Salmon Pannini, Fries, and Sweet Tea.

The food was just okay. I ordered a salmon pannini. I was expecting a patty but the ball was fine. However, the sauce was missing so it was dry. The fries were fries. The sweet tea was mid. The service was good. The ambiance was pleasant. I will go there again and try another dish.

The after church crowd was here on Sunday and I completely understand why. The food was every thing it needed to be & then some. I ordered the shrimp & grits with a side of eggs. They serve breakfast all day and have a vegan menu. The restaurant is connected to an apartment building so be careful not to pass when looking for it. It has a black & white striped triangular umbrella hovering over it. The staff were kind and the atmosphere was extremely down to earth, but not ghetto. This is a great mom & pop shop that you should fed check out. Be sure to try a flavored lemonade or iced tea. They are tall and one was more than enough. I didn't notice any ASL speaking staff, it wasn't needed, but there is space for wheelchairs. There is also street parking so be mindful. Only downside, our table wasn't exactly clean when sat down, but it was obvious they were busy. Overall, this is a great place for brunch or Sunday takeout dinner.

Mt Brother and I visited this black owned establishment for the first time and was not disappointed. The workers were very kind. They greeted and sat us instantly. Very nice place and also very clean. We ordered the fried chicken wings appetizer and I got the whitings platter sided with green beans and Mac & Cheese. I also got an "Uptown". In other words, an Arnold Palmer that was really tasty. The food was very good. Literally no complaints. The pricing on the menu is very reasonable. What I loved is this establishment offers a true "Soul Food" experience. I plan to return again soon and I suggest you try it out if you haven't already. Thank you for a nice experience to the people of Vondas Kitchen.

Service was good...Just wish our server spoke up louder so we can hear her.. Black owned establishment.. Sweet tea isn't good at all, Nothing sweet about it, the strawberry lemonade is pretty good... The catfish and grits was good as well, fresh, hot, flavor and big portions.. Overall good place for breakfast and I will be back..

First and foremost super busy. Small homey feeling type of place. You can tell my the customers that it's the type of place that has regulars. Came in for some breakfast to go. Have the French toast with fruit on it. Delicious. The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 was because I don't think I go the full experience getting my food to go.

Absolutely delicious for breakfast /brunch. I highly recommend the waffle topped with peach cobbler topping, the spicy chicken hash, and the Parmesan grits!

01/30/2021 I'm gonna make this short & sweet for you. Although my order took longer than anticipated, the food is still good, the potion size is great and the price is appropriate. The only downfall on this trip is that it taste as though someone changed the recipe for the grits. These aren't the grits that I remembered, loved & came for, they were just regular grits, but that's what you get when you can cook , but don't. I'm full so now I must go & take a nap. Chao.

Breakfast meal: Catfish, eggs, Parmesan grits, potatoes, fries.

Food was SO FRESH. Catfish was fried to perfection! First time here, will definitely be back. Customer service was great too.

Vonda's Kitchen is my go-to spot in Newark! Vonda is a friend and a great chef and businesswoman. I took my Mom and wife to Vonda's for Mother's Day Brunch. I enjoyed my favorite shrimp and grits. Mom had crabcakes and my wife had fried whiting. I highly recommend visiting Vonda's if you are looking for an awesome, authentic soul food meal!

The best! I've had in awhile the fish was seasoned well and grits were good. I should have asked for soft eggs but, that's it. Everything was amazing!!

Vonda's Kitchen is loved and adored in the community. After Eleven Clinton closed, this because my Soul Food fix in Newark. Smothered Turkey Wings, Beef Short Ribs, Candied Yams, Oxtails. .. you'll find all the Southern classics here. The consistency isn't always there, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I've never had a bad meal, but I suspect the cooks do their own thing. No measuring cups or strict adherence to recipes. The Cornbread is really popular. It's almost like cake. .. light in texture and sweet. My favorite dish is the Smothered Turkey. The gravy and sides are perfect for a stick to your ribs kind of meal. Sundays are jammed packed so get there early or plan to wait. There's not much in the area to help pass the time. I strongly recommend supporting this Woman Owned Small Business the next time you're in Newark.

Has fire damage been corrected and Restuarant reopened?

I was there last Saturday (July 27th) and was not aware of any fire damage; my first time there. It was open but the awnings were being replaced.

How is the surrounding area. It's it safe to walk through?

Honestly its not the best neighborhood in the world, but its not the worst. Its directly across the street from an elementary school, down the street from a Church in one direction and a Masjid in another direction. I use to work around the corner…

And the award for The Best Fried Shrimp goes to..... "Soul…read moreFood Chess House!!!!" I've said it before and I'll say it again, sometimes the best cooked food is in "The Hood" and that rings oh so true with Soul Food Chess House. You won't get Maitre D Service here, but what you will get is the best the darn Fried Fish & Shrimp outside of Chateau A La Cheryl (that's my house, lol). I've come here so many times and have tried the fried whiting, fried shrimp, chicken wings, collard greens, Mac & cheese, potato salad and cabbage. What I can say about Soul Food Chess house that keeps me coming back is the consistency of the Shrimp. No matter what day of the week or hour of the day, the shrimp is always consistent. Whenever I have a taste for fried shrimp I have my go-to spots that I frequent, but they have all proven to be hit or miss at times; but with Soul Food Chess House they never disappoint. Now let's talk about the Fried Whiting. They cooked it with just the right amount of crispness & just the right amount of crunch, I love it, although they were a little heavy handed with the salt, it was honestly the best Fried Fish of any of the Soul Food Spots in NJ that I have tried. Though the potato salad is good, it's not great, but has potential to greatness! The reason it lacks greatness is because they're missing the eggs, potato salad without the eggs is what I call a shortcut; while taking a shortcut is good, it doesn't make for greatness, however, Soul Food Chess House does make pretty good potato salad overall , add those eggs and greatness will have been achieved. So until then I'll keep them at 4 stars. But the Shrimp gets 5 Stars hands down!
