I loved the experience and the guys were super nice. Most of the guys there can speak English and French. I got my handle bar tape changed and bought the tape from the bike store. They carry higher-end bike parts and gears but it wasn't too ridiculously priced. They offered me a discount for a cafe around the corner so I could go get a coffee and wait to get my bar taped changed. I think they also offer student discounts but I was just so thrilled with the service and my new handlebar tape I forgot to ask for it. I would definitely go back! Montreal Blog also rated them as one of the best bike shops around the city. They were not wrong!! http://www.mtlblog.com/2014/04/best-montreal-bike-shops/

And they told me to use a phone to call someone, and that someone forwarded me to their colleague, who is apparently a voicemail machine. Well there was one more place nearby, so figured to give it a shot. Finally came here, and guess what? They .. rent bikes. $15 for 4 hrs. Very reasonable. Great bike, it was a Norco. Rode all around Mount Royal and it was a breeze. Brought it back, no hassle. Don't bother with the other guys, who may or may not have bikes and don't even know where to refer you. We wandered into Bicycletterie JR without any reservations or anything, and within 15 minutes we were on the road. Small brands grown out communities of people focused on similar passions/interests. Brakeless is as much a clothing shop as it is a bike shop. Its interesting to contrast the experience of walking into Brakeless and walking into Off The Hook, another "streetwear" shop in Montreal. Im not dogging Off The Hook by any means. I liked that shop a lot. But there is something raw and unique about Brakeless. Authentic is an overused word, but if it applies anywhere it applies here. You can see it in the palette of more subdued colors of the clothing. You can feel it in the shops rough around the edges charm. And most of all if you spend a few minutes chatting with Sylvester, the owner, you know its all coming from the right place. Im honestly bummed I will probably only make it here once a year. Frederick, our guide, took eight of us over a 7 mile tour of some of the classic neighborhoods of Montreal. His love for his hometown truly shines. We took about three hours because he made a point of showing us some classic Montreal native spots such as an immense farmers market filled with luscious locally grow produce. If we were staying long enough to cook, I'd be heading straight back there tomorrow . Frederick is a certified guide and while his knowledge is near encyclopedic, he never drones. He always invites questions and made us laugh a lot. Ask him how poutine got its name. The pacing of the tour was perfect, not too slow, not too strenuous. It is obvious that JF is deeply knowledgable about urbanism, bicycle culture, and the way our built environment impacts our experiences of life. The details he pointed out and the places he brought us are easily overlooked, but super interesting. It is rare to find someone who takes so little for granted in their home environment. This tour was not just a lesson about history and some neighborhoods of Montréal, but about how to observe the world around us. I would give six stars if possible. It did not hurt that the weather was perfect. If it had rained, probably only five stars. It was a fantastic three hours and a highlight of our visit to MTL.
