I was at Summa today for my surgery follow up. I used to work for the GM of the food service restaurants at the hospital. The fine dining Virtues Restaurant used to be under our purview. I loved they always had a good selection of gluten-free desserts (chocolate mousse, cookies and more) and other entrées available gluten-free as well as a pizza with a gluten-free crust. Well, the quality and the options have definitely decreased. My pizza crust was mostly raw and they only had a gluten-free brownie to offer. Probably won't be coming back again. read more

I had looked at reviews since I had to go in for a fasting procedure. I knew I'd be famished by the time I was done. I HAD to try the eggplant soup because I love eggplant and it's something unique. Absolutely love this place. Dining does not feel like you're in a hospital. The eggplant soup is one of the best soups I've ever eaten.

It's a real treat to have an alternative to the hospital cafeteria food, especially one that delivers right to hospital suites. Virtues offers a wide variety of menu items with breakfast, lunch and dinner service. Everything I received was of good proportion and tasty. Loved the push for farm fresh local ingredients. The hospital room delivery service was great. They had meals up in 20 minutes. That's better than a lot of hotel room service. So if you or your loved ones are admitted to Akron City, this is a good alternative to the standard hospital fare. Oddly, they do not deliver breakfast, only lunch and dinner. So bribe a nurse or do a you fly I buy deal. It's on the pricier side, example being an $11 burger, but beats taking a car downtown to Crave or Luigi's for carryout. read more

This restaurant is hidden away on the second floor of Akron city hospital. You get to it off of Arch street. The hospital has valet parking and the restaurant will validate your ticket. The restaurant itself has changing specials weekly. Usually a pasta, a beef, chicken or pork, and a seafood. Just about everything I have had has been excellent. Open kitchen so you can watch the chefs at work. Very friendly staff and knowledgeable waiters. No alcohol at lunch and I think a two drink max at dinner. read more

Now that this place exists, future generations will be confused by all the jokes on TV shows about hospital food. No green jello or vending machine sandwiches at this joint. It's actually decent, locally sourced food plus liquor (after 4pm). There is free WiFi throughout the hospital and lots of windows (although not much of a view). The staff was friendly and attentive. Although it's nothing but Code Violet and GSW victims down in the ER, this wing has a mortgage officer and a Starbucks. It's amazing that a 2 minute walk can take you to another world. Lunch will run you about $11-15 which is in line with what you would pay at Crave or other local restaurants. You could spend up to $40 on dinner but there are also specials that could keep you down in the $15 range as well. Anywhere else, I might have only given 4 stars. As this is in a hospital, I assure you that this could have been 7 or 8 stars. read more

Worst food I've had in a long time. God bless the high school kids who (I wasn't aware of the amateur staff) prepared the meal, but it severely lacks skillful melding of flavors and textures. I ordered the grilled pork chop ....then the romaine salad after sending back the chop. Bland. Boring. I couldn't stomach either. Was at Akron City Hospital for an appointment in the afternoon. My hubby and I thought we would try Virtues since the receptionist at the dr. said it was good. Beautiful restaurant for being located in a hospital. Very clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. My hubby ordered a side salad and a cheeseburger. I ordered a fried chicken sandwich. My hubby loved the salad. Said the house dressing was excellent. I was going to take a picture of my hubby's burger but it was half eaten before I could get my phone out. It looked amazing and my hubby said it was. Also said it was one of the best burgers he has had in awhile. Wish I could have said the same thing about my chicken sandwich, but it was real grizzely and like chewey. I couldn't eat it. I told our server I wanted to try the pizza and she asked what was wrong with the sandwich, so I told her what I thought of it. It was removed from our bill and she brought me a personal pepperoni pizza. I absolutely loved the pizza. For me it had the perfect amount of cheese and the sauce was fresh and very good. It crust was nice and crisp. The pepperoni had the right amount of spice. Just an all over good pizza for me. (but next time I'm trying a cheeseburger). Getting and processing checks seems to take forever, so do yourself a favor and bring cash if at all possible. Neither of those are reasons to avoid this place, because the food is soooo good. Stopped here for a quick bite after a doctor's appointment. My mom and aunt split a cheeseburger and Caesar salad and I got half of the crabcake appetizer. Both were delicious but portions were small for the money. This plus two coffees cost $24. The appetizer was only one small crabcake. It was excellent, but I think of a half appetizer as being two and a whole as being four. It cost $7. I could have gotten an entire meal for $12. I don't think I'll be eating here again unless I have no choice. read more

Very disappointed with the management here. We had a party of 7 people 4 adults and 3 kids. The kids are age 11,13,13. We all ordered our meals, the kids ordered grilled cheese sandwiches from the kids menu. A few minutes later the manager came out and told us that our kids couldn't have the grilled cheese sandwich because they were too old to order from the kids menu. So we asked if they had an adult grilled cheese and they told us no. We asked if they could make an exception and she said no. We ended up leaving and going somewhere else. Our order would have been over $100 but the manager choose to not serve us. I think this place needs a manager who has common sense and can make a smart decision. read more

They have a breakfast buffet until 9:30am...and not a second more. They promptly pack it up at 9:30. No signs to announce closing time....and they don't care if you just sat down at 9:25. Gave the manager heck about this, she just laughed. It was cheap enough to dine in at $7. For some reason it is $9.xx if you take out. Their breakfast home fries were so greasy I felt sick the rest of the day. Two stars here is overly generous considering the bad attitude of management. This hospital restaurant should be packed with the public. Their trademark eggplant soup is just the best. I was there yesterday because of my husband being treated and had the most delicious chicken entree and dessert. What a treasure. Susan, our waitress, was just the best--fast, efficient, and so enthusiastic about the restaurant. I will return to dine even though there is nobody at the hospital! What a surprisingly good hospital restaurant! There is a cafeteria located at on the ground floor of Akron City Hospital; Virtues is a separate location in the hospital and functions like a real restaurant. The Pear and Arugula salad is amazing! Throw some protein on (an you have a choice: salmon, steak, chicken, and more!) and you have a meal that you would find a many high-end restaurants. There are some meeting spaces here as well, so you want to make sure you are not seated next to them or you will be subjected to the meeting content. Overall, it's a great place to eat if you are on the Summa Akron City campus. read more

Virtues brings a whole new meaning to hospital food. I heard about this place from a friend who raved about the place. This delicious gem is tucked inside the hospital on the 2nd floor off Arch St. So many good looking choices on the dinner menu it was hard to decide. We opted for an appetizer of fried calamari ($9) served with a side of diablo marinara. Portion size was very generous, batter was delicious and light with a bit of black pepper. Rosemary bread with olive oil was warm and tasty but a bit salty. We selected the Asian salad ($10)with more calamari served with a sweet chili sauce and an Asian inspired ginger dressing. Serving size was again generous and presentation pleasant to the eye. My salmon BLT sandwich ($14) had a choice of fries, salad or soup. I opted for the house speciality soup, cream of eggplant. It didn't disappoint. It was earthy, creamy, and reminded me of a homemade hearty mushroom. The salmon was cooked perfectly and came on a whole wheat bun with what I think was a cream cheese spread, and lettuce, tomato and slice of bacon. Most other entrees started at $15 and went up around $30. Specials for appetizers to entrees appear to change weekly. Only downside was finding the free parking lot and the sketchy guys that were there when we went to get the car. We might not have been in the right spot?? read more

Excellent "hospital food!" I was skeptical, but had a delicious steak, with delicious bread, and the best part was the eggplant soup! Our server was knowledgeable, friendly, and courteous (Mark, I believe)! Made it worth the somewhat expensive bill. read more

First the positives: Free parking and restaurant location were easy to find following the directions on the restaurant website. Our hostess and waitress were friendly, attentive and efficient. I told the waitress I was interested in the eggplant soup and she brought my wife and me a small sample. It was very creamy and we both thought it was good, although I did not taste eggplant. The field green salads were very fresh and the we both enjoyed the white french dressing. The focaccia bread was fresh from the oven and very good. My wife had the stuffed pepper risotta appetizer ($6), It was very creamy with a little heat from the peppers. The restaurant was clean and comfortable but not very upscale. The music was unobtrusive and we enjoyed the selections. The food was presented in an attractive manner. Now the negatives: I ordered the pan seared tuna appetizer ($11) It consisted of 3 small pieces of below average tuna on toasted crostini. It was very disappointing. My wife and I both ordered the 4 oz roasted garlic and goat's cheese filet, medium rare ($23). They were overdone, definitely not "melt in your mouth". The skewered vegetables were not well grilled, sort of tasteless. We both thought "hospital food". I don't think we will go back and I would not recommend the restaurant. read more

I went there last Thursday with my wife and her girlfriend. This was our third time there, the first two were impressive, that's why we went again. Something must have happened, wine are served in a glass that has food residue on it, dirty silverwares, no bread on table, when asked they said it's still in the oven, and when they brought it out, we can figure right away that it came from the oven alright(cold oven where they keep the leftover). The old chef probably left, replaced by short order cook lately, because pasta was undercooked and the meal is just not the same as before. They did not even validate the parking ticket anymore.
