They don't take insurance and act like a premium medical facility, but don't live up to it. For my appointment the PA came in and talked/rambled for awhile about potential treatment options, then the doctor came in and talked for 2 min and sent me to PT. I ultimately decided to continue care with and in-network provider but getting records from VSI was a pain. They have an online patient portal with mostly empty tabs. I called to request my xrays and they can't upload them so I requested a CD to pickup. The CD wasn't ready when they said it would be and I had to wait 15 min for it. For my original appointment most of the few bins of snacks for patients were empty. Not a big deal, but shows poor management. I used them years ago and had a good experience, which is why I went back, but my opinion has changed read more

Both VSI and VSI therapy downstairs gave me my life back after a traumatic whiplash injury that resulted in cervical instability. Dr. Bharara gave me a clear diagnosis after years of me searching for answers. He gave me a treatment plan and PRP injections at VSI have been very effective for treating my injury. Dr. Bharara is also incredibly kind and knows how to listen to his patients. I originally went to another doctor at VSI who wasn't able to help my situation, but he knew to direct me to his colleague and for that I am so thankful. VSI is incredibly competent. I've known Melanie Gonzaga for the past 20+ years. She's an amazing soul and a fantastic physical therapist. I hurt myself during the birth of my first child 19 years ago by tearing muscles in my back and glutes that destabilized my lower spine. I was in excruciating pain. The only therapist who could ever relieve my pain was Melanie. I have been her patient for several other injuries because she's the only one I trust. I love that she's hands on! Currently, I have pain in the left side and back of my left leg, which makes it difficult for me to walk. I'm able to use other therapists with zero charge for my insurance, but I choose Melanie because I'd rather pay some money out-of-pocket than to waste my time with other therapists who are unfortunately not as capable and knowable as Melanie. When I wasn't able to consult Melanie, I visited four therapists, an OMM doctor, and a great chiropractor, but Melanie is the only one who could fix my pain. As a long time patient of VSI (8 years) this place and the care has changed. I used to have nothing but excellent care and service (several surgeries since 2017). However, their patient care has decreased quite drastically and they seem to have turned a corner into the typical medical machine as they've grown over the years. I never in my life thought I'd ever have a less than 5 star review of them. The Dr's are the best in the business at surgery and I am grateful for them keeping me moving. However, post-op care has fallen to the wayside and once your out of sight out of mind after your initial follow up you are nothing to them. I will not rip them up and down with the specifics but I am very disappointed in the lack of listening to the patient concerns, what was happening at the time, and lack of follow-up even after follow-up attempts by me. I will likely not travel back here in the future even as I will 90% likely need more surgical intervention. I'm very disappointed on how far off they have fallen in the past couple of years. As a 20 year veteran, it's very hard for me to trust medical providers, especially when it comes to surgery needs due to PTSD. This is one place I always trusted. It's no longer the case. read more

He listens, clarifies, makes eye contact when speaking, allows plenty of time for questions to be answered, is honest, positive, and never rushes through a visit. And he is always on time. the staff at VSI are kind, caring, friendly, helpful and accommodating. The absolute most amazing and skilled doctors. I was a nurse for 29 years. I'd been to two other back surgeons that would not operate despite my MRIs showing significant damage. Dr Jazini placed two cervical discs in for spinal cord compression. Then he also did 2 lumbar fusions two weeks later. The pain post op was minor. I was able to take ES Tylenol effectively. I will be forever grateful to Dr Jazini and his team. read more

This review is a mixture of 5s and 1s The fives are for excellent physical therapists, especially Greg Morris. The 1 is for the chief surgeon, Dr. Colin Haines - if you are an older client over 80 you are likely not to receive treatment - he is apparently leery of getting sued for problems that may be more frequent for oldsters. At age 89 Dr. Haines declined to treat my back problem. He sent me far out in Maryland to an advanced specialist "because he had more advanced facilities in case of problems". I got no benefit. More recently I was refused epidural pain injection for sciatica, again because "my advanced age and previous heart attack". He gave me a referral to Georgetown Hospital where I would presumably be prescribed an MRI (which would be intolerable for me because of sciatica) -just for a pain injection CAVEAT!! read more

However, I will not return to this practice simply because the billing department is incompetent and the billing practices are confusing. If this medical office is outside your insurance network, I would strongly advise you to stay away. Even though I was certainly expecting to go out-of-pocket to a moderate degree, I received two large "surprise" bills from VSI and when I tried getting an explanation from the billing department, they engaged in double-speak and made the situation even more confusing. I'm an MD, so I know what good health care is. This organization is the top notch, best medical care I've had in Virginia. They spent a lot of time with me during my consultation. I had an incidental finding on my MRI. Dr. Good discussed it with me. Then his PA discussed it with me. Then his PA followed up in 8 weeks to go over it again. All health care should be like this. I usually don't give much thought to the office staff experience, but they were also very professional an easy to deal with. read more

RUN FAR AWAY. They will tell you they accept your insurance and then they tell you that they are out of network. They don't accept what your insurance company says you owe out of network and jack up the price higher. For example, my insurance said I owe $644 yet VA Spine institute will only accept $1033. They push surgeries and are just a factory. Find someplace else in network! Maybe if they spent less on their pretty space they would be able to accept what insurance pays. Also they charge a $100 facility fee just to get an injection. Go to National Spine and Pain center and they don't charge a "facility" fee. read more

I came here after I was referred by a chiropractor who suspected I have very mild scoliosis and thought it'd be a good idea to see a spine specialist. I saw Dr. Haines who really put me into a panic about it. Even though I have no symptoms, he insisted on an MRI. There was a benign neurological finding - something again this office made me overly concerned about. They threw around these scary medical terms and made me think the worst. I ended up seeing one of the top neurologists in DC and he assured me it was absolutely nothing to worry about. As for the scoliosis itself, he said the curves were so minor that he wouldn't even call it that. He warned me against the Spine Institute saying that they can often mislead people in an effort to get them to do one of their 'experimental therapies'. That's fitting with my experience - they gave me the scare of my life over nothing. read more

I met with the physian's assistant Khushboo Khan as a follow up appointmnet to low back pain after 6 weeks of physical therapy and a series of x-rays of my lumbar area. Mr. Khan informed me of "not good news" that I would probably need surgery for as soon as I sat down for spondylothesis. When I asked what grade it was he did not answer the question, but told how many millimeters of slippage it was, leaving out the information this was a grade 1. (Grade 1 is typically treated with exercise that includes core stabilization unless there is evidence of instability or nerve damage, which I do not have). He never asked how my therapy was going. I asked what he observed on my x-rays. He did not have an answer. I asked for a copy of my x-ray report. He asked my why I wanted that. He finally gave me the report, along with an order for an MRI, telling me I needed to meet with the doctor after I had the MRI, and with his arms crossed over his chest and said I could have nerve damage if I let this progress any further. I felt Mr. Khan had no interest hearing how I was feeling because he never asked. Further, he was condescending was not giving me information regarding the grade of spondylothesis or the options for treatment, which I would have expected from a medical professional. True medical professionals LISTEN to their patients and do what is in the best interest of the patient. I did NOT find this attitude at this practice, and I will not recommend this practice to anyone in my field. read more

My family is so happy to have found Virginia Spine Institute. My uncle had spinal fusion with Dr. Schuler 8 years ago. He is now 60 years old and so happy with his ability to function. He loves to work out in the gym daily and be active around the home. We always see him up in ladders working, doing yard work, and working on projects around the house. He says he wouldn't be able to continue being a "young man" if it wasn't for his lumbar fusion! Dr. Schuler and the staff were so kind and efficiently took care of him due to his work schedule. I am beyond impressed with the Spine Institute and Dr. Schuler. The facility was clean and well run. The facility has everything anyone could need in regards to their spine health- surgeons, radiology, pain management, physical therapy, and research- all in one place. Dr. Schuler and his PA, nurse, radiologist and office managers took their time to listen to me and provide thorough explanations. They showed compassion and care. But the most impressive piece was the flow of the entire experience; everyone I met with worked together and efficiently. There was no more then a 10 minute period where I was waiting to be seen. I was seen first by the nurse who asked me about my medical history. Next, the PA who completed the physical exam and asked more extensive questions. I then went for x-rays. And lastly, I met with Dr. Schuler and the PA and nurse together. Dr. Schuler reviewed my x-rays- both current and past- and discussed them with me, did a physical exam, and asked me questions. Together the three of them laid out a plan of attack and reviewed it with me. They didn't push medication or surgery. They offered a wide range of possible treatments. To clarify, the PAs, nurses, and staff at the facility are lovely from what I've experienced. The number of stars is because, similar to another reviewer, the doctor I saw rushed me toward surgery from my very first appointment. I thankfully got a second opinion and learned that I was nowhere near that point. Within six weeks, my pain (and associated muscle weakness) had gotten better on its own. I've made changes (more aware of my posture, got a standing desk, will start PT) and am very grateful that I went to another practice. read more

This practice is TOP NOTCH! - The doctors are caring, clear, and just OUTSTANDING! - The staff is friendly, thorough, and flexible - The facility (especially their new building) is BEAUTIFUL! The experience of being a patient at VSI started with minor back pain many years ago. They're conservative in their approach so most visits led to Physical Therapy (they also have an advanced PT practice with the latest modalities) - but when I had to deal with two herniated discs last year in my lower/lumbar spine - I'm SO glad I consulted with Dr. Colin Haynes here! Dr. Haynes provided me excellent guidance on how to work with my diagnosis, and again we opted against surgery, so with PT I was getting better...he also informed me about their leading-edge REGENERATIVE methods and we decided to do PRP. During my consultations, I saw an article written about another one of their doctors that referred to them as having a "compassionate approach". This was the exact feeling when going in for the epidural injections, so I can get the PRP to help me heal my spinal/root nerves. Dr. Haynes even made some statements that you never hear from doctors: - something about minimizing surgery, but for regenerative treatments, he offered to treat other Facet Joints to strengthen my spine - as I had some last-minute questions, he said "we have ALL the time in the World for you here..." Wow! - and he coached me through the procedure, which can be uncomfortable. Not only him - but everyone I have dealt with there are just QUALITY PEOPLE. I could not be happier with my experience at Virginia spine Institute. I was suffering from what I perceived as extreme lower back pain. I was convinced that I likely was going to have to have some sort of surgery when I presented to the doctors and staff at the Institute. However they took their time in evaluating, training, and diagnosing me and The best treatment for me ended up being short term drugs and therapy. This reduced my pain from a nine out of 10 to0 or one out of 10. They did educate me, and now I better understand, what treatments I might need in the future over the rest of my life, but I now feel I have a true partner as I move forward for quality back and spine health. read more

Dr. Good was patient, caring and knowledgeable and his NP was very thorough. I was never rushed and felt heard and cared for, which is quite a difference from the last spinal surgeon that treated me. *update* I can't stress enough the importance of getting a second and even a third opinion before getting treatment or surgeries. As great as the service was at VSI, it does seem that I was getting rushed to have surgery, and not really given much hope to explore other non surgical options. After only one other opinion, I'm now looking at several non surgical treatments and couldn't be happier I didn't rush to get a multi-level fusion like VSI was wanting to schedule me for. I worked with Dr Suback for over nine months and got no better, When I took the MRI results to INOVA and Georgetown they both immediately identified a less complex problem needing immediate surgery. Prior to the completely successful surgery. I contact Dr, Suback's office to discuss the others findings and twice after the surgery I have requested a meeting to determine what happen. No calls every returned. I am sorry but i could not give them a lower rating. The founder was in YPO with me but he never cared to return my call I suffered badly because of not treating the real and clear issue. read more

I saw Dr Good for very mild mid back pain, and he recommended the PT downstairs. I had ZERO neck pain before but Dr Good and the PT thought perhaps my mid back pain was caused by mild degeneration In my cervical discs. The PT put my neck through all sorts of strains to prove this theory and set off an odyssey of horrible neck pain for MONTHS. I had to cancel a trip to Greece, have four cortisone epidurals and more oral steroids and go through untold suffering. Finally a rheumatologist helped me by prescribing a strong anti-inflammatory that knocked out the pain - why Dr Good didn't think of that to begin with I don't know. I called for an appointment.... The receptionist acted as if she was doing me a favor by trying to schedule me. Very low level of awareness as to how she came-off to a prospective patient. Order of events: I called and told her I'd like to schedule an appointment for my shoulder and knee. She asked which doctor I'd like to see. I said, "I'm not sure... I've read good reviews on Dr. Schuler." She smugly and sarcastically said, (word for word), "I don't think you'll be seeing a spine surgeon for a shoulder injury." That's it... No considerate pleasantries for a confused patient. Just a cold, smug comment. Suggestion: "Oh I'm sorry sir, but Dr. Schuler is a spine specialist! However, we'd love to help - we have a Doctor names Dr. Bharara who specializes in shoulders and knees! May I schedule you with him?". That would be the polite thing to do. Maybe Virginia Spine Institute is so busy, that they don't value prospective clients? Maybe she was just having a bad day? I don't know. The rest of the conversation ensued with a couple other comments and transactions that were NOT customer-friendly... Just... I don't know how to put it... Va Spine Institute is the best spinal care you will receive in the United States as far as I am concerned. After enduring many appointments with other surgeons who misdiagnosed me, I finally found my way into Va Spine Institute and it was a breath of fresh air. From the time you walk in, to the time you leave, it is a great experience all around. Dr. Good is my spinal surgeon and has performed two surgeries on me. The first he fused and stabilized my L4-L5 discs about two years ago. A year after my first surgery he removed the screws and rods to relive some discomfort I was having. He has brought me back full circle into the wonderful and active life I was enjoying before my back injury. I couldn't be more happy with the results of my surgery and the outcome all together. He has very good bedside manners and is very compassionate. I had a few complications after my surgery (not due to Dr. Good) & him and Va Spine Institute were there every step of the way! I have also seen Dr. Bharara who is the pain management specialist at Va Spine Institute. He has worked with me over the past several months in coming off of some pain medications. He is really smart and has done wonders for me in getting me off the medicine and back to a more active life. I was very pleased with the care I received. It's clear that the doctors and PAs are experts in their field. Dr. Subach thoroughly explained everything--scan results, diagnosis, treatment options, prognosis--in a way that was clear enough for a non-expert to understand but not at all condescending. Everyone I encountered was friendly and professional. The only reason it's not 5 stars is that they're an out-of-network provider, so they're expensive. If they took my insurance, I'd do my physical therapy there in a heartbeat. read more

Buyer beware, be a good consumer: All I can share is my personal experience. I chose to go to Virginia Spine for a spinal surgery even though they were out of network. The team at VA Spine said they understood the challenges of choosing an "out of network" provider and that they would work to provide the best care possible at a reasonable price. They required I pay a pre-surgery "good faith deposit" of 30% of the anticipated "allowable billable expense" of my insurer. The "allowable billable expense" defined by my insurer came in at a fraction of what VA Spine "anticipated" and I was responsible for the balance. After the fact, even the billing director admitted that my insurer typically comes in low and that she wasn't surprised. My problem was they didn't tell me this prior to surgery, even though they knew I was concerned about cost. VA Spine was well aware what my insurer would pay. The number they gave me was way different from the actual and I ultimately paid about 70% of the cost of surgery. I have no complaint about the quality of medical care I received. But I would call their business practice "deceptive" at the very least. read more

I had been fighting spine pain for many years. It go to the point that many of the things I enjoyed were too painful to do. Just walking a block left me aching. I had tried several steps which were more conservative than surgery and they made little difference. Finally, I went to the VSI where Dr. Haines and his team diagnosed the problems. While doing so they made me feel very welcome and took the time to explain the situation and answer all my questions. The surgery would include separating three vertebrae and using screws and rods to keep them stable. The first two weeks after the surgery were miserable but VSI provided on-call support during the entire time which I used a couple to times just to verify I was on-track... which I was. After that I gradually got better. It has been over three months and I am able to do everything without pain. I recently had my 3 month post-op visit and I "graduated". The outcome is better than I imagined and VSI has been supportive throughout. Thank you Dr. Haines and your team for giving my quality of life such a boost. read more

This is the only place to consider if you have back pain, spinal issues. I went there for a second opinion and it was the best decision I could have made. Dr. Hasz was great at further diagnosing my lower back pain. Dr. Bharara was outright excellent and has developed a non-surgical treatment plan to help me get back to normal. He inspired confidence and I feel like I am in excellent hands. It is worth the wait to see Dr. Bharara as a new patient because the time he will invest in studying your images and truly listening is amazing. I ended up having a stem cell procedure at L4/L5/S1 with Dr. Good who is probably the best surgeon at VSI. Dr. Bharara did the follow up pain management following the procedure. But I must say, Dr. Bharara is one in a million - he truly cares about his patients, has the best bedside manner that could possibly exist and actually is a fantastic diagnostician even though he is not a surgeon. He also does Stem cell procedures and sometimes I wish I had him do it. Either way, they all consult with one another - the staff is amazing all around. I had consulted with spine specialists all over northern Virginia and I couldn't beat the analysis and treatment plans that VSI had for me. I avoided a fusion of two disks at the age of 41 because of them. Stem cells are not covered by insurance unfortunately - but the out of pocket expenses from a surgery would have ended up costing the same anyway or more. read more
