The overweight sales rep with short hair is the worst customer service rep I've ever experienced. Personality is absolute garbage. And I say this understanding that she is a cashier at video game store & would probably be doing something else were she capable. When you have zero personality & customer service skills, at least try & fake it. Line was forming, and she would not ring up anyone until another person working there was finished "buffering." She was extremely annoyed when I asked if she was able to ring anyone up while the other employee was buffering. She snapped "well if I do, I would help the person in front of you." Well I would hope so, thats how lines work, next in line. This employee obviously could care less if she worked there, was not interested in selling the store's merchandise and she has undoubtedly cost the business money in the past with her terrible attitude and customer service. I've visited this establish 3 or 4 times, and after two of those visits, I left feeling degraded and embarrassed afterwards. The customer service is very disappointing, and I would love to support a local business which sells things that I'm interested in, but both of the men that run the place are very rude and seem like they don't really enjoy it. One of the times I came in to look at their selection of GBA games in search of some rarer Pokémon games. I wasn't surprised to see that they didn't have them since they are pretty rare, but when I asked the owner if they ever get some of them in, his tone and language felt very belittling and condescending, as if I didn't know what I was talking about. I wasn't sure if he was normally like this, or if it had something to do with me being a young woman and thinking I'm unknowledgeable with the rarity of the games I was looking for, but regardless, it was a bad experience that made me wish I hadn't visited in the first place. Another time, I came in to exchange some games for cash. Overall, it took under 5 minutes which was a relief considering as soon as I stepped up to the counter to tell the man that I wanted to exchange some games, he made a snarky, rude remark to me, which even my sister that was with me noticed. I simply went in to exchange a few games for cash and in the minimal amount of time I was in the store, I was made to feel stupid, and once again regretted my visit. I really tried hard not to judge the establishment off of the first bad experience I had because I truly believe that nothing should just be given one chance to prove itself, but after two bad experiences, I'm not sure if I'll be visiting again, which is saddening considering it's a neat business I wish I could support. I would definitely reconsider if they attempted to improve their customer service. Just looking at their replies to other disappointed customers on google reviews shows how passive aggressive and condescending they are to criticism. For me this more recent addition to the video game marketplace trumps A-1 and Play N Trade as the best game store in the valley. Mind you it doesn't compare to the size and scope of some established game stores in larger markets, but for Boise it's solid. Formerly the site of a Blockbuster Video, it's not as sleek-looking as Play N Trade but is miles above the trashy environment of A-1. It has Play N trade beat handily when it comes to selection for older game systems, and their overall collection of games is larger than what A-1 offers. As an older gamer, what stands out for me here are the people running the store. The owner is a true old-school gamer. And unlike the other stores where selling games seems like more of a simple business opportunity, you can tell that the people running the place at VIP are passionate and extremely knowledgeable about games. It would seem like running a video game store would be a dream job for them, so I'd rather spend my money here on principle alone. Too bad it's not in a convenient location for me. The downside to their knowledge is that these guys are going to be on the ball when it comes to pricing. It won't be like walking into a pawn shop and finding the occasional game that's being sold for half of what it probably should be sold for. Still the pricing for used games is middle-of-the-road around here. I've been quoted for a few games I considered selling to them, and I found their rates to be fair. My only real knock on the place is the presence of DVD's on the racks. If they're continuing to make a tidy profit on them, then fine. Otherwise it just seems like clutter and a waste of space. Why not have an everything-must-go sale and use that space to create more of a gaming environment in the middle of the store? Like setting up chairs, TV's, and various game systems and renting out time to people who want to try games out or would rather play in a group/social environment? UPDATE Feb. 2014: Normally I don't get involved with something like this, but I urge you to click the link at the bottom of the page to check out the non-recommended reviews as well. I think this business is being screwed over and am offering my support. The day I typed this, a person with 50 reviews who had his positive review up since September 2013 suddenly got filtered. Yet when I checked some other reviews that he wrote, none of them are filtered. Someone or some people are out to get these guys by flagging the positive reviews, and I don't think the filtering of a review like that is fair. I'm a proponent of the filtering system as nothing pisses me off more on this site than blatantly phony reviews. However it's being used to the advantage of a competitor or someone with a personal axe to grind. I also believe in the legitimacy of the other positive reviews that are filtered. read more

When my husband and I first started going to VIP Game Store we did there monthly plan, pretty much unlimited video game rentals for about $20 bucks a month, and we loved it, the only reason we stopped is because the games we were buying from them were not getting played at home. I have also traded a lot of stuff for credit with them and was amazed at how much I got. You can pre-order with them, sometimes they get stuff on the release date and sometimes they don't but they let you know that before you put money down. This is a great used video game store. The two guys who run it are personable and knowledgeable. And yes, a little quirky as well. They have a large inventory of games ranging from retro NES stuff to the current generation. They give very fair amounts for trades, certainly more than you'll get most anywhere else in the valley. These guys are honest and treat their customers well. If they don't have what you're looking for they will either track it down or refer you to another store that does have it. I called before normal business hours and left a message. No one called me back, so I called again and spoke to the most unpleasant guy. He acted as though I was inconveniencing him by asking if they had two games in stock. He told me to hold on and checked. To my surprise, they had both games. Yay! I live about an hour out of town, but my husband works in the city so I asked him if he could hold the games for me until the end of the day and that my husband would be by after work to purchase them. After a very big sigh, he said okay. I thought maybe I just got someone who was having a bad day since the reviews were so positive and most speak about the customer service being great.
