Even if you're like me (read: you're not a good swimmer and you've never been kayaking), you'll have a great time and get the hang of things pretty quickly. Besides, there is no better way to escape the heat of Columbia in the summer than taking a ride down the Congaree River. It was a manageable waterway that's suitable for first-timers and enjoyable for all, and Kevin was incredibly attentive, patient, and encouraging throughout the ride down. Everything is provided for you -- kayaks, paddles, life vests, and even bottled water. Just remember to dress light (shorts and a tee) and bring sandals (preferably, because sneakers will take several days to dry out) that you don't mind getting wet. UTILIZE THIS GEM. **We used them for Kyaking at Congaree National Park** - Very reasonably priced - Incredible Customer Service - High quality equipment This place has exceptional customer service. Really top notch. We gave them a call on Monday (even though) they were closed, and luckily Kevin (the owner) picked up. We were coming from Hilton Head and were still roughly 2.5 hours away. Kevin said that he would meet us at the shop and get us hooked up. We had a large SUV rental car that was not outfitted for hitching kayaks anyway. Again, no problem. Kevin spent about an hour plus (i'm assuming on his day off) not only providing us with all the gear, but helping us fasten everything safely to the car. We took the kayaks to Congaree National Park and kayaked Cedar Creek (HIGHLY RECOMMEND - It's a great way to see the park). Dropping off the equipment was also a BREEZE. BAD AT BUSINESS CANCELS TRIP LAST MINUTE DOES NOT COMMUNICATE OR RESPOND DOES NOT REFUND UNPROFESSIONAL I DON'T LEAVE BAD REVIEWS, SO FOR ME TO DO THIS...SHEESSSHHH READ FOR SPECIFICS: Such a disappointing and time-wasting experience. Before I explain my experience with Adventure Carolina just let me begin with, I choose Adventure Carolina because of all the great reviews, I should have paid more attention to when the reviews were from. Years ago, it seems they had great reviews, but the latest reviews will show they cancel last minute (which happened to us), and communication is terrible (also experienced this). The trip was $90, I told Kevin (owner of Adventure Carolina) once I hung up with him I would send the Venmo payment...15 minutes later Kevin called me back and said "Did you send that Venmo? I can't reserve the spot unless you pay." I apologized for not sending it right away, either way, within 15 minutes of reserving I sent $120 in total ($30 for gratuities), although we did not go on the trip yet, I want to make sure I sent payment with gratuities to avoid forgetting later. The payment was sent, and Saturday was all set. We were meeting Kevin at a meeting spot to start the trip at noon. Saturday, I text Kevin at 8 AM just to confirm we were all good, no response. After packing up for 3 kids and 3 adults, lunches, clothing, and coolers Kevin calls at 11:40 to cancel because of car problems. I'm human, stuff happens, no big deal, basically told Kevin "I'm sorry to hear that, just send the refund, and we will find something else to do today, no worries." Without going into every little detail let's just say "many" ignored phone calls, "many' ignored text messages, and "many" Venmo requests for the $120 back, Kevin completely ignored me. SATURDAY, SUNDAY, MONDAY, TUESDAY...NOTHING. My brother then decided to text Kevin from his phone number to "book a trip" to see if Kevin would respond ...SURE ENOUGH KEVIN CALLS MY BROTHER BACK. At this point I am shaking with disappointment because he had been ignoring me completely to avoid sending the money back, either way, my brother answers, and Kevin's going through his "business run down, pricing blah blah blah" when my brother then says "let me put my sister on the phone who is in charge of the trip"...I get on the phone and say " Hi Kevin this is Amelia, I need you to send that money back" Shocked that it was me, I then asked Kevin why has he been ignoring my text, calls and Venmo request, he claimed to never have got any of them, yet he got my brother's text and called from that exact number. Anyways the reason for my review I TOLD KEVIN IN THESE EXACT WORDS "I KNOW REVIEWS CAN REALLY MAKE OR BREAK A BUSINESS AND I AM JUST LOOKING FOR A REFUND, THAT'S WHY I'VE BEEN TRYING TO GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU BECAUSE I'M NOT OUT TO RUIN YOUR BUSINESS BUT I WOULD LIKE MY MONEY BACK." Yes! Kevin is a fantastic guide. Our group of six included old hands and newbies and Kevin made sure we all were comfortable and had a great time. I highly recommend Adventure Carolina! My college boy and his girlfriend had ridden with him before on the Congaree, so when we came to Columbia for a visit - the kids suggested going down the Saluda-3. Nice! I used them for a kayak trip and it was great, but then rented tubes and by the time we arrived at our destination to put in the river the tube was deflating, so had to double up on a single tube. Took the tubes back and they would not credit the tube. I'm a Middle Ages women not a college kid. Poor customer service for that reason only! read more
