Jack’s Custom Woodworks

Boyle Heights

Jack did an OUTANDING job on our cabinets. My mom had worked with three different carpenters…read morebefore, including Closet World, and each one either did a poor job or did not seem to know what they were doing. Jack was a complete turnaround. He was very kind, professional, and clearly skilled. He knew exactly what needed to be done and delivered beautiful results at a very affordable price. We could not be happier with the work and highly recommend him!

We had a hideous concrete slab that called itself a porch. For years, we didn't really know what…read moreto do with it, so we ignored it. But after redoing our garden beds and restoring our original exterior windows, that hideous slab became un-ignorable. It turns out finding someone willing to build a new porch is really difficult. We spoke to six different companies and most wouldn't be transparent about their pricing, quoted insanely high numbers, had spend minimums, tried to forgo the vision entirely to be closer to (but still above) our budget, or never replied. We reached out to Jack, not expecting much different, but were immediately impressed by the time he took to speak with us about our porch and design goals. He walked us through different considerations, proposed different materials, and answered questions to be sure we were all aligned and the integrity of everything would be solid. He then sent us an incredibly detailed recap and proposal of what he would do with itemized pricing, really underscoring his authenticity in wanting to be a true partner. Throughout every step of the project, Jack made sure to consult with us through any decision we needed to make or reconsider based on the actuality of what we were encountering. In construction, the only guarantee is that something will come up, requiring flexibility, and every time it did, Jack had solutions that actually ended up exceeding our original design. He was also incredibly patient whenever we deliberated on different ideas or when we were moving through his workspace. His commitment to our project and work was noticed and remarked on by multiple neighbors, as he and his team worked through long days and some brutal summer heat to get it done before we had family visiting. In fact, several stopped Jack, or us, to get his contact for themselves. Whenever it came to the finishing details, like custom balusters and top rails, Jack was quick to be critical of when a piece didn't turn out as well as the rest, pointing it out and starting over. Jack also had to laminate multiple pieces of wood together and seek out a specific machine to achieve the custom rounded top rail we were after for the new railing. By the end of it, Jack delivered us a porch that exceeded our expectations and our initial hopes. Having worked with so many vendors on so many different projects, we taught ourselves to not expect perfection but in this case, Jack delivered the closest to that of anyone, ever. The truth is, there just aren't many craft people like Jack around anymore. And there are even far fewer with customer service as incredible as their talent. Jack is one in a million and we consider ourselves supremely lucky to have met him and that he had availability in his project schedule.

He identified the issue quickly and highlighted the lazy workmanship from our kitchen installers (Taranto Construction, Inc in Claremont, CA) who were subcontracted through Lowe's (who we purchased our kitchen from). The shelves collapsed because of loose screws from lazy installers at Taranto Construction, Inc. It's infuriating to have to pay someone to come solve an issue that goes back to completely loose screws in the hardware that would've taken an extra 5 seconds to properly tighten at the initial install. But they know people won't see it, so they cut corners. DO NOT EVER USE TARANTO CONSTRUCTION INC in Claremont CA for a kitchen install, or any Lowe's in the surrounding area, as this is who they refer the work to. After spending a short amount of time with Walter, it's clear he knows what he is doing and is a professional. He even tightened and adjusted other cabinet doors in our kitchen he noticed issues with that had nothing to do with the cabinet shelves he came to fix. He was a very nice guy and I was glad I called him. Thank you very much.

Walter is a true CRAFTSMAN, not just some guy who works for a chain who wants to convince you to…read morebuy their product. We did a reface of our cabinets and Walter was the right guy to do it! Walter worked with us to pick the right product and colors. We went with Shinnoki real wood veneer panels. They are beautiful and durable. Once they got the veneer up, they routed then hand-filed all of the openings. Then that meticulously painted the face frames to match the veneer. They even painted around the drawers where you can see very little of the painting they did. That shows a lot of pride! Walter also gave us the look of frameless cabinets even though we would have had to replace the cabinet boxes in order to make them frameless. That's a lot of extra work. We got a custom job for less than the price of a non-custom job. In the photos you can see the detail I'm talking about. I've included before and after pictures. The before pictures are all dark, ugly drawers and doors. The after pictures are the modern, two-tone look. In one photo in which I have a drawer pulled out with hot pads in it, Walter designed that and made it fit. There was not a drawer in there before because it's under the stove and the gas line was in the way. But Walter moved it. Walter's very conscientious and not afraid to tell you if he thinks something is not going to look good. He'll do whatever you want, but we learned that he knows what he's talking about.
