I recently attended a class at brush studio for the first time! I had only ever been in here during art prize but I had always heard great things and I have a friend that frequents classes here so I was looking forward to finally checking one out. We went to the paint your pet session that I believe they do once a month. We submitted pictures of our pet to them after booking (about 3-4 weeks in advance) and they provided us with a general outlined sketch that we could follow for our painting. Thank god they did this because I do not consider myself creative and this made the whole thing easier and less stressful. Typically these classes provide a step by step instruction led by a teacher/instructor but since these were all individualized pet paintings, they could not really do that. The teacher was great anyways and super friendly. She offered tips on colors and how to get certain textures or features. They were always available for questions and were walking around the room most of the time to help out. I was really happy with how my painting turned out. I felt like it really looked like my pup!! They are in a great location off of Ionia with many parking garages surrounding or you may get lucky and find some street parking. They also have a bar available with many drink options that you can pay for. I look forward to taking another class here in the future! read more

I miss their old location in EGR, but this space is so much bigger! Plus, there are tons of bars and restaurants nearby to have dinner before or after. The bar inside helps too. My girlfriends and I love doing these periodically, but this was my first time at the downtown location. Unfortunately we booked it on one of the super snowy when the roads were terrible, so a lot of people had to cancel. The vibe would've been fun in a full class, but it didn't feel terribly empty since they still had all the spaces set up. I love that they get you really set up with everything you need, but also give tips on how to make your painting your own. It's fun to see how different everyone's final paintings are when we are all following the same instruction and working from the same demo. read more

We had so much FUN at Brush over the weekend! I was kinda of scared to take the class since I can't paint at all, but it ended up not being intimidating at all. Carrie, those owner, set the tone and made everybody feel at ease. I love the background music and ability to make the night what you wanted to be - there were lots of people to talk to, and lots of people doing their own thing, so you could be social or just hang with your date. Loved the easy instruction. The supplies were all assembled and ready to go. I did a Bob Ross painting party at my house once, and this was SO much nicer because it was no stress at all. read more

This place is exactly what we needed when we planned for an evening team event! It opens up at 6 so when i called them up to say i may be reaching a bit early the owner was very welcoming and said it's perfectly fine to arrive early and wait at the studio. Then when everyone arrived and picked their favorite drinks, i had to ask for a coffee as I was gonna drive to the Niagara Falls that night... i asked if a cold brew is available, though it wasn't but they readily served a freshly brewed iced coffee nonetheless! Also we were asked about any song recommendations that they could play while we're "at work"! When it comes to the painting, we were given 3 pictures to chose from a day before and the one we picked was made ready for us even before we arrived. The owner then went up to the dias and started painting the picture again from the scratch while we tried to follow. All the brushes and colors were already provided and she showed us how to make new colors by mixing and matching. We continued to have little chitchats and having fun all the way while paining. At the end our pictures were taken and we signed off with our brand new creations and a wide smile on our faces! read more

I was a member of a bachelorette party group that took the pet portrait paint & sip class this past Saturday. The studio has sketched each of our individual pets on a large canvas and had our stations all set up when we arrived. The artists guiding our class were so friendly, welcoming, helpful, and engaged in leading us as a class and providing individual help as desired. They allowed us freedom to play and experiment with our paintings as we wished while giving great step by step instruction to make sure they all turned out amazing!! When I suggested a painting night to my boyfriend to bring in the new year, I expected him to turn it down. But to my surprise he was just as excited as I was to go! We booked the class the day before and were super excited. Neither of us had ever done a painting class before. When we arrived, the studio was beautiful. I was actually kind of taken aback by just how pretty it was inside! We hung up our coats and ordered a couple beers. One woman showed us where we could find our seats and where to get our paint. Everyone was super friendly!! We had such a good time painting. The instructor was super nice and didn't rush us through the painting. She gave helpful tips throughout the class and we got to listen to a really good mix of music. When the class was over, we kept talking about how much fun we had. It's been about three weeks since we have gone and my boyfriend keeps asking when we can go back! So needless to say, we will be back. read more

This is a LOT of fun. You can learn how to paint a fun picture, have a glass of wine, some food, AND you get to take your artwork home! I highly recommend for something different to just get out. The painter takes you thru this step by step so you don't have to be a pro at this!! They have a calendar scheduling out the artwork you can learn to paint with a lot of different choices. You can also reserve your seating ahead of time online which is very convenient. They have family paint times and you can also reserve the place for private events which would be a blast. The wine and beer available are pretty nice with some local choices too. The food is from Rose's and great...finger foods for painting. read more

I had purchased this as a gift for my mom to do together after christmas. As we both never really see each other as we live in different cities. I had take time off to come up to Grand Rapids to send the day and then the painting class tonight. With little notice the day of I received a text canceling the class. However, due to the troubles they offered to make an at home kit and even deliver the kit to the house! Although we were looking forward to taking the class in person and experiencing the atmosphere, I really appreciate the effort in making something work. read more

Remember Bob Ross from the 70's? He's that guy with the 'fro with the soothing voice that taught you how to paint birds and water and trees? I don't remember him either because I wasn't alive in the 70's but I saw a few YouTubes' on him. Brush studios is like Bob Ross's prettier, way more fun, and not at all dorky cousin. Brush Studio is realativly new to the area (about a year old) but the concept has been around for awhile: It's an art instructional studio. You can sign up to take one of several different two- hour painting classes (each lesson focus ons on a different picture) or show up at an open paint session and create your own masterpierce. While I havn't done the open paint session, they making learning to paint in the group lesson completely stress-free. The canvas, brushes, an easle, and a smock are provided with the cost of the class. Everything is set up for you when you arrive and they even tell you how many pumps of paint you need for the project, taking the guess work out of it. The lesson was super easy to follow along with and after the first few brush stocks, I wasn't intimidated anymore. Our instructor was encouraging, walking around the room, providing tips to perfect each person's piece. Brush Studios offers wine, drinks, treats, and goodies to snack on all while playing upbeat music to get your creative juices flowing. The lesson is causual and offers plenty of time to chat with the people you came with or meet a new friend next to you. My mom, my 12 year old step-daughter and I painted "Footprints on Lake Michigan' during our lesson. Even with our different ages and skill levels, we all walked away with a picture that looked relativly similar to our instructors and learned a few painting tips in the process. read more

On the Saturday evening that we went to Brush Studio as a date, we painted Starry Night over Grand Rapids. The activity was fun, the instructor and other staff were friendly and helpful. We had a beverage while we waited for the class to begin. I proved to myself that I'm not an artist but I would definitely go again for the experience. The price is very reasonable in my opinion. I had to go back to the paint station a couple of times because I ran out of certain colors. The pace of the class was just a little too fast for me, but the instructors did circulate and give tips and also brought the demonstration painting around so everyone could get a closer look at it. It was a full house, so some of us were sitting quite far from the instruction area. In the end, I was able to complete the painting and even hung it on my wall at home. When I wanted another drink mid-class, the staff were able to get it for me with minimal wait. There were only slight drawbacks 1) The seats by the door were a bit chilly 2) There wasn't really enough room at the table to paint and have a drink 3) The instruction went by just a bit quickly. read more
