Jasmines Health Food Store is a great shop to add to the list of healthy boutique grocers in the Seven Dials area. Carrying a wide array of fruits, veggies, dry goods and snacks, this is a local favorite for just popping in and getting whatever it is that you crave. With an impressive selection of organic, local and fair trade goodies, it makes it very hard to decide whether or not to get the rice cakes with quinoa or the free trade dried mangos from Uganda. If you're not into shopping at monster grocery stores, then Jasmine is a great alternative to endlessly searching out aisles for your favorite health food snack or skipping the fruit that has been shipped in from over seas. BUY LOCAL!

I much prefer to spend a little more money and have someone who actually knows their industry too. Its mainly all organic, seasonal produce and you can really tell the difference from the packaged stuff. The water melons are absolutely fantastic and so juicy as are the pineapples. Try and get there when the Jersey Royal potatoes are in season! They have an array of herbs and spices indoors too and occasionally stock some very in expensive saffron!

Julian Graves is a small shop with a very specific selection: dried fruit and nuts in bags. Every…read morekind you can think of is offered plain or coated in chocolate, yogurt or sugar. Sizes range from teeny 39p bags to the impressive 2kg sack of chocolate covered brazil nuts. A large table down the centre of the shop is for sale items - Actually, the sale hadn't started when I was in yesterday, and the shopkeeper advised a woman buying some yogurt covered raisins that they'd be on half-price the next day, if she wanted to wait. Now that's service. There actually were a few bags of hard to find grains and legumes - I noticed quinoa, for example - and a small shelf or two of healthy snacks like granola and oatmeal bars. But mostly - fruits and nuts and thoughtful service.

Even if you sit on your backside all day and exercise just once a month (to the shops on a Saturday) you can give yourself am instant moral boost by walking around this shop and purchasing several packets of dried fruit, pretzels and nuts in the hope that it'll replace the cakes and biscuits. Unfortunately, at least for me, it's a rather false economy as the packets are so large you end up gorging 500 grams before you know it. Still, they do have an amazing range at very cheap prices. Pistachios and dates are amongst my favourites but I have been known to buy a kilo of liquorice allsorts from time to time..

Typical wholefoods fare is available; organic and eco-friendly variants of standard supermarket items, from washing-up liquids to ready made pies, produced by the poetically named company 'Clive's Pies', which, it must be said, are hearty and delicious. Obviously, a range of dried fruits, nuts, pulses and seeds can be had, as well as soya and rice based dairy alternatives, tofu and and a vast array of juices and sauces. What makes Sunny Foods stand out in the wholefoods market is that, impressively for a relatively small shop with limited space, they have a strong emphasis on their grocery section. Heaps of locally farmed produce, all fresh and in good nick, and some rarities including Italian Cavolo Nero- a delicious dark cabbage which you can use in place of Kale- and various seasonal fruits altogether take up about a quarter of the shop's floor-space. Anyone looking to eat well, or expand their cooking repertoire would be well served to pay Sunny Foods a visit. However, the staff have never been particularly friendly or helpful, which isn't the worst thing in the world, but when you name your shop 'Sunny', you're really setting yourself up for criticism if your disposition doesn't match your projected image. Also, and, in fact, more importantly, the prices in here can feel almost overbearingly high. We have to make allowances for small local businesses, and understand that it's hard for them to compete with bulk-buying chains, but there are many items in Sunny Foods which you could find for less in Pulse, which is an even smaller establishment in the Open Market, so prepare yourself if you're a bit light of wallet.
