There is a large paved parking lot and a grass "overflow" area for when things are busy. The park has a smaller softball / youth baseball field, a larger baseball field complete with dugouts and fencing to protect the spectator bleacher area. Basketball, tennis courts and a good sized playground plus a concrete structure with restrooms. Much of the park area is shaded. This is a really nice park and it's in very good condition. Fortunately, this park appeared and I had a chance to hang out for a bit. This is a nice park with a fenced tennis court, smooth basketball courts, a very nice covered picnic shelter and a few pieces of playground equipment. There is adequate parking though the nearby Sharpsburg Little League field could have some impact on that if there's a big game going on. Lovely park. Clean, no litter. Very nice. This is a nice park that I enjoy going for walks at, and one lap casually walking on the main track…read moreusually takes me about 10 minutes to go all the way around. In the center of the park is a decent sized fishing pond where I have caught many bluegills, although the sign says it is stocked with trout (so you may catch some here and there). There is also a decent sized playground for kids, a public swimming pool (which you can check times and cost online), and I believe some type of paddle boats (you may have to check the hours and such for that) which is the only watercraft allowed on the pond. They appear to cut the grass on Fridays (so allergy sufferers beware). They have plenty of covered picnic areas, trash cans, and bathrooms.. although I don't believe I have seen any doggy stations (I saw one lady the other day who didn't bother to pick up her dogs poop, yuck). They are open from 8am til Dusk.

Even with the recent hot, humid weather, the hike has been enjoyable because of the shading provided by the beautiful trees and the available resting areas. Parking has never been an issue although I have recently noticed more cars when I visit. It looks like even more people are visiting and enjoying the trails!

I'm guessing that there is a charge to use the ramp and parking but I did not see it clearly posted. The park has a few picnic tables, grills and a public restroom. A lovely view of the river which was supremely calm and glasslike this evening. A nice spot to sit and let dinner digest on my final evening in the Hancock area. If you're looking for a nice drive or a smooth bike ride, consider driving west on Berm Road as it continues for a couple of miles before looping back around. Gathland State Park is located on South Mountain and occupies the former estate of war…read morecorrespondent George Alfred Townsend (1841-1914), who wrote under the pen name "Gath" during the American Civil War. It is located on the Appalachian Trail and the park is operated by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. It was the site of the Battle of Crampton's Gap and one of three gaps on South Mountain where the Battle of South Mountain had been fought between Union and Confederate forces in an early encounter in the Maryland Campaign. Renovated in 1958, Gapland Hall is the park's visitors center and a museum for George Alfred Townsend ("Gath"), while Gapland Lodge has a museum depicting the battle at Crampton's Gap, which was fought just before the battle at Antietam. The park has ample parking, public restrooms and a number of picnic shelters. There is much to see and a few nice hiking areas.
