The owner/manager/worker that I encountered was super friendly. He was helping other customers, but took a second to say hi to me when I came in. He then came over once he was done helping the other customer and told me about their 2 bottles for 20 dollars special. There is a good deal of wines in crates that are standing high and backlit. They all looked super expensive, and I couldn't see the prices visible... It's like going into one of those boutique stores and seeing like a couple of shelves with one item each, and being like, oh.. this is gonna be expensive as shiz. But amazingly, it wasn't! They definitely have some affordable bottles! #YelpTip: The prices are on the back of most of the bottles. I asked him for a recommendation for a cabernet and he was super generous with information. I am so jealous of everyone that lives in Frederick and gets to go here whenever they want. I wish Bob would move to Raleigh!! This store is a treasure. No, really. Viniferous is a great place to get wine or beer in Frederick. The owner is an extremely nice guy who will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about whatever you're interested in (plus a little more usually, but in a good way). Not knowing much about wine myself, I always ask him for suggestions for a casual wine drinker and he never disappoints. He always picks out wines that suit my taste and are not too expensive. There is also a small, but excellent, beer selection. You will find quite a few beers in there that I guarantee you won't find any other place in Frederick and perhaps not even in the DC area. The interior is well designed to show off the wine and you can tell that it has some personal touches to it. Plus I think they offer wine tasting classes and specials on certain days. There are few times when five stars are actually warranted, this is one of them! We had a private wine tasting with Luke for a fortieth birthday. We could not have had a better time! Luke perfectly picked wines for us to taste and gave us a little lesson on each. Finally! Someone opens a wine store downtown. I love the fact that now I can simply walk down the street, step in this ultra cute store, chat with the owners, and get a bottle of wine (or two). The owners are very helpful and ready and willing to give you advice if you need it. We've only been once, but the bottle of Spanish wine that we brought home was so delicious (and tasted exactly like the owner described it) that we will definitely be regulars at Viniferous. (By the way, it's in the space that the pottery store used to be in, right across the street from Volt) read more

Downtown Frederick offers any number of places to buy fine wines and beers, but Viniferous stands out for its handpicked selection and attentive service from the father and son team that run the shop. It's best to shop here when you have some time to browse and let the owners help you make your selection. On weekends, they usually have something open for you to taste. They recently added a humidor and I stopped by to check it out before a meeting with some old friends. In typical Vinferous fashion, they only carry one brand, which I have never seen anywhere else. A great new addition to downtown. The shop soft-opened just a few days ago, and they're still just receiving the initial round of inventory today. Even though the shop is just getting stabilized, it already features a small but very interesting selection of wine picks - maybe 4 dozen or so total? - but each well labeled with hang tags and explanatory notes. I didn't see any high distro-supermarket stuff, and no cheap stuff either - it seems to be all reasonably priced handpicked bottles in the $10-$50 range, give or take. The shop also features a few craft brews. A local newspaper article suggests the owner will be tying into downtown restaurants, so you can have a glass for dinner, and then stop in here to take a bottle home. (That's a great idea!!) There are special tasting/pairing events for both beer and wine that sell out very quickly. So, you need to be on the mailing list (best) or like them on Facebook. When looking for fine wines from a well researched source, not just following trends, this is the place! The owner is well traveled, finding fantastic wines from all over the world, bringing a selection of wines that seems to set the standards for other places downtown. (Seriously, after a bottle is here, other stores carry it in weeks or months to come.) The owner is very approachable, he has an interesting background in the niche. This place is a fantastic place to bring 10-16 friends (5-6 couples) for a wine tasting party to learn about wines, regions, and the real bounty of wines. Which means a lot more than simply repeating some trendy article or hearsay. To really appreciate life in the art of the grapes. Can't wait to go back. Viniferous is a great wine shop with the best customer service. Just ask the father son duo Bob & Luke to help you with a selection and the never seem to miss. They may ask what you are pairing the wine with or what the occasion is. They are even mindful of keeping you within your budget. Can't beat that! The shop is set up beautifully with ever changing amusing artwork by a local artist. Oh and if wine isn't your thing their is a great selection of craft beers in the back room. If there were such a thing as a "Learning Liquor Store" in Frederick, this would be it. (I use liquor generically - he sells wine and beer. Time was in Frederick you could only get wine in the liquor store.) Bob Kannor, the proprietor/wine-monger, is knowledgeable about the wines, and their stories. He's tried, I think, every wine he buys, and if you engage him in a conversation about the wine, he's likely to bring out a topographical map of the region of origin of the wine you're buying. Come enough and you'll find out about his wine tastings. In addition to being fun and meeting other folks who like wine, you'll learn a ton about wine from Bob, the vendors, and other folks at the tasting who like wine. No prior knowledge required - I certainly still have palate problems - so I wouldn't worry about not knowing anything. read more

This is my go-to wine store. There is a small, but surprisingly diverse selection of wines across the cost spectrum. There are some exceptional (and pricey) wines alongside good, and reasonably-priced wines. I appreciate the expertise of the staff and their recommendations. I never leave the store with less that two bottles of wine, and frequently return to pick up more bottles of the wine recommended from the last visit. read more
