My car was experiencing loud clicking sounds while parking and sharp turns of the steering wheel. After researching online, I thought it might be a CV joint. I found Vu's and called. Long answered and quoted lower than expected. He scheduled an appointment. Today I went in, a week earlier than scheduled. My error. Fully expecting to be turned away, Long decided to take my car on a drive to try to diagnose it on the fly. We went for a quick road test, and he put it up on the lift and checked it out. After he and another mechanic looked it over, they found it was just a loose part in the wheel well. He ended up charging me far less than originally quoted and got me in and out within an hour with a workable vehicle. Throughout the entire visit he was friendly and efficient, but mostly honest. Well all things considered I was well treated and felt they were honest and reliable. I have only been there once, and looking at the less than favorable review will reserve judgement until I have more interactions. Will say that a friend who is a Volvo fan/fanatic thinks Vu's are the best. They were also honest: I had been told byAffordable Tire & Brake Co. @10 and Hawthorne that my rear brakes were at 10% (yes they were bold enough to put it in writing on the bill) which is why I took it to Vu. He told me no, the brakes had 50% remaining. !!!! He was v. Curious as to which shop had mislead me. Don't do it!! Glad to hear some of you had a good experience, but be careful! I am writing this review right now after being told by another reputable mechanic that the catalytic converter that Vu put in my Jetta was second hand, in terrible shape and the work was shoddy! I have to spend another $1,200 to replace the converter. My emissions light went on only 4 months after a $1,600 repair bill at Vu's. He also put the O2 sensors in the wrong place! Seriously, do your homework before taking your car here and make sure he is using NEW parts. This is my first review on Yelp ever so I am not just a complainer. Okay where do i begin with this car repair shop? First of all, i've been a customer since 2009, and since then i've never been disappointed in them. They're the best kept secret of Portland because they're cheap in cost repairs and car parts, and most importantly they're very honest with their repairs and other car maintenance they might find. Before that, I was with Firestone Auto Care when i first got my car in 2004, and yet every time i go into for any maintenance, there were always these additional maintenances they found and in need of repairs. At times i wonder if Firestone was telling the truth o just throwing out fake maintenances to keep the money rolling into their business establishment. Especially basic oil changes, they'd charge me high prices "high mileage" oils instead of the usual 5W-30SAE motor oil my car requires. Finally, I've had enough, and decided to end my business with Firestone and their constant frauds of endless car problems that seems to always pop up every time i visit. A friend of mine told me about Vu Car Care and was distrustful at first but I figured let me give them a chance at it and see how it goes. For my oil change, it was cheap, and they basically told me my car has very high mileage, to just use any cheap 10W-30 motor oil which works just as well for my car with high mileages, so I've been changing oil with them since then, and again, it's cheap compared to Firestones oil change prices. In Aug. 2010, I took my car to WA state DMV to get evaluated for my annual tag renewals, they'd found a couple of problems with my car that needed to be fixed. I got the official document printed out with the listed problems, immediately took it to Vu's he took care of the problems right there and it didn't cost much as i compared the prices around each car repair shop. The next day I want to WA state DMV to get re-evaluated and I PASSED!! Along the years, my car has been doing fine, then I'd find problems that'd pop up here and there, and i'm off to Vu's. They took care of each problems, I asked them if they found any additional problems with my car as a necessary preventative maintenance, and they said overall my car is good. I've held this secret for years so that in hopes that Vu Car Care isn't as inundated with customers and that I can get my car in without having to wait for days until it's ready, because they're the only car repair shop in Portland with cheap repair prices and INTEGRITY OMG. But that would be selfish of me, and I can no longer holdout on them, because then I'd feel I'm doing them a disfavor of not spreading good news about their outstanding business. It's now December 2014, i just got back from a 6-months military overseas deployment and found my alternator had died after 10 years. And of course, I went to Vu's and got it changed out for a fair price. After that alternator change, that's when i fought with my conscious and decided to give credit where credit is due, and write this review about them. I brought my car to Vu a few months ago to replace the coolant recovery bottle in the cooling system because there was a leak. He replaced the bottle but not the hoses, saying that they were OK. However, the car has over 175,000 miles on it, so the hoses should have been replaced. I kept noticing coolant leaks on the floor of my garage so I brought it back. First he said that there was no leak. Then he found a leaking hose. Rather than replace the entire hose ($45 part), he only replaced part of it and charged me $12.50 for the part, but $90 for labor! I would have gladly paid a few extra dollars for the piece of mind that would come with the installation of a new part. Also, if they had only done what most good shops would do and replaced the hoses, I would not have had to bring it back and essentially pay double for labor (coolant bottle & hose repair). It could all have been done at the same time when they replaced the bottle. Now, I still have old hoses (and the summer is here) so I will have to watch like a hawk for any future leaks. I was also initially charged more than I was quoted for the coolant bottle because they said that it cost them time to drive me a few blocks away to where I waited for the repair. Of course they did not discuss this extra charge before hand (and most good shops would not charge extra anyway). In addition, they wanted to charge me hundreds more to fix an inconsistency in the heating and cooling system which resolved itself when I replaced the coolant bottle. Apparently, there must have been an air bubble in the system. I will look for another place to go as I am very disappointed by their service. read more

I didn't actually end up having service done at Vu's because of the incredibly poor treatment I received. I went in to get a dent fixed, and before they even took me seriously enough to give me an estimate, time frame, etc, the couple working there continuously went on and on about how many dings my car has and berated me for being a terrible driver. If it was simply one comment I wouldn't be that upset but they went on for a good 5 minutes, joking at my expense, asking if I ordered my driver license online illegally, etc. I do have a few scratches on my car but it is *really* not as bad as they were making it out to be. It was really demeaning and I was surprised by what a mean way it was to treat a future customer-- honestly, it felt like sexist/ageist-driven behavior. As a young woman, approaching auto shops can be an intimating experience and the treatment I received at Vu's is exactly the reason people feel this way. I would never bring my business here and would not recommend it to others. read more

One of these last times when an unusual and expensive piece on my Mitsubishi needed replacing, they were kind enough to recommend I find one affordable to me and they would install it. Vu's is great. I've been going there for years. Used to live in the neighborhood and even though I don't anymore I still bring my cars here. Reasonably priced and trust worthy. I don't know what Michele A. is talking about because I have never met a more honest mechanic. I had problems with one of my cars passing DEQ. I took it several different places and they changed this and that, still wouldn't pass. I brought it to Vu's and he honestly told me that even if I paid him to do all these things it still wouldn't pass and it wasn't worth the money. DON'T GO HERE. YOU WILL GET RIPPED OFF. One star is too many! I bought a '95 Subaru Legacy from "Ethan" at Vu's in August of 2012, off their Craigslist ad, for what seemed like a reasonable price in comparison to others of the same age/condition/mileage. Come December I went to a local Jiffy Lube for a quick oil change and found out my car, which was reading approximately 155,000 on the odometer, had over 225,000 miles at its last service at that Jiffy Lube. When I immediately got on the phone and called both Ethan's cell phone and Vu's shop, they both claimed they'd never sold the vehicle and both were extremely squeamish that I said I found out my mileage had been rolled back almost 100,000 miles. The owner, whose name I forgot, got defensive and creepy, telling me "Ethan" didn't work there despite very obviously being related to him. Before I hung up I said he could look forward to further information from more official prosecution sources. (State law doesn't care about vehicles with rolled by mileage over 10 years old though? Huge bummer on my stupid behalf.) Theses dudes got SUPER FUCKING CREEPY when I tried to take things further, which left me feeling unsafe and very, very, very ripped off. When I went through the existing maintenance reports I found all of them were falsified. It's possible that the previous owner(s) could have done that but it seems extremely shady and unprofessional to not pay attention to these sorts of mechanical precautions. This transaction was in part my own stupidity which I am more than willing to admit, but their "honest guy" attitude is a load of bullshit and they will try to steal from you, no questions asked. The service here is excellent. It's a family-operated automotive shop by Long (the owner) and Ly (Long's brother). While your car is in the shop getting fixed, they will lend you a loaner. They go out of their way for their customers such as picking your car at your house and dropping your car at your house when done. This shop is located in a friendly neighborhood. A lot of neighbors stops by to chit-chat with the workers. During lunch and dinner, the neighbors are always welcome to join them. You are not treated as another customer but you are treated as family. I always get my BMW tune-ups and oil change here because it doesn't cost a fortune like Kuni. read more

after 5 years of trusting Vu's I was not only treated badly by the man who says he was the owner (and I guess I was assisted all the times before by his nephews) but I was actually accused of something that simply wasn't true. I need my mechanic to be in my corner and help explain things to me, not alienate and abandon me. I tried to talk this over with him, and explain that I valued their service and opinion but he said he was sure I was going to try to sue him (which was completely unwarranted). So after exchanging thousands of dollars for work over the last 5 years and recommending them to family and friends, I have been alienated and abandoned. I also know in my heart of hearts that if I were a man, I would never have been treated this way. It really sucks, and I do believe the nephews there are more sincere and earnest but I could never go back there again. As far as I'm concerned Vu's Car Care has the best long term track record for outstanding customer service, integrity and trustworthiness of any business in Portland. I've been their customer since 2004. Back then, I had a 1995 Dodge Caravan with oil leaks. I had quotes anywhere from $400-$900 to get them repaired, so I was really skittish about investing that much money to fix a relatively moderate vehicle problem on an auto that didn't have that much road life left to it. After checking out the Caravan, the owner Long Vu called to tell me "the bad news": he said it was indeed expensive to fix those oil leaks....$167...!!! That was the first of many nice surprises I had with Vu's, and what instantly turned me into a customer for life (as long as I live in the hood.) As well as maintaining my older vehicles, Vu's has been the unbeatable resource for my family of "Beater Cars"...cheap, reliable transportation. My latest Vu-mobile is a 1997 Honda Accord that I've owned for two years. In fact, that's what prompted me to finally write this review: it took two years for this nearly 20 year old car to need a repair. Till now, I've just kept it gassed up and had the oil changed and recently replaced the battery. Had Triple A tow her in on a Sunday for a probable starter issue. Just left the key in their dropbox, and will expect a call on Monday with better news than I would get from any other shop in the state! It's a rare thing to have peace of mind when you leave your car at the repair shop without even being certain what's wrong with it...knowing that it's in the best of hands. I've been coming here for the past two years and couldn't be happier. The service is excellent and honest. There have been times when the check engine light has been on in my car, and they told me that the issue didn't need to be fixed (even though they certainly could have told me I needed to, and I wouldn't know the difference). They've fixed small issues for me at no charge. They have given me rides home when my car needed to stay with them for a while. The prices are great. While searching for a car on Craigslist I came across the an ad for a Subaru for sale, the one that I'd been searching for! and it had only been up for an hour! so I emailed the link with my phone number listed and got a call back from a man that said he was the owner of an auto shop called Vu's Car Care not far from my house in SE Portland. I told him i was really serious about buying his Subaru! He said he was firm in the price, I said not a problem for me. I asked him if I could come see the car if he was not available. He said he lives in Hillsboro and wouldn't be able to make it that day, but his employee would be at his shop Vu's Car Care where the Subaru was parked, and he would show it to me. So I go down to Vu's Car Care and meet his employee, that was reeking of booze. He gives me the keys and i test drive it, drives great. I get the Vin# to do a Car Fax on it, Car Fax is good. So I call the owner back and want, to meet with him about buying the car. I suggested the next day, a Sunday (Jan 18th 2015). He says he has church on Sunday, can't do Sunday. Okay I said what day would be best for you? He suggests Monday (Jan 19th 2015) , he says he'll be at his shop all day till 7PM. I say perfect! I'll be there after work at 6PM . Hes says great I'll be there with the paperwork. That Monday (Jan 19th 2015) morning I get a text from him that says "I sold the car, would you like to look at another"? WHAT THE FUCK?!? Had a terrible experience. Initial a/c repair quoted at $300 was inflated to $1300 by the time I came to pick the car up. No one from the shop called me to tell me about the over-run. I had put off getting my 1998 Jetta fixed for a long time because I didn't think I could afford it. The dealer had told me it was going to be way more than the car was even worth. It was leaking oil really bad, and I finally decided to take it in to Vu's based on my neighbor's recommendation. Took my car in at 9:30am, and they had it back to me by 2:30pm that day and fixed everything for a small fraction of the price I was initially given. I have gone to Vu's for several years and found them to be honest and reliable and usually lower priced than others. I do a lot of my own mechanical work and know that diagnosis isn't always easy and sometimes unforeseen problems are found. They have always called me in these cases, even waiving charges for parts and labor when they incorrectly diagnosed the problem. Long and Ly are great guys and I like them. Sometimes they go a little over the estimate by replacing belts or other general maintenance items. If this is a concern to you, make sure that you have a good understanding of what's included. Might want to have them write the estimated price in their book to avoid confusion, since they are pretty informal. I have had them recommend used parts to save money, but never without consulting me. I have had NO problems with their mechanical work and would recommend them without hesitation. read more
