Had a great meal here during our stay in Aix-en-Provence. The restaurant is small and quaint inside with outdoor seating as well. The menu is on the smaller side but that just means every dish will be great! The dry duck with poached egg starter was divine. The beef in pastry dough wasn't our favorite because it was served cold (how it was meant to be) but still not a bad starter. My husband enjoyed his chicken thoroughly and I enjoyed my fish. The sauces were flavorful. We will definitely return if we ever visit Aix again. read more

My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here. Great food at a very reasonable price. We had the cod fish and lamb shoulder. Both excellent. The desserts were very special! Nice, if limited, wine list. But again very reasonably priced. On a quiet street in Aix. Indoor and outdoor seating. Servers were attentive except for when we asked for the bill. One of the best meals I had this year. Seasonal compact menu which changes monthly. I started with a tender poached octopus and hummus. It was a bridge in Mediterranean and Asian spices. The dressing had a backdrop of soy and allowed flavors to intermingle. The parm risotto with diced squash was better than what I had in Italy. Creamy smooth texture without being heavy served with flaky cod. This is the first time I had cod served with skin. Now I know why. The first bite had some crispiness, but I opted to take it off as it got flabby. I also had an excellent bold full bodied Rhone red blend. Provencal at its best with fresh ingredients and excellent execution. A two person team, which opts to keep service to eight to ten tables, so making reservations is a good idea. A simply outstanding meal from appetizers through chocolat fondant dessert. The restaurant may not win high marks for aesthetcs, though it does qualify as quaint and intimate. But, the food is the thing. My wife's veal was excellent as was my guinea fowl. The presentation was artful and the service was attentive. Highly recommend! read more

This place is beautiful. We stopped in for dinner and on this evening, at first glance, the ever-changing menu was extremely limited in meatless options. This gave me pause but for the sake of my non-vegetarian partner, we decided to stay for a couple of small plates before going elsewhere for dinner. The small plates (a poached egg dish and an octopus/endive dish) were so delicious we decided to find a way to make it work for me too. A brief chat with our server who is also co-owner of the restaurant, resolved the issue. Her husband/chef made a beautiful vegetable melange and my partner thoroughly enjoyed a lovely fish dish. This entire meal was gorgeous-clean with bright, fresh, complex flavors. The owners are lovely and it is truly a two person show. The space is beautiful (on a quiet side street) and they've created some interesting metal pieces (table pads and a meal sign holder that attaches to the table). We truly felt the love and care they put into their space and their food. Don't miss this experience. read more

This tiny restaurant is located in one of the meandering streets of Aix-en-Provence. From the outside, its appearance is so unassuming that you might easily pass it by. That would be a big mistake. Inside, it is simple, small, and charming, with about 20 places in the main room and another room (that I didn't see) in the back. There's a bar and a set of tables along a banquette. When we were there, one waitress was very capably handling the orders. The food is inventive and outstanding. It was probably my best dinner meal on this 9 day trip in France. I ordered octopus (grilled, producing firm, crunchy or crispy textures) and cabillaud (cod) in a risotto. The flavors were deep and rich, and served at a perfect temperature (hot). My wife enjoyed a tnrtelette of Provencal vegetables. A glass of white Chateauneuf-du-Pape was a perfect accompaniment. I finished the meal with a perfectly fresh and crackly creme brûlée and a coffee. Dinner for two, including a bottle of Badoit and a Pastis, came to 80 Euros. I should add that it was difficult for me to choose my dishes, since every one sounded delicious (and appeared to be so, as others came out of the kitchen). But I was completely satisfied with my octopus and cod. The vibe here is laid back, but the food flavors are intense. The whole experience is what many people dream of in a trip to France: finding that little hole-in-the-wall place that blows your mind and taste buds, and that you will never forget. read more

Probably the most amazing meal I have ever had. My husband also agreed with me on this. The attendant was super nice. Even though they hadn't officially opened, they let us get seated outside and even brought out the menu. When the attendant noticed that I was serving my daughter special food that catered to her allergies, she even offered to heat it up. Wow, above and beyond! I have had the wait staff stare at her food in disapproval in the past bc they don't like it when we bring food from outside their restaurant. She brought out olives that were so delicious to snack on. The waitress also never tried to pressure us to drink their special bottled water and just brought out a carafe of the tap. She also didn't look disappointed that we didn't order any drinks. Some places try to make an extra buck by pressuring customers to buy alcohol. This place was great. They don't do any of the above because I think they focus on quality of food. My gosh, the food was sooo good. My husband loved his steak tar tar. He said it was the best that he has ever had. I got the fish and it was unbelievably good. It had the best risotto and greens. They gave a generous portion too. My husband got the pork cheeks and it was super good too. It was paired with so many delicious sides. I think it was hands down the best meal we had in France so far. It was so good and you could taste the thoughtfulness behind the dish. I had read reviews on Yelp ,and I gave it a try. There were several meals that looked good, but I decided on the 32 euro prix fixe menu. The starter was absolutely delicious with squash blossoms stuffed with cheese and surrounded by a tomato sauce, the entree missed the mark. The presentation was pleasing , but the ground veal had no flavor. Dessert was a chocolate dessert which was good, but not great. The meat was so tender I didn't need a knife for the guinea fowl or veal and the fish was cooked perfectly, the wine was selected to suit the meals, the plating glorious, colorful and spirited with dazzling flavors to accompany the meals. Definitely worth a visit! We had an amazing meal here this evening. Started with foie gras and vegetable tart, followed by lamb shank and sea bass. Both dinners were very flavourful and not too filling. We finished off by sharing a creme brûlée. Great drink and wine selection and great service. Still a great restaurant! We come every year to Aix and there are always changes but la Buchee is still one of the very best. It may be situated in a unattractive alley but never mind. The food is terrific. We shared a vegetable tart that was divine followed by filet of sea bream with ratatouille rather that the fennel. Absolutely wonderful. Then there is the lemon tart. This was such a great restaurant, we went twice! It's a little hard to find, and out of the main tourist area, but really worth the walk. The 21 euro lamb was excellent, served with a honey glaze on a bed of delicious puree and stuffed eggplant that had been sauteed in olive oil. The 21 euro duck ("canard") was also excellent, but the mushroom sauce that came with the duck dish was oh so good (!) that you will want to scoop it up with bread afterwards. The downstairs dining area was lovely and well lit with a modern feel. But, you can also sit indoors on the first floor, or sit outside in the cafe. On the first evening we were there, there were only 2 waitresses for the entire restaurant and they were very busy. We were patient and it was worth it. The waitress served us a "dirty" gin martini from the tiny bar that was surprisingly flavored with lavender - other than one olive, nothing "dirty" about it. But, it was really good! The second time we were there, we sat downstairs and there was only one waitress. It's a tiny restaurant, but don't let the size or decor fool you! Fantastic service. Fantastic food.
