Julian Graves is a small shop with a very specific selection: dried fruit and nuts in bags. Every…read morekind you can think of is offered plain or coated in chocolate, yogurt or sugar. Sizes range from teeny 39p bags to the impressive 2kg sack of chocolate covered brazil nuts. A large table down the centre of the shop is for sale items - Actually, the sale hadn't started when I was in yesterday, and the shopkeeper advised a woman buying some yogurt covered raisins that they'd be on half-price the next day, if she wanted to wait. Now that's service. There actually were a few bags of hard to find grains and legumes - I noticed quinoa, for example - and a small shelf or two of healthy snacks like granola and oatmeal bars. But mostly - fruits and nuts and thoughtful service.

These health food shops, or should I say snack shops, seem to have popped up everywhere in the last…read morefew years (probably thanks to Gillian McKeith), with Julian Graves being one of my favourites. Even if you sit on your backside all day and exercise just once a month (to the shops on a Saturday) you can give yourself am instant moral boost by walking around this shop and purchasing several packets of dried fruit, pretzels and nuts in the hope that it'll replace the cakes and biscuits. Unfortunately, at least for me, it's a rather false economy as the packets are so large you end up gorging 500 grams before you know it. Still, they do have an amazing range at very cheap prices. Pistachios and dates are amongst my favourites but I have been known to buy a kilo of liquorice allsorts from time to time..

Richardson Road is already a great area for buying from small local businesses. Home to a fantastic…read morebutcher, fishmonger, bakery, wine shop, flower shop and cafe it's a great place to pick up local produce without heading into town. In addition, I recently discovered a new organic grocers has opened up making this an even more inspiring spot. Gratitude Grocers has a wonderful display of fruit and veg out the front which immediately draws the eye. Pick up a lovely old fashioned wicker basket and start shopping! Great quality fresh local produce is hard to resist. I brought some leeks and potatoes to make a soup, and some wonderfully large, juicy plums. Inside, the great produce continues. Freshly baked bread from Flint Owl Bakery, locally produced sausages and bacon, dairy produce, local honey, vegan goods and homemade falafel are among some of the delights available. I would definitely recommend the falafel - I ate mine in the car before I even drove off! Downstairs, there is apparently a great selection of organic produce such as shampoo and cleaning products, I didn't make it down this time as I was with my little one in the pram, but will defiantly return to check it out. Organic stores are often ridiculously over priced but I didn't think this was the case here. On top of all this, the proprietor was so friendly and chatty I left feeling like I had made a new friend! Shopping experiences like this are hard to come by so I wish this small business every success. The owner mentioned the possibility of opening a store in my local area, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this happens one day.
