After the unbelievable arrival experience at Shangri-La Boracay -- the gorgeous suite, the peaceful private beach, the powder-soft sand, and the quiet sound of the waves outside our room -- I honestly wondered how the resort could possibly top itself the next morning.
Then we had breakfast at Vintana Cafe.
And suddenly I understood why people become fiercely loyal to resorts like Shangri-La.
Walking into Vintana in the morning felt like entering a culinary celebration from all corners of the world. The buffet was absolutely enormous, featuring everything from Filipino breakfast classics to Chinese dishes, American breakfast staples, Italian offerings, tropical fruits, pastries, breads, desserts, and so much more that I honestly stopped trying to mentally catalog it all after awhile.
And every station looked beautiful.
Not just "hotel buffet nice," either.
Everything looked carefully prepared, fresh, vibrant, and inviting.
The breads and pastries alone could have been their own separate experience. I found myself repeatedly wandering back toward the dessert and bread area despite already being completely full. Even the desserts at breakfast were impressive, which honestly says something because breakfast desserts at buffets are often an afterthought.
But not here.
Every single thing we sampled was flavorful, fresh, and wonderfully executed.
The service, of course, was exactly what we've come to expect from a true five-star resort in the Philippines: warm, attentive, gracious, and genuinely hospitable. Filipinos truly have a gift when it comes to making people feel welcomed and cared for. Even being nearly 8,000 miles away from home, we somehow felt comfortable and relaxed almost immediately.
At one point during breakfast, I just sat quietly for a moment watching the sunlight spill across the resort while my husband happily continued making "just one more small plate" that was absolutely not small.
And honestly?
I felt overwhelmingly grateful.
There was a time in our lives when vacations like this felt impossible. Yet here we were in Boracay, celebrating our anniversary together in what honestly felt like a tiny corner of paradise.
After breakfast, we ate far too much, waddled back toward our suite, took a glorious nap, and eventually returned to the beach once again.
And really, can you blame me?
I was jetlagged, relaxed, in love, and entirely too happy.
For everything this vacation gave us -- the memories, the peace, the beauty, the closeness -- what we paid somehow felt very small in comparison to what we received in return. read more
