While visiting Strasbourg recently, my husband and I decided to stop here for an afternoon glass of wine. The location is beautiful and the crowd seemed to indicate that it was a popular place. Our experience there, however, was subpar at best. When we walked in, we saw a table at the window that was emptying, so we asked to be seated there. They obviously didn't consider the fact that either of us spoke French (I do, and my husband speaks a little, too), and the bartender and another waiter had a short conversation about not letting the Americans sit there. In English, they said, "no, it is reserved," then chuckled to themselves. My husband had already spotted another place at the bar, so we sat there instead, although I wish we had gone worth our gut and left the bar instead. We ordered our wine and we're basically ignored for the rest of the time. After we finished our glass of wine, I went to the restroom and my husband asked for the check (in french), and was openly (and loudly) mocked by one of the bartenders because my husband apparently didn't have the perfect accent. He took Tom's money, turned around and said (to the other bartender), in a very Americanized french accent, "Puis-je avoir le CHÈCQUE S'ILLLL VOUS PLAYYYY," and started laughing like a fool. When he turned back around, he realized that my husband had heard every word, turned bright red and then tried to be friendly. Really? We were just trying to enjoy a nice glass of wine. We weren't loud, we weren't obnoxious in any way, and we keep to ourselves. It was humiliating. Needless to say, our server got no tip at all, and we left with a sour taste in our mouths. Shame on them. Oh, and by the way, the people who came in after us walked in and sat at the table by the window without even asking if it was available. It was very obviously not reserved. read more
