I have been shopping there for over 10 years. They have recently reduced the number and variety of stocked items. Their deli employees are curt and impolite. Today there was one checker at 1:45 pm with over 15 people in line and the self checkout completely full. The manager/supervisor was standing by the self checkout looking. I asked if he could get more checkers, he said, "no, corporate won't give us more hours." There are 5 other stores nearby. Why go to Von's? Go to Sprouts, Ralph's, Lazy Acres, or Vons on Santa fe. Nice size Vons located in Solana Beach. They belong to the same group as Shaw's, which we shop at in Rhode Island, namely the Albertsons Grocery Store chain. In 2022 Kroger and Albertsons proposed a merger (they are the #1 and #2 grocery chains the country) which is still pending lawsuits and anti-monopoly concerns. This particular store had a lot of sale items and we were able to grab their weekly flyer right as we walked in. Their pharmacy and health & beauty section are not too large, but they carry many of the basic national brands as well as their Signature private labels. The Solana Beach Vons... where you will wait longer to check out than it took you to shop. You're more likely to find only 1 checkout lane open here than 3, and lines back up into the store isles. It's been this way since COVID. I don't know whether a lack of available workforce or the employee budget is to blame but there's always a lack of check out lanes open here. read more

Nice, clean, friendly-enough staff. Vons/Safeway/Albertsons companies are pretty standardized across the board so no surprises with selection of products or hot food/deli area. One difference and bright point is that their fresh sushi bar area is good, for grocery store, sushi. The two sushi chefs are normally making it fresh pretty much all day and as soon as they serve it up, it's sold quickly. Though I'm told the sushi is a separate company from Vons. read more

Check expiration dates! unfortunately this is my closest grocery store I frequently find expired items. I won't even bother getting meat on sale anymore it has smelled off to many times. The meat they do have is the absolute worst cut and quality and its overpriced. I think they don't keep things cold enough. Yogurts often look mealy and mishandled. Frozen food sometimes seems thawed and refrozen. The produce is mediocre and limited in selection very little organic. This location is always sold out of things I tend to want to buy and is way overpriced. Vons Lomas Santa Fe seems to be turning into a place to buy booze there is now multiple aisles dedicated to booze and wine but hardly any craft beers. The older guy in the deli seems so grumpy to stop the loads of work they give him by himself to sell me something behind the counter I can only surmise it is a miserable place to work. The pharmacy ,the fresh french bread and parking availability are decent. The app is such an inconvenience to have to use to get the good deals anymore. read more

This is a much bigger Vons than many others and it's super easy to get what I need and move along because it's right near the I-5 onramps. Much better than average produce selection and nice people made for good shopping experiences. It is better than my local one. read more

Hi!- I rarely ever write Yelp reviews, but I felt like I should write one now because of how wonderful one of the Vons employees was tonight! In fact, I ended up calling the Solona Beach Vons location after I left- just because I wanted to catch the worker's name! So, Malorie (!) was a delightful employee. She was working at the register, and the customer in front of myself in line was being very difficult. Throughout the entire situation, Malorie remained so patient, kind, and helpful! I purchased four yasso yogurt bars and they didn't ring up correctly. The lady at the self checkout checked and told me that the tag was a mistake. She gave me one box at a discount rate instead of the four for $4.99 each that was advertised. I would suggest that Vons should honor their posted price which was to buy four at $4.99 each. Other stores sell them much cheaper, so it wasn't that good of a deal anyway. read more

I have to give this store a three because of current Store Management. or the lack of true management at the Store Manager Lever. I watched her walk away from a customer and handed the problem of to a worker. not the way I work on problems. it was a big 5 star just about 4 years ago. The staff is to be commended for dealing with this on a daily basis. Margarita in the Deli and (flower shop sometime) is outstanding. always happy and works hard. I won't be returning to this Vons! My husband and I were coming home from a day trip on Nov 11 and stopped here instead of our usual Vons. At first it looked like a great location. Super clean and spacious. I went to the restroom before we shopped since we had been in so much traffic coming down from Orange County. There was either glass or plastic shattered all over the floor of the bathroom so I went to go find someone to alert them. People sue so easily these days, and I wanted Vons to have the chance to clean it up immediately. I couldn't find anyone who wasn't busy with a customer so I walked back to the meat counter where my husband was. I told the employee and asked him to call someone. Even though there were no other customers for him to help, he looked at me square in the eye and said, "I cannot do that." Really?! There is no possible way for you to alert someone at the front of the store that there is a problem? So we looked for someone else and saw someone stocking the shelves. I told him and he said, "Okay, I guess I have to go deal with that." He was obviously super annoyed and didn't thank us or apologize--he just walked away in a huff. The Vons was nicely laid out, which earned it one star. The other star was earned by the guy from the hot deli section. He should train all the other employees because he was actually helpful, kind, and efficient. I know things are still weird from COVID, and I hate giving bad reviews, but this was just unacceptable. DON'T drop off FedEx packages here! Major failure. Dropped off Wednesday, June 1, at 2:43, info sent to FedEx at 3:28 p.m. June 1, so assumed all was good. Package must have been misplaced inside the store because it wasn't picked up until 3:44 p.m. two days later, today, Friday, June 3. Our delivery needed to arrive Friday, June 3, so the recipient had important papers for leaving on a trip June 5. The papers won't arrive until June 6 after the recipient had left the country, without his papers. Very damaging failure. UPDATE JUNE 4 -- My wife stopped by there today. Manager admitted that the package was put in the wrong place. Not discovered for one day! And she was rude. Said we need to check that it was put in the right place when we dropped off the package! I was duped into buying an $85.00 orchid which started losing flowers the second I put it in the car. I have owned many orchids over the years and thought I could save it. After one month it had dropped all but one flower and one of the two stems was completely dead. If you know orchids, that is not normal. I tried to return it with the tags I had and Rosa would not allow me to because she said the tags showed it was 2 months old. I owned it for one month, so it was sitting there for one. DOES VONS HAVE A STATED GUARANTEE ON PLANTS??? Home Depot does. NO WHERE does it state it's policy on plants. Yet, they create this VERY expensive plant that dies right away and don't take responsibility. This place is over crowded, never has enough cashiers, the workers are weak and they price gauge!!! read more

This used to be our favorite Vons when we lived in Del Mar twenty years ago. When we shopped here this week for Fab Friday, the store and service were a large disappointment. Yes, we did get the items we wanted. But the store is low-lit and badly in need of a major renovation/remodel. There were long lines at the check-outs with less than half of the lanes open around 5:00pm. And for the first time in over a year, I encountered a cashier who had trouble handling a Vons eGift card ... and her name tag indicated that she was a front-end manager. read more

While I am not typically at Vons weekly for groceries, this location is close to my job. Therefore, I find myself shopping here frequently for creamer, tea, food, or anything I may need for work. The prices are usually slightly higher than other grocery stores, but there is almost always a deal on any store brand products. While eight in the morning is still early, Vons is usually busy with customers at this time. Unfortunately, the number of shoppers isn't ever adequately met with employees. One (a single) register is open in the morning. The line is always ridiculously long, which is frustrating when you only have a handful of items. Furthermore, self-checkout is always disabled and usually will only have one available self-service register at this time. I like the convenience of stopping at Vons in the morning before work and the parking lot is a lot less congested than other shopping centers on Lomas Santa Fe, however the delay in service is an expected disappointment while shopping here. read more

This is a nice store. They have the all the foods needed for everyday life. The people in the store offer good service, when asked. I must say, the pharmacy area, however, does not have most of the products needed for personal hygiene, at least the products I prefer. And the makeup section is woeful. The store's footprint is small, and it feels cramped at times. That is not Vons' fault, they occupy the space that is given them. The store on Del Mar Heights Rd is even more cramped. I went to the deli at 7:45 Monday evening 3/14/22, the man behind the counter made eye contact with me but never acknowledged me. He was stocking or doing inventory with another employee, a woman, so maybe they figured selling products wasn't a part of their job description. When I was not greeted the first time I went back again, same lack of awareness by both employees. Needless to say this is unacceptable, rude and demonstrates a lack of concern for increasing sales. I drive from La Jolla to this location for the meat and seafood department. Their presentation/cases are always clean and well stocked. Even with dealing with the Covid-19, this store remains dedicated to providing the best. The salmon and the ahi are always beautiful and if it's not suitable, they will not put it out. Susan at the Solana Beach store went above and beyond with her customer service for me. I walked in and was greeted with a smile and "How can I help you". I was picking 3 cases of Austin Hope wine ( 30% off saved $700 ) and Susan took me back to the wine area and introduced me to Kara the wine expert. Both Kara and Susan made me feel very special. Brooke in the flower department was amazing. I was attending a funeral nearby in which the mortuary forgot flowers for the altar. (Total fail.) I swung by this Vons and in less than 15 minutes Brooke had picked me out some great flowers and put together an awesome, professional arrangement. wish I could say nice things about this location but I can't. I've bought meat from the butcher that was pink on the outside and brown on the inside, I've bought meat from the butcher that went bad the next day. The produce at this location is also poorly circulated and often goes bad quickly. I bought a piece of sheet cake today and it was stale. Before I buy anything I check the packaged date or the expiration and often it's expired and about to expire because they don't rotate the prepared foods. The staff seems overworked and miserable and it's shows in the quality of the items being presented for customers to purchase. Solana Beach is a nice area and the prices reflect that but unfortunately the quality doesn't. Don't waste your money and go someplace else. read more

Review from 11/30/2014: I've been shopping at this Vons regularly for the past 5 years - since I moved to Solana Beach. It's very convenient and overall my experience has been good - up until a few months ago. Since the summer I've noticed the store is short-staffed. Checkout lines can be long, and it can be difficult to find help when you need it. Sometimes I use the self checkout, but that doesn't always go so well for me, so I try to avoid it. More concerning though is the declining quality of some perishable food. I often find expired items in the cases. Last week I removed at least 15 expired packages of Primo Taglio Black Forest Ham from the deli case and gave them to the deli staff. The dates were several weeks old, so clearly their staff isn't doing a critical part of their job. Items this expired should never be out. I have also seen plenty of expired dairy in cases. Produce sometimes doesn't look very fresh or is badly bruised, and much of the produce I buy spoils in 2-3 days (yes, I checked my refrigerator - it's at 34 degrees). I'm inclined to do most of my grocery shopping elsewhere at this point. Vons was acquired by Albertsons shortly before I noticed this decline. I can't say there is any connection, but I've never been impressed with the quality or selection at Albertsons stores. If you shop at this Vons store, make sure you closely inspect what you are buying! Thanks for reading. Updated review 2/29/2020: I'm downgrading my review to 1 star. In the 5+ years since my last review this Vons has declined even more. Staffing issues persist. The expired food issues have gotten worse. Complaining several times to store management hasn't helped. We've brought home items such as canned goods, peanut butter, and pasta that are expired. We often find items in the refrigerator cases that aren't expired, but not cold - which means it sat around at room temperature for a while. We often see unwanted refrigerated items at the registers - which won't get re-shelved until who knows when. We sometimes see refrigerated items that weren't expired and were cold to the touch - and were moldy. We consider ALL food at this Vons to be suspect, and advise the following: Check expiration dates for ALL items. ALWAYS grab from the BACK rows in the refrigerated case (staff will put go-backs in the front row). Do a feel test for ALL refrigerated/frozen items. Do a close visual inspection of everything. There isn't another major grocery chain nearby. The closest alternatives are specialty grocery retailers with very high prices and/or limited selection. The closest one-stop grocery alternatives are located in Encinitas. Lack of direct competition may be part of the problem with this Vons. read more

This is for the self check out only. A great big sarcastic thanks to the lazy rude employee who grudgingly made her way to me after my machine was giving me problems. She then told me to take my purchase to an actual checker since I had a few coupons and it was going to "take her too long". I asked her to just void the sale items and I'll pay for my current items. I paid and my receipt was jammed and all I spent was a dollar and o had received my change so I proceeded to leave and she screams at me "don't touch that" talking about my purchase. She needs to work on her attitude and customer service there's better ways to handle a situation Update I was in tonight 1/7/2018 around 6 pm and I had another encounter with the same woman her name is Valerie. She was bagging for the only register open. ( I work at a grocery so I know Sunday nights from 6-8 can get pretty busy) and the when the line wraps around to self checkout she finally opens up and says she will take the next person in line I unload all my stuff and she rudely says this is express as if I'm going to take everything and put it back in my cart I apologized and she kept mentioning it. Being that I live across the street from the SB location I tend to shop here. I have purchased multiple beef items that were spoiled even when they're in the "use by" date. I check the meats for a brownish color which indicates that it is spoiled. Once I bought ground beef, it was within the use by date & it appeared to be ok, when I opened it the meat was brown in the inside. I have purchased spoiled milk that was still within the use by date. I constantly find items in the dairy section out of date behind newer products, usually yogurts & milk. They lack training & or someone is just plain lazy. Today I was going to speak to the manager, but I decided why bother it won't do any good. I am done shopping here & will be returning to Ralph's & or Sprouts. Check all the dates before purchasing everything in this store! read more

I live in the immediate area and will occasionally go to this Vons as a convenience. I really enjoy the late night quiet time and the check out person Bleu, she is so pleasant and helpful. My last visit to the bakery was met with a ruder older lady that didn't know what the word 'inscription' meant, as in something to write on a cake and personalize it smh. How do people get through their lives/day with such sh*t attitudes and YOU chose to work in service??
