The downside is the prices -- definitely on the steep side compared to other places. Part of what you're paying for is the benefit of a local shop, and the service is good, just nothing that really stands out. Overall, it's solid for fresh local meats, but not always the best value.

What a treat to have a local butcher! This newly opened meaterie sells the usual beef, chicken and…read morepork cuts but also makes breakfast sausage, summer sausages, jerky, etc. and they'll make any of it out of your hunted game as well. The selection of BBQ and hot sauces is out of this world and you can also pick up potato chips and other snacks and drinks here. My favorite thing was a basket of small packages of summer sausage and cheeses cut into cubes -- a low-fat high-protein snack for $2.50. Perfect!

The building has a distinct, unpretentious feel. Inside, you'll find a dark, cozy dining area lined with long wooden picnic tables, string lights. The staff is very friendly and while we ate the owner stopped by several times to make sure we were happy. We ordered a double Wimpy burger and a smoked chicken sandwich with a side of spicy mac salad. The owner took our order, and knowing my husband's love for a good burger, he custom-made us a deluxe double smash and a double Gouda smash with bacon to try! All of the burgers were incredibly impressive. They grind the meat in-house, which you can absolutely taste in how juicy the smash burgers are. If I had to pick my personal favorite out of the three, the Gouda takes first place, followed by the double Wimpy, and then the deluxe double. Every single burger was unique and delicious. I didn't ask to confirm, but I'm pretty sure the deluxe featured a perfect slice of heirloom tomato. The smoked chicken sandwich was also fantastic--the chicken was tossed with BBQ sauce, making it incredibly juicy, and it came topped with two crispy onion rings on a soft hoagie bun. Needless to say, we had to take half of our chicken sandwich and mac salad home. We seriously can't wait to go back and try their brisket. What a gem for West Salem!
