One Star Rarely do I feel compelled to leave a one-star review, but our experience at Vino was truly one of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. It started before we even stepped inside. Our party of six waited nearly 15 awkward minutes outside at the hostess station before a single employee acknowledged us. Once seated, we were placed in a back room that was at least quieter than the front of the restaurant--which was nearly deafening--so that felt like the only small win of the evening. Unfortunately, everything else went downhill fast. After being seated, it took another 15+ minutes just for the waitress to take our drink orders. Appetizers followed and were mediocre at best, nothing remotely memorable or worth the wait. My Caesar salad was laughable. It advertised house-made chunky croutons--there were three, each no larger than a Hershey's Kiss. The salad itself was watery and bland, as if the lettuce hadn't been dried before the dressing was added. I even had to ask for pepper, which somehow confused the waitress. The main course was the final insult. I ordered the Cacio e Pepe with Conecuh sausage, priced at $31. The "sausage" consisted of three tiny pieces, totaling maybe one ounce combined. For that price? Are you kidding me? By the end of the meal, our table was stunned--not satisfied. Little to no protein, minimal substance, and zero justification for the prices. The penne vodka pasta and hangar steak were good but nothing special for the price. The martinis are fabulous - my favorite is the Chilton County Strawberry. A plus: if you come on a Monday, there are select drinks and appetizers for $8. Our server was attentive and kind. She helped serve our birthday cake, but do note that we were charged for cutting the cake at the table. What really will keep me coming back is the ambiance. Came in for a work function and the room and was not impressed. We had half of the main room roped off, making for an awkward divided space with a group and general guests, did not flow well. Came here for Saturday brunch for a friend's birthday. They took reservations and had our table ready outside. Our server Liz was very attentive to our group and really nice! The menu is very specific down to the syrup. I ordered Capellini vino with chicken. It tasted pretty close to a chicken alfredo. It was a little bland for my taste. I was told that the salmon was good. My sis enjoyed the hash tower (no tomatoes). The little potato cakes were really tasty, but the bacon was very crispy. Several people got the American and it was agreed that the thick, very crisp bacon was giving a taste of pork rinds. No complaints about the conecuh sausage. All in all... There was not enough room for servers or other diners to get by, and people kept running into my chair. The cacio e pepe pasta was overcooked and watery, with clumpy cheese and thin-sliced breakfast-style bacon on top as opposed to a well-combined sauce and nice cubed pancetta or guanciale. Hummus was runny. Tiramisu was dry. Menu felt outdated. Service was awkward. There were no mocktail options for those in our group who needed them. I had a group of 6 for my 30th birthday at vino. We were put in a closet first of all. I couldn't decide if this was cool or awkward. So let that go. But what made this entire evening so bad was the hostess, who from the start was disrespectful, rude and pushy. My mother brought a cake and the hostess told us when we sat down that we can't take the cake. My mother said politely we were told on the phone they would cut and serve the cake. The hostess proceeds to very aggressively RIP THE CAKE from mothers hands and she responds with "OMG what are you doing!?". The manager walked up and the hostess explained they just couldn't put it in the fridge for health code purposes but they can do everything else. We say that's fine and she takes it less aggressively this time. Then when it's time to serve the cake, the bitch comes back. The hostess is the one who brings it out. I blow out the candles and she immediately takes the cake off the table. I told her I wasn't ready yet and wanted to get pictures of the cake before she took it. She essentially blows me off by saying "oh your friends got plenty of pictures." And took my cake and walks off. We were all in shock. Nobody knew what to say. Who blatantly talks to their guest as if they are children? Why are you in such a hurry? All of this was just so unnecessary. I didn't get any pictures. This was a $100 cake. I was so excited about my birthday party and this woman ruined it. We spoke to the manager and all he did was apologize. We spent hundreds here. I'm so disappointed with this place. I wanted to come here FOR YEARS and my first and only experience was a major disappointment. I feel extremely disrespected. I'm sad I don't have the pictures I wanted of this cake. It was beautiful. As expensive as it is, you think there would be more. It took forever for them to even fill up our water glasses. We commented how we were glad we went at night and weren't in the sweltering sun waiting forever without water. We'll never be back. ROACH AND RAT DROPPINGS LITERALLY IN EVERY INCH OF THE RESTAURANT. I have worked in many restaurants over the years and this place is hands down the worst work environment I have ever experienced. First, I find it incredibly hard to believe this place hasn't been under investigation for how unsanitary they keep the kitchen and dining areas. The expo line where the food is garnished before being served has roach droppings literally everywhere. We just place the pasta spoons and other silverware on top of the droppings. Never seen it cleaned nor have been asked to clean it. The oysters sit out on the counter to thaw out from being frozen. Bread and apple fritters are left out in the open uncovered the entire shift and into the next day. Never seen those put away either. The kitchen staff in the back literally never wash their hands and I'm pretty sure are undocumented. I had to ask for more soap and paper towels in the kitchen since no one uses the soap in the kitchen. The kitchen area in the back is so incredibly cluttered and small that more than 4 people in the back in my opinion is a safety hazard. The owner also is in debt so he cheats guests on alcohol pours, food portions and increases pricing for food that tastes like school cafeteria pasta. After seeing the conditions of the kitchen and dining area i would never eat here or have anyone i cared about eat here. The dining area with carpet has never been cleaned and is so full of gunk the carpet feels sticky. Al, The owner is also an incredibly rude and nasty individual who also has a terribly offensive body odor. I was warned by literally every staff member of the owners attitude and disrespectful actions my first day and i can confirm the allegations are all true. Al, the owner, is a very hateful and mean old man. He only has two servers who have stayed and dealt with his treatment more than two months. He made a girl cry my second shift. I was fired because I walked away from him while he was talking so i could serve my tables food. He told me to my face that the guests food comes SECOND to whatever crap he has to say. Any well trained server knows that the guest ALWAYS comes first and hot food is ALWAYS priority over anything else. The owner has slammed doors in servers faces and snatched things out of their hands in such an aggressive way that I'm a little concerned for his wife at home. The owners son should take over because the owner is not mentally capable anymore. The owner jokes about service at Applebees or Olive Garden but chances of getting roach droppings in my food is less likely there! Any server who knows what they're doing and appreciates fine dining service with a team effort environment would steer clear of this place.
