There used to be a hydroelectric dam upstream that could control releases, but it was destroyed in Hurricane Helene. The future of the dam is uncertain. I appreciated the warm welcome we received when we arrived. We had booked online and signed all of our waivers before we got there. We reserved(rented) water shoes for several folks, as they did not have appropriate footwear. Check in, shoe selection, and safety briefing went quickly , and we were in our tubes in no time. The river was mainly calm stretches punctuated by intermittent small rapid areas. Nothing felt daunting or too dangerous. It had the right level of excitement for the kids to handle themselves. The take out was well marked. It was easy to get our tubes up to the van for the short ride back. We took the first time slot of the day, and were amazed by the crowded parking lot when we returned around noon. We look forward to returning.

The Catawba River isn't the most scenic place to kayak, but there are some nice branches off it it where you can spot lots of turtles. Besides, there is no better way to escape the heat of Columbia in the summer than taking a ride down the Congaree River. It was a manageable waterway that's suitable for first-timers and enjoyable for all, and Kevin was incredibly attentive, patient, and encouraging throughout the ride down. Everything is provided for you -- kayaks, paddles, life vests, and even bottled water. Just remember to dress light (shorts and a tee) and bring sandals (preferably, because sneakers will take several days to dry out) that you don't mind getting wet. They answered every question quickly and efficiently. Our know-it-all guide Gage made sure to tolerate our incessant laughing and foul language. He made us feel safe and made sure we enjoyed every inch of the ride. Fear not: There are outdoor bathrooms and changing rooms. Pro tips: SUNSCREEN! Opt for dry-fit over cotton...trust me. You will have to carry the raft (standard practice) so be prepared. No matter what, you're getting wet (like soaked!!!) so pack a complete change of cloths (shoes too friends) and we recommend a towel. Water shoes will be your best option especially if you are flying after. There are changing room but It's an outdoor adventure camp so expect to see bugs and spiders. If you are overly fastidious, take bug spray & sanitizing wipes! Make sure to leave enough time to pet two most beautiful pups in the county!
