I have pulled up there 15 minutes to close before and gotten shooed away by an employee with locked doors. How is that acceptable? That has happened on multiple occasions. This store is fairly new and I can't believe I hadn't checked it out earlier. Upon entering, it was super spacious and had several huge advertisements from brands... even a huge Moscow Mule cup and a huge purple Kings chair by non other than Crown Royal lol. I got my bottle (pineapple vodka, easy to find) and headed to the register to purchase. At the register I noticed that they had an event listing for the store, events such as free alcohol, can you say win!!! The two guys that were working were really nice and even laughed when I joked about the black guy being named Bic (which wasn't his name but what I thought I heard) it reminded me of Kevin Harts movie where he chose the name Bic Mitchum. Nonetheless, this will be my go to store from now on and I will be lurking so that I can make it to some of those free events lol.

It was founded by husband and wife Jeff and Melissa Sapsford and their business partner Stevie Treichel. Jeff previously managed the Sunset Beer Company craft beer shop in Los Angeles and also worked for Norm's Beer and Wine in Vienna (VA). The Sapsfords teamed up with Treichel to open their own bottle shop that focuses on craft beer and small production wines (especially ones that are locally produced). Melissa focuses on the store's gourmet goods program and helps with community outreach programs. The shop opened in the Potomac Yard section of Alexandria to much local acclaim. In February 2025, the partners announced that they would be moving to a new location in the Del Ray section of Alexandria. The reason for the move was to offer expanded parking and to get away from construction which surrounded the original location on Richmond Highway. Department of Beer & Wine closed in March 2025 and reopened at their new location the following November. I recently visited Department of Beer & Wine while I was staying in the DC Metro area for a few days. I was looking for a place that had a good craft beer selection, and Department of Beer & Wine came highly recommended on Yelp. The shop is a little on the smaller side, but nonetheless they have an impressive selection of craft beer and sustainable wines. They even have 20 beer taps so that customers can purchase a crowler of fresh draught beer, cider, and even craft soda. I recently transitioned to a sober lifestyle, and fortunately the shop had a decent selection of non-alcoholic craft beer as well. I ended up picking out a six-pack of "Brevet IPA" by Atlanta-based Halfway Crooks Beer. I wasn't familiar with the beer or the brewery, but it had a good rating on Untappd and I decided to give it a try. I'm glad that I did because it was really refreshing! Department of Beer & Wine is an excellent battle shop and I highly recommend it to any craft beer or wine afficianados who are in the DC Metro area!

FSG is sandwiched between One Good Tern Wild Bird store and Simply Fish restaurant in an odd layout of a strip mall off Quaker and Braddock in Alexandria. They have a vast selection of wines, ports, cheeses, caviar, and breads. What keeps us going back, and a lot of our friends talk about this, too, is that there is not a hint of pretention there. The owners are so very helpful, patient and kind. The prices are also comparable to bigger stores and chains. And, of course, they do generous case discounts. We normally buy cases of the Le Petit Duc La Porte (glad I'm typing it because I can't pronounce it) and we get a better price at Fern Street Gourmet than what they're selling it for at Whole Foods. Off-street parking is almost always available here. I know they do tastings, too, but have never been to one. If you're looking for a nice pairing for a special dinner or holiday meal but don't want to feel looked down upon like in some other wine joints, check out Fern Street. Clare, from Tallula wine bar, works here part-time, too, and really knows her stuff.

The best word I can use to describe my shopping experience at UnWined as of late is "undignified". I question whether the new owner is actually interested in curating an interesting wine and beer selection for both the novice & educated consumer or if she's just using this storefront as a personal playground with no interest in serving the customers of this established business. In the year since the new owner has taken over, I have seen full-time staff members get fired and replaced with 19 year old part-timers, I have seen the most ridiculous events being advertised that have barely anything to do with wine, and I have seen the most unprofessional behavior happening on the store floor that makes me feel like I'm walking on eggshells (e.i. the owner yelling at customers, flipping out about a broken water heater, getting upset over missing shipments). During the weekends, the entire store feels like a circus with the owner's friends peddling their mediocre goods, and shopping for wine in a relaxed way feels nearly impossible...it's hard to do anything when someone named DJ Thunder Bunny is playing her set, someone is selling you their gluten-free bread in front of the French wine section, and there's a dog adoption drive happening all at the same time. A lot of people, including myself, have just stopped shopping here because it's such an uncomfortable experience now. I hope things change, but I'm not feeling particularly optimistic since the owner has only doubled down on the cringey events. Despite all my negative feedback, I want to give a shoutout to Sparlan. He's a delight to talk to!
