We had a great time! We were all a little nervous to start burning our hats at first, but once we got into it, it was easy and not at all intimidating. It was really fun to see all the finished designs and how different all of our hats looked. We were provided excellent guidance. Theguidance. The two instructors were amazing. The space was beautiful! We have already started talking about the next class we are going to take! If you are a novice crafter, not crafty at all or consider yourself an expert, I think this is a fabulous experience for everyone.

At the time, I didn't even know it was there - and so close to my house! I like that all materials were set out for us, and step by step instruction was provided. It was easy to follow along, and our mats turned out great! 2 sizes were available, and lots of different designs. At first I didn't love that I had to commit to a design beforehand, but seeing how it was set up for class I understand why. I had fun at this class and space - if I see another class option posted that I'm interested in, I would sign up for another one!

Moving from California, I felt completely lost. The community, the friendships, and the familiar…read morefaces I relied on were suddenly gone. For years, I had poured my time and energy into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & Muay Thai, but when I arrived here, I couldn't find the right training environment. I was looking for an atmosphere built on inclusivity and genuine community, and without that, it just didn't feel whole anymore. I wasn't sure I'd ever find my footing here until I finally mustered up the courage to try something completely new, pottery. When I tell people what I'm obsessed with now, they're usually shocked. It feels like a massive departure from Jiu Jitsu & Muay Thai, but the truth is, the most important part of it to me was always the community. If it weren't for the incredible team at Pottery Lane, I would still be searching for something to fill that void. Big shout out to Kelly, Kate, and Cat for making me feel so incredibly welcome since day one. Today started out as a terrible day, but having a place like this to go completely turned it around. Pottery Lane has truly become my home away from home and I'm so grateful for Pottery Lane.

There's ample parking and the space is easy to find. There was a hand sculpting class going on at the same time, with members and staff working on their own projects as well. Everyone was extremely friendly and I really liked the atmosphere. The class itself was challenging but I really liked having a full demonstration before doing things ourselves. The instructors were really helpful and I liked that there were several so it felt like people didn't have to wait as long for help. I had a bit of an advantage having thrown before in high school but had forgotten a lot. I felt it was pretty beginner friendly and they did a great job explaining the names of things without going too heavily into the jargon nor feeling patronizing. I felt really confident with the bowl I made and liked being able to add my own design to it at the end as well. I do think it would be nice to know about the glaze options ahead of class just in case that affects how we structure or design our pieces. Overall, I definitely think the one-time class was really fun. The memberships and 8-week courses really intrigued me so I definitely think I'll be looking into those!

The instructor was excellent- very kind and patient as well as knowledgeable. The studio is nice and clearly a well loved space. Very come as you are (compliment!) We were able to make 2 prices each and get a 2nd piece glazed/ fired for $5. The pickup process was easy and they even worked with my schedule outside of their normal hours. I'd definitely recommend a class here and consider doing another.

The Bissell Tree House at John Ball Zoo

The Bissell Tree House at John Ball Zoo

This uniquely beautiful facility, set high above the treetops overlooking Grand Rapids, is a…read morestunning backdrop for any wedding, banquet or special event you may have. Visitors park at the John Ball Zoo main parking lot and ride the tram car up the hill, to the enter the tree house space. The creators did a wonderful job turning what I would image was previously unused grounds into a graceful textured indoor/outdoor space with pine, floor to ceiling windows and a unique cement exterior. The wedding I attended there was smallish (about 100 people) but the space held us well and we never felt that the room too small or too big for us. The wedding ceremony was held outside on one of the patios at sunset, overlooking the Grand Rapids skyline- an image that showed up in most everyone's pictures of the evening. The reception and dancing were all held inside, with guests spilling out to the adjacent patios for drinks at the bar. The only glitch for the bride was that the day of the wedding she received a text about an hour before the event, that the tram, the main mode of transportation to the tree house, wasn't working property and they were trying to restore it by the time the event started. The zoo had a back up trolley on stand by to take guests a back way. The bride said she would prefer that they fix the tram, since that is such a special part of getting to the tree house, and thankfully, that happened by the time the event started. *Oh, and I guess should mention that guests do not get admission to the zoo (or at least we didn't), nor is there a way to get into the zoo from the tree house (that I could see) You don't see any animals on the tram either. The tree house appears to be a separate entity within the zoo.

I honestly don't understand the hype surrounding this venue. I considered it for an event, but very…read moreglad that I looked elsewhere. I attended a reception here, and that sealed the deal for me entirely. They really advertise for a much better experience than what is given in reality, including "on-Site and Transportation to and from the venue," which means that if equipment breaks down (and it did) that you are left waiting to pile onto a bus whenever they can get one to your guests. Walking into the space, all I could see was an awful slab floor. It looked as if they were still in renovation stage or something. Just awful. Your guests get one little coat rack that looks as if they bought it online, and it's in a back hallway as you make your way to the restrooms. It's a cramped space and I wonder why this place was so poorly built, but then I remembered what I call the 'benefactor factor,' and it became more and more clear. The only way that this place becomes "gorgeous," as it's been referred to in other posts, is if you spend a ton of money with a trained event professional (outside and separate cost, of course) to beautify it. Otherwise, you have a small room with a slab floor to work with. The only redeeming quality of the place is the outside deck.
