is the perfect shop for all your electronic needs whether you are a tech expert or just desperately trying to fix a household object.

The guys in here are always ready to help and must find it pretty amusing when I try and explain in nontechnical terms what I'm looking for like "oh you know that things that connects the little plug with the even smaller one" and they are like oh you mean the male/female adaptor.

They occasionally have good offers on things like toasters and electric fans, although their prices are generally higher than DIY stores - but then, you're paying for local convenience. They will order in items such as light fittings, and have an extensive range of catalogues from which to choose them. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful and, on the day of my last visit, were going beyond the call of duty to help and comfort a woman customer who had lost her handbag and shopping when the taxi she had arrived in drove off with her possessions still inside!
