So, Brill Eye Center…read more.. I was a customer off and on for a number of years. The off part was because I was unemployed for a bit and didn't have vision insurance, but when I was working this was my place. I liked that the clinic offered Saturday morning hours and thought the doctor did a thorough job performing his eye exams. Now, some of the tests he performed weren't covered by my insurance and I didn't know this until I went to pay, but for the most part those tests weren't super expensive and I thought they were good tests to have. So, what happened? One of the employees lost it, that's what happened. I called in to get a copy of my prescription because I used all of this year's insurance money on new frames and lenses, but I needed contact lenses. I normally bought them through the eye center however it was less expensive to go through an online retailer until my insurance year flipped and I could use those funds here. Apparently to get a copy of your prescription you need a contact lense prescription, not just a regular prescription and I had "declined" my option to get this test. I was never offered this test. I'd been a customer for years and never heard of this test. I had previously talked to the doctor about my contact lenses, but didn't know there was a separate test because it had never been offered. Anyway, while trying to figure out what the woman I was speaking with was talking about our conversation went to civil, to strained to her screaming at me over the phone. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. Nope. I did end up talking to Dr. Brill after this and while our conversation was mostly civil, I will maintain that I was never told about or offered a contact lense eye test and I also felt like I was being mocked a bit for wanting to get contact lenses at a less expensive option than this office. He also blamed the behavior of the woman I spoke with on her being a millenial, which honestly didn't sit well with me. I do think for the most part this is good office and Dr. Brill is a good doctor however I work really hard for my benefits and I am not going to spend my money at a place that treats me this way. If you're looking at this office, please do your research. Ask up front whether all of the tests are covered by your insurance and don't you dare let them disrespect you while you're doing it.

My only concern are some of the younger staff that help at the front desk are not as professional but many of them don't stick around for long. I would highly recommend going there. They have good frames for glasses but if you are on a budget maybe get the frames but get the lenses else where. If you are not as concerned for a budget or don't get your lenses changed as often I say splurge and just get it all done there.

Many of the frames are hip and trendy, but you can also find a more conservative look there if you want. The young man at the Prairie Village location was knowledgeable and very nice, and I had a generally good experience there. My big beef about these shops is their design. The closest you can get to a big mirror is about six to eight feet because they are all behind the counters. I want to see myself in a big, well-lit mirror from a variety of distances and angles. They also have small mirrors on the counter tops, but that is really not that helpful because we don't view the world through a 9 x 12 inch oval. I am both near and far sighted, so I had a hard time getting a good view of myself in the big mirrors that were so far away. Maybe I'm the only one who thinks about eyeglass shopping this way, but it's something I've noticed recently. I've been obsessively shopping for new frames because I really want to change my look. I've been to dozens of shops in the KC metro and even Lawrence. I'm amazed at how many shops have small, poorly lit and/or inaccessible mirrors. If I'm going to spend $500 to $1200 on new lenses and frames that I will wear on my face every day, I sure as heck want to be able to see myself clearly before making a decision.

I originally had gone to my previous optometrists office however based on the price they quoted per pair $600 for lenses only it was clear based on the sales associates indifference they weren't really interested in my business. I removed their Yelp review because I could no longer stand behind the level of customer service. Enter Fairway Eye center. Some years ago I had done business with Fairway and remembered the excellent customer service. In fact the only reason I really switched was they didn't have the frames I wanted. I digress. So after getting a completely outrageous quote I called Fairway and asked for Tina. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out she was still there. I explained my dilemma and all I can say is that Fairway came to the rescue once again. The prices were completely reasonable and Fairway stands 100% behind their product and customer service. I won't be going to anyplace else again. The customer service can't be beat!

Seriously, if it's not written down it didn't happen. I called to check the status of my contact and was told "You're in a wait status" and that they should have already been received. I asked if I had to go to the office or will the contacts be delivered to my home, the gentleman said "oh you should have been given the choice at the time of the order if you wanted them mailed to your...and of course I was not given that or any other option. In short, not a happy camper!!!!! I would have given a 2.5, but the Dr. and techs were nice and proficient for the most part, one of the techs seemed new and struggled through the screening.

My experience at Optical Innovations has been perhaps the worst example of customer service I've…read moreever received. And I don't write these reviews lightly. I am a repeat customer, and after buying my second pair of glasses, bringing my total expenditure at Optical Innovations to $1,000 in the space of about 4 months, I wanted to return a pair of frames that were so uncomfortable I truly couldn't wear them. The retail price of the frames was $75, and, as you might imagine, that probably represented an investment of about $35 (or less) for Optical Innovations. They finally agreed to "break" their policy and accept a return after 30 days of thinking about it. This process required three phone calls on my part and one trip to the store to actually give in, pick up the frames, and keep them myself - which offer they refused. Then, they told me, repeatedly, that they mailed me a check representing a refund. After six weeks went by without receiving the check (by the way, they are about 10 blocks from my house), and multiple phone calls, I again wanted to just pick up the frames and move on. They refused to allow me to do that, and in fact, hung up on me when I called. Imagine my surprise to receive, finally, a week ago, a check representing payment for the returned item. Which, by the way, I'm pretty confident they sold to someone else, which is why they wouldn't (and couldn't) give it to me when I asked for the glasses back. For me, this wasn't about the money - it was about a horrifying example of a complete and total lack of customer service. For a sum of $35 or less, they were perfectly willing to ruin any chances of an ongoing relationship (and I buy glasses, often, as does every member of my family). They lied, then lied some more. Then hung up on me when I called -- and finally -- when I was almost beyond caring, capitulated and send me a refund. In this instance, everyone is a loser. I lost the ridiculous amount of time and energy that dealing with them - over this trivial issue - required of me. And they lost all credibility and the chance to ever serve me again, in any capacity. Sadly, as I began to ask around after receiving this kind of treatment at Optical Innovations, many similar stories surfaced. In sum, my advice for those for whom great customer service is as important as great eyewear, that you avoid Optical Innovations at all costs.
