Considering all that is going on in the world, it is easy for a small store with limited resources…read moreto either suspend their business, shorten their neighborhood reach, or worse, stop working altogether and close down, especially those businesses not considered "essential." Now whether or not you feel that stores selling beer and wine are deserving of such a label, these are places that at the very least allowing us to indulge in some adult beverages while we hunker down and wait this thing out. Some days I would say that these choices are essential, (the importance is directly proportional to the number of kids that you are trying to home-school from what I have read.) and there are still celebrations and birthdays and anniversaries that are not subject to Covid-19, even if they may be altered from what the original vision was. So on this #thankfulthursday, I wanted to recognize De Fles Winkel, a small and unassuming beer and wine shop in the Twin Hickory area, that continues to provide excellent customer service, a strong community visibility, and a willingness to get their product out quickly to those who are currently unable to get it themselves. Now of course some other places are delivering beer and wine, but The Wink, as it is affectionately named, has a very small staff and due to their size cannot be a volume buyer of these items, and in turn sell their product at a lower price without being hurt by this practice. Still, they keep their prices very (almost unbelievably) competitive and their helpfulness is at an all-time high in direct contrast to most of these stores. In fact, their response to the crisis has been nothing short of amazing, as they have delivered my items on the same day each time I have placed an order (not something easily found these days, even from the big-box stores). You want youor drinks delivered cold? Just ask them. So cheers to The Wink, and here's to all of the small neighborhood business, like them, who are showing strong resiliency and higher levels of strength in a time when we need it the most. I will remember this when we are on the other side of all of this madness, and will make sure they continue to receive my business. There's a good mix of local and non-local beers as well. I find it can be detrimental to focus TOO much on local beer. I also think they've nailed the size, both in terms of inventory and physical space, because product seems to move at an ideal pace. I've rarely come across too-old beer, which happens quite often in many beer shops. This is THE place to get beer in the area.

What a great decision! When you walk in, you immediately notice that all of the wines are beautifully displayed -- it doubles as a wine shop, which gives it such a warm and welcoming vibe. It feels cozy but elevated at the same time. They don't offer flights for groups larger than five, but we were able to order one dealer's choice flight based on our preferred flavor profiles. From there, we could select a bottle inspired by the flight. A few of us gravitated toward reds. Our waitress was incredibly knowledgeable -- we told her the flavor profiles we liked, and she brought out three reds to try. The Wade & Wayfarer Pinot Noir was our favorite (so good!), though a bit pricier. We also tried the Alkoorai Cab/Merlot blend, which ended up being our least favorite. Ultimately, we chose the Denner Nightshade GSM -- excellent pick. Bonus tip: if you purchase a bottle $50 or more, there's no corkage fee; under $50, there is. Our waitress also mentioned that South American Merlots are the best Merlots as we all mentioned Merlot tends to be more dry. A few in our group ordered the Masterpiece Theatre cocktail on our waitress's recommendation -- she did not steer us wrong! Food-wise, everything was a hit. Our friends ordered the Cacio e Pepe burrata, pickled shrimp, Caesar salad, mushroom and leek flatbread, and the Brie and pear flatbread (both flatbreads were huge!). They loved every dish. My husband and I shared the bread with olive oil (simple and delicious), the charred octopus (tender with amazing flavor), gnocchi Bolognese, and lamb chops. Everything was fantastic -- the only small note was that the lamb could've been a bit more rare -- but still very flavorful. By the end of the night, all six of us agreed we'd absolutely be back. We're even looking into their wine club -- $60/month for two bottles (pickup required at the shop), which honestly sounds like a great deal. I visited the store today to use a gift card that was purchased via Amazon by a friend for my…read morebirthday. I later learned that Amazon did not load card which caused a hassle for me trying to rectify the situation. The store staff was so patient and understanding as I stepped out of the line and spent a great deal of time on the phone with Amazon. Cullen was so helpful and gave me 15% off of my purchase and apologized. Although this was not a Total Wine issue, I was grateful at how the staff treated me as I dealt with this ordeal.
