If, like me, you're the sort of person who believes that wine and near-continuous intake of bread,…read moremeat and cheese are the only things we really need in life, then let me just take a second to congratulate you on making it to this Yelp page. After a turbulent start to our first trip to Aix-en-Provence in which our cab driver exited the vehicle mid-trip to brawl with a band of local youths (with our back-seat protests and gentle reminder to turn off the meter sadly unheeded), Le Vieux Tonneau was in the right place at the right time for we weary travelers in grave need of a bucket of wine. The charcuterie and cheese platter that was set in front of us after a short wait may very well be the closest thing to a religious experience I will ever have. It took me a long time to learn how not to openly weep when in close proximity to brie, but this one really tested my emotional fortitude. Don't be surprised if you find yourself, as I did, forgiving the bartender/meat-slicer his trespasses--ahem, man-bun--in tacit recognition of the beautiful spread he will put together for you. The wine was red and that's all I have to say about that. Also, hat tip to the waiter who must have seen the two of us trying to ration off our last slice of bread like we were on the freaking Mayflower and promptly came to our rescue with an extra basketful. Merci, sir. Merci. Pro tips: When others call LVT a "hidden" gem, believe them. Google Maps is dead to me after the wild goose chase into all the nooks and crannies of Aix it sent us on in search of this place. Best to just pinpoint Rue des Chaudronniers on a map and dust off the old-fashioned (#rip) walk-until-you-find-it method. And one final word to the wise, be prepared to break out your New York elbows in order to secure a table on a Friday or Saturday night. I won't say for certain that the couple that arrived after us and who we nearly bowled over on the way to an open table was bordering on elderly, but they weren't NOT old. They definitely had some fight in them, though.

Otherwise, smaller groups can enjoy a cozy ambiance upstairs by the bar or out on the patio. If you're a little hungry, the cheese plate is divine.

We just had the best meal since coming to France at Le Jardin d'Amalula (The Garden of Amalula)…read more When we asked the owner what Amalula means, she said it is a contraction of the first names of her daughters: Amandine, Lucile, and Laurine. Laurine is the chef. The outside of the restaurant is inconspicuous; in fact, we walked right past it. But you walk down a corridor, through a small courtyard, and then into the small restaurant. But it's the garden out back that is beautiful. That's where we sat. My wife had Le Provençale, a tartine (toast) with bush cheese, red fruits jam, dried figs, dried tomatoes, and parma ham (like prosciutto). Delicious! I chose the plat du jour based on the owner's recommendation. Not sure what it's called but it was a tartine with tuna tartare & passion fruit, chutney with mango, pineapple, & red pepper, slices of avocado, and orange zest with pink berries. I don't know how they do it. Amazing flavor combinations. Glad we found this place with plenty of time to go back another time or two. Highly recommend!

They had a menu translated in english as well to remove any question on what you are ordering. We sat outside and on the Terrance and really enjoyed both. The food was delicious and beautifully presented.

Whenever I'm in France I look for romantic cafés that remind me of that song about "holiday tables…read moreunder the trees." I had a Sunday off and stumbled upon this charming little place that sits on an out-of-the-way plaza, with tables around one of the town's many fountains and a lovely view of an old church. The sun was dazzling through the trees. The restaurant's wine was chilling in the fountain. It was civilized and unhurried. The kind of day when you breathe in the sweet air and feel that all's right with your world (and for an actor, those don't come very often). Limited menu written on a blackboard, but the food was fresh and good and they didn't skimp. Finished my lunch with pear tart and an espresso. Perfect.

The plat du jour was a fish filet on a bed of multicoloured tomatoes with a tomato dressing, tarted up with the name of tartare de tomates. It was very fresh and flavourful. The fish was slightly dry (possibly overcooked, or maybe frozen), but the overall impact of the dish was very good. We had the house rosé, which went down perfectly well, though it was nothing exceptional. Finally, for dessert, we had a very good tarte Tatin a little rich, but I don't think they do diet tarte Tatin. I gather from other reviews that the food here is kind of hit and miss. We had a lovely lunch. The whole thing came to 65 Euros for two a little pricey, granted but I doubt you can find a more pleasant experience in Aix-en-Provence for the money. I would probably give this place no more than 3 stars, but the 5-star setting rates the extra star.
