I am writing this update because it seems this Vons is taking customer service more seriously. The checkers I've had lately are more attentive. OnTwo separate occasions, they helped me at checkout this past month with an item I go strictly there for. Vons only carries this item. I hope this more caring attitude continues. read more

The selection in the organic and bulk produce and wine area are great plus the cashiers are wonderful but the service in the deli is gods awful! I made a lunchtime trip (we have 40 minutes for lunch breaks) at 1:30 and waited for almost 15 minutes with 4 employees behind the counter and 1 customer before us - WTH? Sad to say this isn't unusual - I won't be making any more lunchtime trips, too long and irritating. read more

I have been into this Von's a few times - it's not my regular store, but go there from time to time when I'm in Sylmar for business. What I've come to realize about my overall experience here - is that i prefer to drive 17 min. out of my way to the La Crescenta store. If I'm going to spend the same dollar for dollar amount in a store that is well-lit, well-stocked, fresh, and up to code - why do it in Sylmar where it doesn't, in any way, look or feel appealing? Hailey was amazing, she was the only employee who was personable and nice. The young lady at the flower station was dismissive and rude. I politely said excuse me and asked where the cards were that go inside the flowers and while drinking from her water bottle she pointed to her right and didn't even break her gaze to look at me. I understand it's Valentine's Day and busy yet in my experience working retail and also as a decent human being it is common courtesy to acknowledge a customer asking a question. I asked another woman for help because the flowers I picked out was missing a rose, she didn't even look at me or say anything but handed me another dozen and walked away. Again, I understand being busy yet it is extremely unprofessional to not even acknowledge a person talking to you and act as if I'm bothering you by asking a question. I really like their deli sandwiches, much different than subs or quiznos... In a good way. There is one table near the lotto ticket dispenser, so this is more of a to go deal. I love how this Vons is listed as a $$$ grocery store. I never thought about it, but I guess it can rip you off sometimes, hah! Anyway, it amazes me how this Vons has one thing that Ralphs doesn't have (and that Ralphs usually has everything I need)--golden creamers, AKA Yukon Gold potatoes. They are probably my favorite potatoes to use to make the best mashed potatoes EVUR. They're so good, I'm allowed by law to misspell words of my choice: Awsum. I had a really bad experiences today at the Deli, because i went to buy fried chicken and there wasn't alot so i ask if i could get the pieces amd the manager said no that she couldn't sale me the pieces because they didn't have enough of so i.aske her went was the next order coming she said in 30 minutes, but i can't sale ypu the one because thoes are order from other customers and then i told her then what can you sell me. Every time I come here there's always 1 or 2 checkout lanes open and each one has 10 or more customers in line. If this store is always busy, why not open another lane? Poorly managed. I try not to come here but sometimes I just have to bite the bullet. read more

I've shopped at this location for over 20 years. Over the past year I have increasingly become more hesitant to shop there. The crowds inside & in parking lot are annoying, which, ok. Means they are doing good business. So I dealt with that fine. But now it has passed the annoyance stage into frightened stage when you can't get into store without being accosted by scammers. In the 9 years I lived in Glendale I never shopped at Vons. I was always a Ralph's customer and would also frequent Vallarta, but never Vons. After numerous bad experiences with the Ralph's in Sylmar after I moved up here, I decided I would give the Vons a chance. Where the Ralph's on Glenoaks seriously lacks customer service, the Vons seems to have it in abundance. I seem to always get the same people when I go there, and they are always so pleasant and helpful. The cashier Gina especially. I know it isn't a big thing but them taking the second to look at the receipt that has my last name on it and then thanking me personally by name really adds a nice touch. There is much to be said for a store manager who saves the day but Jeff did just that for me today. I got flustered during my transaction with the cashier and forgot my "cash back" and went home in my Lyft. Not until I reviewed my receipt at home did I even remember the $20 that I left behind. I called the store and they had to audit the register and confirm that indeed the till was over by $20 and that was done promptly. I must admit the "Senior Hours" during this time is appreciated because it is a fact we need a little extra special handling we seniors, and a little extra consideration because not all of us are as swift as each other. We all have different needs some not visible. Jeff certainly saved the day and quickly found a resolution &and won my loyalty and retained a neighborhood customer. Thank you so much. I see quite a few negative reviews on this location and if your reading them to consider making a visit rest assured and take it from me, don't hesitate GO!! The team here at the Sylmar Vons is top notch. The produce man is great, the people in the deli friendly and they care, the meat man flies around with his rack watch out for him as he puts out his beautiful selections and the flower child in that department has the prettiest roses that will make your mate fall in love with you again. Crazy long lines. I have been coming here for years and live up the street but the mid management of this store is out of control. They definitely don't follow the 3's a crowd rule. There are 2 registers open with literally at least 12 people in each line.

Lines, Lines, Lines, no matter what time you shop the lines are ridiculous. Top it off there is no self check out probably because of the size but would help those lines. Always out of stuff for weeks and produce is limited. I sometimes drive out of the way to Ralph's because of selection. read more

Great experience at vons, I had my father with me who needed the electric cart and he almost crashed into the liquor a nice young lady named kassandra helped us out and helped us laugh about it. My Father was so embarrassed at first but very happy in the end. She then helped us load up water to our car. Give that girl a promotion her attention to customers needs is unmatched. Poor costumer service, I love buying flowers here because they are way healthy than any flower shop in the area. But beware shoppers do not come before 10am for the flower department. No1 could sell me a flimsy little vase because no1 had a clue of the price, let along a different arrangement that was so pretty but I couldn't take because again no1 had a clue of the price!!!. The poor baker had to come cut the flower for some reason. So in summary their flower department is just to window shop and nothing else before 10am. Thanks Vons! 9 pm is the worst time to come, but sometimes I have to pick up groceries after works. There's always a line with 7 or more and some of the cashiers have no sense of urgency even when they see more people getting in line. Either have more cashiers open another register or DON'T get too chatty if you see that the line is extremely long. read more

If I could rate this place a 0 star, I would. This the most unorthodox store I've experienced. The deli took me 20 min to make a basic turkey bacon sandwich. 20 min starting when the young girl, Andrea, took my order. The issue was there are 3 deli ppl and only two making sandwiches. The older woman says, while laughing, "oh I don't know what's going on here, it's a mess." The couple next to me just laughed because it was a disaster. No one was restocking items so one by one, the girl making the sandwich would leave then come back. Leave then come back. I wish I was exaggerating or making this stuff up. This market is like wandering into the Twilight Zone...or a horror movie set with a deli counter. It's dirty, dreary, and looks like time forgot it. I agree with one poster who said they need to give the place a facelift, but I don't know if Vons new overlords, Safeway will commit to that. Add to that, it seems the store management doesn't take much pride and that trickles down. As one poster said, this is the most reputable market in Sylmar, and that is frightening when you think about it. I have seen half eaten food on the shelves, or half drunk bottles of soda, water, etc. and again that rests with the leadership. Also, most stores make an effort to sweep and clean up daily. That doesn't seem to be the case here. And, yes, there are transients all over the place in the parking lot, and I saw one follow a lady into the store asking her for money. I'd not try my luck withdrawing money from the Chase ATM next door. I have never seen so many homeless or transients in an area outside of downtown LA. When I worked around here years ago, this Vons had one of the few remaining dispensing machines I'd seen with Homies figurines. Don't tell me I'm the only one who collects these. The other one I've found is on Fountain Ave at a mini mart behind the Scientology center in Hollywood. I was so excited when I got a chola and also the homie in the wheelchair. read more

I went in 3 days ago and bought large container of Suja juice. I took it home and took a drink of it and it tasted horrible. I looked at the date and it was 2 weeks expired, shame on me for not looking at the date but I trusted Vons. I came back today to return it for a new one and I was surprised to still see all them were expired, no one took them off the refrigerator shelf. Now there are 3 weeks expired. I have recently fallen in amore with vons/safeway. They just re-opened this store, so it is all pretty and vamped up. i heard this past saturday they had specials for their grand-opening, i didn't know chains still do that now a days. you'll notice the workers almost stalking you but that's just because the management has asked them to be very customer friendly. no more anonymous shopping trips with sex hair and yesterday's underwear here. make friends with the butcher and find out what's fresh. veggies are always up there too. don't forget to CHECK OUT THE SOUPS. im a soup kind of girl and they definitely do it right here - baked potato, broccoli and cheddar, jambalaya.... i've noticed that the soup made daily tends to taste a little yummier but the packaged delights are still the ones i take home. i recently had the steakhous chili - cubes of meat, beans, spicy sauce, i like it a little hot with tapatio, sriracha, or whatever else is on hand. I go to this Von's pretty much on a weekly basis since I love to cook but am also an epileptic so excluded from the roads and this grocery store is walking distance from me. I've chosen which employees I need to go to if I need help with something because service is extremely exclusive at that store. I actually saw one employee just walk away and not come back when she couldn't find what a customer was looking for. And I actually make sure to go out of my way to avoid one of the cashiers because he's so horribly rude. He's a taller skinnier bald man, who yelled at my mother once for bringing her miniature dog in after she was told she could. Ever since then he's been particularly rude to me and makes sure I notice it. I don't know if there's something wrong with him or if he's just kind of a jerk... Von's Market in Sylmar is a great market. The people who work there are outstanding folks. I have lived in Sylmar for 20 years and primarily shop at this market. In my 20 years of shopping there, night and day, I have never been shot, robbed, accosted, jumped, carjacked, raped, or victimized in any way that would be considered likely in a "ghetto area." Citi G. happened to be there on a day when there happened to be a robbery across the street. She sounds paranoid of a multicultural and multiracial working class neighborhood.
