Really hard to choose a rating. I was very much between a 2 and 3. I found this place because my friend just moved to the area. I live in Pittsburgh, so it was a bit of a hike for me to schedule an appointment here. But for a good salon I am willing to make the trip. I scheduled my appointment for a Saturday 2 weeks in advance. I specifically went here because they were an Aveda salon and I had been to and liked other Aveda places in the past. They have a super organic feel that I keep wanting to revisit. There is brand loyalty at it's finest. Upon arriving the staff was extremely friendly, offering me their list of services and something to drink. As I was taken upstairs to get my hair done, I was escorted by the girl who was going to do my hair. So I sit down and tell her what I want and the first thing she says is "we don't have enough time to do a full highlight. Especially with how much hair you have. You'll have to come back to finish that" This is the point in which I should have said, "Okay, thanks anyways!" and walked out. Come on! I am a new customer. If this was an issue for you, you should have asked me when I made my appointment 2 weeks back if I had long or thick hair. Amateur move, Vans. Now the whole visit I am basing what I have done on the time schedule they set. I felt rushed and as if I was taking up too much of her time. I hate feeling that way at a salon. I should feel relaxed at a place like this. And above all, I work a ton and definitely don't have time to make 2 trips to your salon for a service that should be done in a few hours. Second I was asked if I wanted my hair blow dried. I said "if you have time" because she clearly was busy as her phone is ringing to tell her the next customer is there. Hello! It's snowing outside! If you want to ask me this question in the heat of summer, by all means, go for it. When it's snowing outside, if your salon let's me walk out with wet hair, shame on you! Third thing that sort of irked me. I was charged for a cut. But she cut my bangs and did a small amount of thinning of my hair. If you are going to charge me for a cut, take the time to trim up my hair, please! Overall, I left feeling like I paid $100 +tip for nothing. 1.) I thought the color was too yellow. In some lights I look at my hair and think it looks like a box color that didn't quite sit long enough to highlight all the way. Perhaps she gets a lot of people in there and opts to go more conservative. ( Not one person noticed I had highlights put into my hair because it was so close to the color it was when I went in! And this was the first I had it done in 6 months! ) One thing I learned is I'll never hit up a salon without an example picture of what I want. 2.) I felt like I got a half a haircut and paid full price. I even had to specifically make her go back and do SOMETHING with the side swooping bangs I wanted. She put no layer or texture to them... just cut them with a hard edge. I went home and immediately cut them myself. This is probably a great salon for people who live in the area and need a simple service done. I just don't see myself returning. NOTE: I did tell them via email about my concerns. Got a call that day, which was awesome of them. The owners had the employee working call me. Props to the owners for that! Unfortunately the call I received was sort of an apology and it's also not our fault because you have lots of hair type of voicemail. It's already super uncomfortable to complain to a salon. It just made me feel guilty. I don't want to go in and sit with the same girl for an hour around a salon with employees who think I am just there complaining. Seems so... I dunno, embarrassing and awkward? I am also so swamped at work that I don't have time to go back in their hours in the next few weeks, so by then my "window of fixing the problem" will likely be closed. DO NOT come here for a haircut. I went in for a split-end trim and shaping, I asked for long layers, texture, and NO blunt ends. I left - the first time - with no layers, one side a full inch longer than the other, and blunt ends that appeared to be chopped at with safety scissors. I commented that my hair didn't look like what I asked for and was told when I went home and did it my way it would all fall into place. Shouldn't you leave a salon looking great? I did not. When I got home and realized just how bad it was I called to schedule an appt. to get it "fixed" they sent me back to Nicki, which I questioned her ability since clearly she could not give me what I wanted the first time but they tried to re-assure me and scheduled me two days later. I could not imagine how much worse it could have become. Nicki continued to cut the same horrible uneven blunt hair cut only shorter this time. By this point I was down about 5 inches of hair! She finally just threw in the towel on me and had someone else take over. She preceded to maniacally dry cut harsh blunt layers into my hair. We all were to aware of what a horrible thing they had done. Nicki disappeared from view and the woman who stepped in to "fix" (hack away) my hair offered me an apology, my money back, AND a fifty dollar gift certificate-specifying that it could be used on products and spa services. I currently can not wear my hair down in any form and will likely have to wear it up to disguise the cut for a few months while I try to grow back what I lost. Came here with a wedding party in preparation for a bachelorette party. People who had their hair done were very pleased; however, all of us who had our makeup done wiped it off in the car and redid it ourselves. 1.) I was taken to a room and told to to lay on the esthetician's (sp) table. Weird. 2.) the person who was doing my makeup immediately stated that she had "only 30 minutes" to do my makeup and asked if she could just "build" on what I already had on my face. ?? What? 3.) she asked if I sleep on my right side bc my right eye is "starting to droop". Good to know! I'm 38 with a droopy eye. 4.) when asked what I wanted for eye makeup I stated a "smokey eye". She then warned me that I'm "getting too old" for a dark smokey eye she should stick to lighter shades for my smokey eye. She then told me she was giving me "as a gift" eyelash extensions to mask my droopy eye. I love makeup. I use dark shades for evening smokey eye and rock it. This was a huge disappointment and frankly insulting at every turn. My makeup looked AWFUL. The lash extensions looked Fab but fell off in the morning. I figure I paid $50 plus a tip (because I'm nice) for the extensions that lasted approximately 12 hours. The girls at Sephora do a better job. You couldn't even tell I was wearing makeup at all which was NOT the goal. Again, hair people were awesome!! Im now super self conscious about my eyes. Overall, not cool. At all. I have gone to this salon for about 6 months....coming off the worst haircut of my life, it was awesome to have a hairstylist who really knew what she was doing...nicki always does a great job...she really takes the time to listen to me and I have always been really happy with my hair after she does it...she is amazing at color as well! I recently switched salons because I wasn't happy with my old salon, and I was excited to try out this salon because I love Aveda products. Overall, this salon is high-quality and service is good. I always love how my hair looks when I leave (I would recommend Katie - she's very good). The only reason I didn't give this salon 5 stars is because it is quite expensive. Typically, my haircut takes less than 30 minutes, and I end up paying over $60. With color, I pay close to $150. Even though it's pricy, I would still recommend this salon! read more

Be careful. Location and cute exterior are a great draw and it's also an AVEDA salon. But, NEVER select Diane to cut or color your hair. She is the owner. She does what she wants - not what you ask and I believe it's because she only knows one way. She is drama queen as well. She constantly takes calls from her daughter and others WHILE doing your hair. She lets her dog run around the salon (and climb up your leg with dirty, wet feet). Last appt. it took her 4 hours to foil and cut my hair. I sat for 35 minutes with wet hair after the color was done waiting for her to finish another client. I had to come back 1 week later to have her re-do the back because she had left big dark spots - horrible color job! I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!! I gave her 3 chances because I love the location and salon itself - my bad! Don't waste your time or better yet ruin your hair. read more

Got a walk-in shellac manicure here and was seated immediately, which was nice. Ambience was cheerful as well. The store in the front with all their Aveda products was a bit off-putting and messy, though. I would give 0 if possible. Made an appointment online, which was confirmed via email I even sent a that you email confirming I was going to be there. As I was parking my car, I received a phone call 10 minutes before my scheduled appointment telling me my appointment was canceled. I was then put on hold and was on hold until finished parking my car and walked in. They told me there was no way I could get it. I was pretty upset. They did offer a 10% discount on a future service... you can get a better deal in Groupon. There are a lot of spa/ salons in Sewickley who do not cancel your appointment so I would avoid this place. read more

I prefer Aveda products, and having experience with other Aveda salons in other cities, I expected to find a stylist educated and experienced with men's hair. I was convinced to give Vans a try after speaking with the receptionist about the salon and services. My first cut was good. And my experience was professional. But my next two appointments were rushed, and the cut demonstrated the haste the stylist (owner) had with me. Although I did sit in the owner's chair, I felt like the price was high, especially for a men's cut. She did a good job (the first time), but seemed a bit too distracted by her employees, customers, and her phone during subsequent visits. Lesson: Just because they offer men's cuts and sell men's products, does not make every Aveda salon equal. Vans was no exception. Way more oriented to the female client than men. Would I go back? Maybe...if I knew I had their full attention. read more

Though the salon looked nice and the end product of my appointment looked fine, I was taken aback by the unprofessional experience I received as soon as I went upstairs for my appointment. After being told that I would benefit from a (very costly) upgrade to lash extensions, I expressed that, while I understand how beautiful they looked, it wasn't affordable for me at this time. She then responded with, "Well, it's less expensive than smoking. Just saying." After I explained to her that I don't smoke, I realized she may be smelling my morning coffee. This was confirmed after she told me my lashes were twitching due to "all the coffee I had this morning." My brother and I received gift certificates for massages as presents and redeemed them in October 2014. My brother loved his experience and was completely satisfied. I had Kerri Greer as my massage therapist and was 100% satisfied. Not only was she very informative (this was my first massage ever), but very relaxed and friendly. She made sure to ask me about any specific muscular problems as well as general health history so that she could tailor the massage specifically to my needs. I would definitely recommend her, and Vans Salon, to anyone looking for a massage in the western Pittsburgh suburbs! Niki has been my stylist for around four years now and have never been dissatisfied with a hair cut or color. The best thing about Niki is that she listens to her customers and tries to give them what they ask for while making suggestions based upon her experience. The girls at Van are the best around. The atmosphere is always cheerful thanks to a happy staff. I have been going there steadily for men's cuts since 2012 and have yet to walk out feeling disappointed. Even when there has been a last-minute cancellation with my stylist, the staff has taken care of me with another qualified professional without a problem. I know that I am in good hands. They have always been extremely friendly and try very hard to get me a timely appointment, even though I usually call a few days before I want to come in due to my schedule being inconsistent. My stylist, Nikki, is top notch. Every time I go in, I end up with an excellent cut and color. She's super sweet and does everything she can to make sure I am happy with my hair. I would recommend her to anyone. I also started bringing my young children there (2 and 4 years old). Anyone who has kids this young knows that haircuts with this age group don't usually go all that smoothly. I have been going to Vans Salon for over ten years now because of the friendly, warm and yet thoroughly professional atmosphere. The owner, Diane, is my stylist. Over the years she has given me several different cuts and helped me grow my hair while keeping it stylish looking (all women who have tried to go from short to longer hair know what I mean -- keeping it "stylish" while growing out is a special challenge that only the most gifted stylists can accomplish). I have lived in different countries as well as different cities in the US; NEVER have I found a stylist like Diane! I travel frequently and have gotten compliments from strangers on my haircuts -- including flight attendants who, no doubt, see many many women as a part of their job. Even though I now live over 40 minutes away from Vans and in much closer proximity to several different highly regarded salons, I still go to Diane -- despite the crazy busy schedule that I have. She gives me advice on hair, hair products, skin care and more. Her Salon Manager, Dee, is a total delight as well! Always willing to work with the client's schedule. Diane has even come in early on a morning just because I needed to catch a flight and needed a haircut before my trip. Having now come to know Diane over the course of the years, I not only appreciate her skill at styling but also her strength as a business owner who is a single mom to a beautiful child. I don't know how she juggles everything that she does. She is always looking to keep her clients happy, engaged and the environment refreshed.
