My selected seat had some leftover popcorn and the floor in front of my seat was not very clean. It was a weekend visit and there were many people watching movies but the bathrooms were not very clean and had overflowing trash. The good part was that the movie we watched was good.

When I watch movies here, my smart watch goes crazy with notifications that the sound is exceeding 80 and 90 decibels. Sounds above 85 decibels are harmful to your hearing. Gas lawn mowers are 85 decibels. Rock concerts are 90-120 decibels. Weekly limit at 90 decibels is 4 hours. Per week total, not per event. So a single 2 hour movie is half your weekly limit (to hopefully avoid permanent hearing loss, but not guaranteed it won't happen sooner) and 30 minutes/day causes temporary hearing loss. If the majority of film goers do not have permanent hearing loss, they will now! That's why I always bring 'Etymotic ER20XS ETY Earplugs' high fidelity, high definition earplugs with 20 dB sound reduction when I go to the movies and concerts. It's like a volume knob for your environment, turning everything down 20 dB equally across all frequencies. These are not foam earplugs which muddies the sound and blocks the highs. The lobby was very clean, bright and open. It included a bar and an arcade as well as some seating for those who were waiting for their movies. The snack selection was good, they were out of pretzels when we were there but got pop corn and one of the special character sodas. They also had gourmet popcorn, Cheeto and Oreo flavored. The seats were comfortable and reclined, the theaters had plenty of space so you aren't climbing over each other to get in and out of the rows. Additionally bathrooms were right near the theaters so running to the bathroom mid movie.

The theater is beautiful and even the lobby and restrooms are unique. All of the staff was helpful and friendly as well. It holds about 900 people, so I imagine it'd be great for a concert as well. I sat 10th row, center and had a perfect view of the screen. The sound was solid as well, but don't expect IMAX or anything like that. I'm glad I popped in. I don't know if I'll ever be in Portsmouth again but if I am, I'd happily stop in again for a show or film.

So it was exciting to have a recent and currently rare chance to return to the venue for the first time in at least 10 years, if not more. I do follow their social media programming in the interim and am pleased that the cinema has managed to soldier on through the more challenging recent years. The triplex layout was exactly the same as I remember, though it was a surprise that the bathrooms did not seem to have been updated. The more personal, less chain-like touch is evident throughout the space with handwritten film titles and a general welcome to linger vibe. The film I saw featured in the "screening room" which I had not visited before. Seating was OK with the look up at a slightly sharper angle than I would have liked. Sound and picture quality was excellent. The trailers before the film were individually cultivated (a welcome additional more "personal" touch) and highlighted upcoming one-off programming the cinema will be offering.
