If you have any time to kill before a concert, it's a third Thursday, or you're just wanting to browse, this is definitely the place for you. The store specializes in cute fun gifts and trinkets. They have everything from cookbooks to baby toys to stickers. There are gifts for almost every age and demographic. There are often goods from local artists and creatives which is really nice. One of my favorite features is the monthly art locker. For a one-time cost, you get a physical key with access to a locker with monthly goodies! The staff may be some of the kindest I've met. You can always talk about your day or learn about what's been going on downtown. There is a shop cat named Yuki who is soooooo cute and is my personal "where's waldo" whenever I'm in the store. Their marketing and promotions are really fun and the videos often make me laugh. They offer some free and paid events, making it a nice place to meet new people and engage in creativity. One of these days I need to make their cloud workshop!

I was greeted when I walked in and was able to walk around the shop at my own pace, and if I had a question, I could ask the person at the counter, which I appreciated. They had some unique stuff and some art installations inside, which was neat to see.

This cute shop is mainly a yarn store, with tons of skeins of yarns for sale. They also have some accessories/notions and other items for projects, and I did find a cute embroidery kit. They host events and classes, and I would love to take an intro to crochet class some time. They also do other meetups like "Knitfaced Nights" which are drop in community craft nights. Yelp just announced their trend forecast for 2026 and searches for crocheting classes are up 220%!! So if you're looking for a new hobby, put away your phone and check out Unwind GR.

But obviously I was attempting to patronize this business and take classes but being brushed off really doesn't bode well and make one want to take a class when they cant get a simple question answered. Yes, I could have gone online but the fact that I was there IN PERSON and the owner/employee or whomever simply refused to answer any questions just simply off putting. Suppose it had been an elderly person not comfortable going online...would they get the same response? Be better...do better.

There's ample parking and the space is easy to find. There was a hand sculpting class going on at the same time, with members and staff working on their own projects as well. Everyone was extremely friendly and I really liked the atmosphere. The class itself was challenging but I really liked having a full demonstration before doing things ourselves. The instructors were really helpful and I liked that there were several so it felt like people didn't have to wait as long for help. I had a bit of an advantage having thrown before in high school but had forgotten a lot. I felt it was pretty beginner friendly and they did a great job explaining the names of things without going too heavily into the jargon nor feeling patronizing. I felt really confident with the bowl I made and liked being able to add my own design to it at the end as well. I do think it would be nice to know about the glaze options ahead of class just in case that affects how we structure or design our pieces. Overall, I definitely think the one-time class was really fun. The memberships and 8-week courses really intrigued me so I definitely think I'll be looking into those!

If I asked a question she would just give some vague verbal instruction instead of showing me how it is done. I struggled as a beginner because I felt very lost without guidance from an instructor and this resulted in me only making one piece that I was somewhat happy about. It was a waste of nearly $500 for a 8 week class. When I contacted the owner about the lack of instruction she said she would send out a Google survey asking others about their experience (which she did) but when I asked for a discount on a future class or a partial refund since I was unhappy she ghosted me. I emailed her twice and texted her and never heard back

She then had me open my purse, again, find. She then took my purse from me after I showed her the inside of it. She made a comment that it was a coach purse, and basically insinuated that I took it from the store because it still had a tag on it. It didn't have a tag on it. I have had this purse for five years. It has never set off a sensor. It was a small purse. You could literally see everything. She had no reason to take my purse from me. I then walked through the sensor again after she took my purse from me and made me empty my pockets. No sensor went off. She then had my fiancé walk through the sensor, and he set it off. She then questioned him if he was wearing a new jacket and once again insinuated that it could've been shoplifted from a store and probably still had tags on it. Turns out, we put his keys through the sensor and they are what set it off. Instead of apologizing, she said "I guess I'll let you go this time" and then radioed to whomever to tell them that she was just gonna let it slide because she couldn't find anything on us. We had very specifically showed her that it was our keys that set it off by waving just the keys through, and she still treats us as though we were criminals. I will not be returning to the specific Hobby Lobby.

They started out as a "hole-in-the-wall" frame shop over on Grand Avenue. Then they moved to their two-story space over on Monroe Avenue a few blocks north of the old Grand Rapids Press. Now they have two sites. I love that they have continued to grow. Their success is well deserved. They support artists in a big way. They help you with your presentation, ie., framing, installation, giclee printing, etc., and they have the perfect gallery space to showcase great work. Their quality of work is always top notch. When you leave your work in their hands, you know it will be handled with great care and an immense attention to detail. I've never felt fully confident with picking out frames on my own for my work, but the staff at LaFontsee Galleries has never let me down. Our combined work is still on my walls from over the years all the way to the 1990s when I moved to Grand Rapids and they opened their first frame shop. This summer, I needed to have several canvases stretched on bars for my ArtPrize entry. Linda LaFontsee and her staff performed an excellent job and helped to make my artwork a success. If I were you, I wouldn't go anywhere else in West Michigan for preparing my work for a gallery show. LaFontsee cares and it shows.
