Bottom line: ob/gyn Edward Wolanski came pretty highly recommended to me, with the one caveat that…read morehe has an unhealthy, critical view of weight gain during pregnancy. It turns out that's true. But it also seems to be true that for other criteria like a low-intervention approach to birth, he's the best ob/gyn in Charlottesville (by default - he seems to be the only low-intervention ob/gyn here!). So, you have to pick your poison. Or maybe enough women telling him we don't like his unnecessarily strict, critical stance could influence the way he relates to patients? One can dare to hope. Context: I moved to Charlottesville about two months ago and began asking for recommendations for a good ob/gyn. Edward Wolanski was a name that kept coming up. Friends and friends-of-friends recommended him because they said he tends to be low intervention - he serves as the back-up for a midwife, which is rare and usually indicates an appreciation for a natural approach to childbirth. The one nuance to all the glowing reviews was that he could be brusque and unnecessarily strict about weight, having once told a patient, "We don't want a chubby Christa!" (Except he used her name, of course.) I took this info with a grain of salt, but sure enough, during our consultation visit, one of the first things Wolanski brought up was his recommendation that pregnant women should only gain 20-25 pounds during a pregnancy: this goes against the medically recognized guideline of 25-35 pounds for women who, like me, are in a healthy weight range at the start of pregnancy. I questioned whether his adapted guidelines set up potentially harmful expectations for women who have struggled with eating disorders, and he actually responded, "I've had many patients who have dealt with anorexia, and they tend to do quite well during pregnancy because they watch what they eat." Uh, yeah, that's what anorexics do, but I think our definition of "doing quite well" are not the same. That's the bad news. The worse news is that Wolanski may still be the best (only??) ob/gyn in Charlottesville for women like me, who value a low-intervention approach to childbirth. In the past week, I've researched ob/gyns in Cville like it's my job, and while Martha Jefferson Hospital is more advanced in terms of holistic care of mama + baby, I have yet to find another ob/gyn practice that is recommended for being accepting of a more natural approach to childbirth. I'll update this if/when I do (and if you have recommendations - message me!!)

I feel as if I have done the "round robin" of area OB/GYNs. I have seen Dr. T, Jefferson OB, and…read moreWolanski. I was looking for a doctor who was willing to let me have a VBA2C. The only person was Wolanski. He is kind and straightforward and is fully committed to your well-being as well as that of your child. He is very into making sure you stay healthy and will encourage you to work out and to be careful about how you are eating during your pregnancy. Highly recommend.

I'd give 0/5 stars, if I could. My private medical information and experience has been disclosed…read morewithin the community by a non-medical family member of one of the providers here. No one had access to this information except for the medical health professionals at this practice (they are also affiliated with Martha Jefferson Hospital), so I have viable reason to believe HIPAA was violated by an employed provider here. It's a privilege to have a person's private medical information. Doctors and nurses are entitled to protect their patients, not cause severe and extensive emotional damage and suffering. Unfortunately, this goes beyond violating just my privacy, but also members of my immediate family. Truly a devastating and abhorrent situation with no acknowledgement or sympathy from the owner. I highly recommend avoiding these providers/practice at all costs.

I let her know my situation and she immediately sounds frustrated at me asking me things with a not needed emphasis. I tried to remain calm and explain to her that I needed to know if they have room for me in their practice before I asked my insurance to send any paperwork her way. She didn't like that. I've been trying to find a calm and open practice who can work with me and not against me and make me feel good to go to them. Unfortunately, with this call I had with the receptionist I am not going to go here. I really do not need the stress that this lady put me through the five minutes I was on the phone with her at every single appointment I have at this doctor's office. I really hope somebody talks to her because they might be losing more patients than just me.

I learned more from the first meeting than I did from all the many visits I had with other GYNs. He did my hysterectomy, Stage 3 endometriosis excision surgery with rectal nodule resection, endometrioma removal with ovary, and repair of umbilical hernia. I suffered for 15+ years with endometriosis that caused painful intercourse, painful bowel movements, stomach issues/bloating, heavy/painful periods and extreme fatigue from low iron levels that needed iron infusions. I highly recommend Dr. Barron for your gynecology issues and especially endometriosis. He really is the "endometriosis" expert and you don't just want a "regular" gynecologist operating on you! I am so glad I met with him because he gave me my life back and he can do the same for you! It doesn't even feel like I had endometriosis and it's been 6 months or even cycle pain! The front office, surgery coordinator (got me in quick to save me a ton of money since I had almost met my deductible) and medical assistants are very pleasant to interact with!

Dr Barron has let me talk about every little concern I have had and has great discussions with me in return, he really listened to me... I am truly amazed by the practices empathy and how kind they are. I can not thank them enough for everything they have done for me. Almost 1 week post op from endo excision and cyst removal and I have no complaints about my experience so far!

He is also a board certified obstetrician and delivered my son before he became his pediatrician. I have been a registered nurse at UVA for 5 years, and Dr. Campbell is absolutely the "go to" doctor for all health professionals...but also perfect for anybody who needs a gentle, non-judgmental, down to earth approach. Dr. Campbell is extremely empathetic, always takes my concerns very seriously, takes the time to answer all of my questions in depth...and always presents the most practical-yet-evidence based options. He has an equal respect for low intervention and the power of medicine, and will always be flexible when it comes to your personal views on medical care. His office staff is incredibly helpful and the nurses have always given wonderful medical direction over the phone. Surprisingly enough, we never have trouble getting an appointment the same day even though he and his nurse practitioner (who is also fabulous) are the only PCPs in the practice. The wait times are reasonable too, considering the small practice, and I have never minded waiting a few extra minutes because I know that he will never ever rush me when it's my turn to be seen. The only negative part about my experience with Dr. Campbell is that I would be devastated to have to move away from Charlottesville...because it means I would have to find another doctor...And nobody could ever replace him!
