So I've been to Amsterdam Modern's old location in the valley and decided to check out their new…read moreplace on my last visit to LA. gone is the chain link fence in the front and meltingly hot 1000 degree heat of the valley. Anyways, their new warehouse is BEYOND amazing! There is an obvious front entrance that leads straight to the offices and a showroom area. To the right there's a larger room that looks out onto the street that also acts as a second showroom. You walk past the foyer area and into the new warehouse and... *drum roll* Stacks upon stacks of mid-century beauties! Still just as cool as it was in their old location, but more well lit and spaced out. I browsed around the aisles for a while, taking it all in and wanting everything, finding one great teak table and then another even better one hidden behind it. There are huge stacks of industrial school chairs that are very moderately priced ($125-185 depending on the design). I could easily get a few minimal looking dining chairs. The plywood ones are goooooorgeous. Their prices are reasonable and on par with other mid-century stores, but I found a few more unique/one of a kind items (everything is vintage, so I guess it's technically all one of a kind...) I was looking for a lounge chair and found multiple options, ended up getting a more classic one with a teak frame and upholstery. Also got a beautiful and bright industrial "tomado" wall mount shelf with yellow and red shelves! hehehehehe. Overall very walk-in friendly, employees are nice and helpful! Definitely know their stuff. Recommend calling ahead if you want to look at anything from their site so they it'll be ready to look at when you're there. They also have a loading dock area in the back to make putting all your new shiny new things in your car easier. The owner Ellen also came out and asked how we were doing, you could definitely tell how she loves all these great pieces she collects and ships back here so we can have them too :D

I had the following requirements: that the piece be under 180$, in good condition (if vintage), and have a finish that was fairly cohesive with the rest of my furniture (which is by no means incredibly matchy-matchy). You'd think those would be reasonable demands, but the entire thing was proving to be an exercise in futility. It seemed I had a choice between the following: genuine eyesores, super damaged/decrepit goods (way beyond standard vintage wear-and-tear), way too small (roughly the size of a raised foot stool), insanely expensive/way out of my budget, and charmless "meh" mass-produced department store numbers. A lot of the time, I got several of the above, particularly when it came to any authentic vintage items (in awful shape and still very expensive). Even though one of my favorite interior designers of all time, Sally Breer, is a fan of this place, I wasn't expecting much when I went to browse at Hernandez Furniture/Vintage Concepts (next door to one another, but owned by the same people). But I instantly found a piece that fit my exact criteria - a small Danish Modern book shelf in a lovely finish that looked nearly brand new, excluding a very tiny, almost non-noticeable chip on the bottom corner (which pretty much nobody would even notice, but I'm detail-oriented to a fault). I decided to pounce. It was already in my budget, but I ventured to ask if the chip on the bottom was included in the current price. I was expecting a snobbish "yes", but the guy working, who was very friendly, gave me a discount and even used a special "wood" marker to color in the chip to match the surrounding wood, making it even more difficult, almost impossible, to see. I took my little vintage friend home that day - it fit snugly in my backseat - and was so happy once I filled it with my stuff and positioned it. It provides ample storage and goes beautifully with my other furniture. My overall experience here was wonderful and I can't recommend this spot enough! If you want a beautiful vintage piece at a reasonable price, go here. I'm lucky to have found it!

I found a Henry Link Ma Hai dresser online which was in bad shape. Just by sending him a few photos he was able to quote me a price for the restoration. He went all the way to Santa Monica to pick it up, took it to his refinisher, fixed the drawers, matched my specific wall paint color, cleaned the original hardware and delivered it up to the second floor bedroom! All impeccable reliable service. It's now a beautiful lacquer Downpour Blue and the drawers are so smooth. His shop is full of gorgeous items and if he doesn't have what you are looking for he will call you if he finds it and paint it to your color. The sales staff confirmed that is indeed hair and she was very helpful to fix this issue. She ordered a replacement for it but the replacement also came with hair in it. Eventually, she got me connected with a product manager to discuss the problem and he was very rude. When he basically told me that I am wrong, I mentioned how the sale staff confirmed that this is in fact a piece of hair but he started to talk over me and told me not to trust the sale staff. He explained how that is not hair and it's a piece black fiber in a aggressive tone. It seriously looks like a piece of pubic hair. When I asked him if this isn't hair, then is it a part of the design. The answer was maybe and it happens. To sum it all, this $500 chair comes with pubic hair or " black fiber" baked into the chair. The place is not huge, and it does not need to be. It has an amazing selection of various tables and chairs and some art. Also, whatever you want they can make for you. I always find exactly what I want right there. They also have a great website to browse what is in stock. The service is wonderful. Call them before you go because sometimes the front door is locked, but someone is there. The owner is so nice and she often answers the phone. It is family owned. The prices are super fair and they will tell you how to care for your furniture so it lasts a life time. I recently bought a beautiful table, 4 chairs and their great cushions for a little outside patio. It is so pretty and it is just peaceful. I bring in the cushions when I think it might rain. Nothing fades and it is built so well. They make it all themselves right here in California. The tables on their website or in stock are always available for curbside pick up, home delivery and shipping anywhere in the United States. If you want you can arrange delivery by phone or email. I love to just go there. And I am disabled, but had my husband was with me. The furniture is heavy and the main employee helped us load it into our truck and made sure it was wrapped in such a way that nothing would break or get scratched. Now, if you live within 20 miles of the store always ask for local delivery or pick up. Again the tables are handmade at their store/factory in Los Angeles. The tables are made to go indoors or out. With proper care they will last many years outside. They are not frost resistant unless under a covered patio, so be careful of that. Care should be taken to move the table top to a sheltered place during the winter if your climate is subject to freezing temperatures. They can also be damaged under full sun in very hot climates, but it has to be super hot for sometime. The tables are made with either high-fired ceramic tile or stained glass. Both of these materials are durable. They will never fade or wear out, and are extremely chemical and stain resistant. Both materials are hand-made and will naturally have some imperfections and color variations. The frames, bases and seating are powder-coated steel. Each one is a wee different because of the hand made quality so you will have an original. The tables and bases are made separately. They make bases in coffee (17-19"), dining (29"), kitchen (36"), and bar (42") heights for all tables. They can also custom make a base any height in-between. If you like it they will make it for you and they don't take forever. Use 511 Impregnator Sealer by Miracle Sealants twice a year if your table is out in the elements. They even have a You Tube channel to show you how to do it. It takes no time at all and I think they sell it there. They also have some nice art that you will not find elsewhere. It is my favorite place to get tile furniture. Go there.
