I struggled slowly and figured it was just me and somehow I wasn't as musically inclined as others that were taking it on. I decided to do lessons and first tried Guitar Center. I wasn't getting very far and felt like they were just ripping me off. The lessons were 30 minutes, but 5 was spent tuning up, 5 talking and jaw-jacking about whatever's new in the instructors life and 5 at the end buttoning everything up. So in reality there was MAYBE 15 minutes of actual instrution. I gave that up and found Jim through a friend who also takes lessons and what a difference it has made. I have only been with Jim for about 9 months and I now have a better understanding of music than I thought I ever would. He organizes the information so that each new concept builds on the previous. He doesn't waste time, but more importantly if we are working on something and the 30 minutes is up, he's never left while I still didn't understand or felt like I needed more instruction. There has been a number of occasions were he has stayed for an hour or longer. I have never gotten the feeling that he's there because he wants the $$$, he wants to teach you how to play! I've never felt intimidated or nervous, he's brings it right down to your level and does a good job explaining why and how different musical concepts work.

He let me try a lesson at first in place of my guitar lesson, and we've been carrying on since then! As a 33 year old beginner in every instrument thus far ( I had some background knowledge in band in the younger years) John has encouraged me every step of the way. I can't believe I'm still playing, and it's my favorite thing about the week! As long as John is teaching, you can bet I'll be taking lessons. He understands Song Fatigue and changes it up if you're not feeling something. He always has the skills in mind he wants you to improve on and shows them through the songs he suggests to play. If you're interested in something and can't focus on the exercises because you're desperate to know how to play it, he allows you to detour and he'll break a part of the song down for you and even come back to play it if there is something (even a small part!) that's keeping you interested in playing, he'll show you the way! I have a hard time conquering my mindset, "gah i sound terrible!" etc, and he swiftly gets us on back on track to make use of the minutes we have in the lesson. Through both my own journey as a musician (30 years as a sax player) and that of my daughter (who…read morestarted ukulele at 4 and has been taking various lessons for the past 13 years), I have learned that it can be really difficult to find a great teacher. There are tons of great players out there (especially here in L.A), people that can shred on their instruments and do things that sometime seem otherworldly. But teaching someone how to play is an entirely different skillset. Your journey (or your child's journey) as a beginner is often going to be quite different than the journey that created the great player your potential teacher has become. Maybe he/she became such a great player because they spent 10 years practicing 12 hours a day and had perfect pitch. Maybe you can only find 20 minutes, 3 days a week to practice and can barely tell one note from another. Maybe there's a major concept that came naturally to your teacher, but that you're having a hard time understanding no matter how many times or how many ways you approach it. A great teacher will be able to meet you where you are at point A as a beginner (or intermediate) player and get you to point B, C and beyond in the most efficient and satisfying way possible. That type of teacher is EXTREMELY rare and difficult to find. Vreny is definitely one of those aforementioned rare teachers! Not only is he an amazing player, but he has a great enthusiasm for teaching and an intuitive way of knowing how to connect with the student quickly and effectively and getting that student to not only make steady progress, but also have fun doing it. My daughter has had many different guitar (and piano and voice) teachers over the years, but Vreny definitely stands out as the best guitar teacher we've found! I think part of his success is due to the fact that he's had so many students over the years and has probably encountered every kind of learning roadblock imaginable and figured out how to quickly get each student past it in a way that they, as a unique individual, understands and can execute. He was upset and wanting to give up when a friend told me to give Jordan a try. Jordan gets kids! He is so amazing about figuring out their style and approach and working with that to teach them songs and theory in a fun way! The best example of this is that first lesson. We hopped on and my son was just wailing, Hendrix style on the guitar. Jordan looked at him, said hey dude, look over here for a sec. take your finger and hold this chord here with this finger- that's a note. Now wail on it again- just like before but this time know you are actually playing! It was so freeing for him- the first two lessons that was all he did- come up with a fun move on the guitar and Jordan would show him how to take it from "pretend" to actual playing. Next he taught him the most useful song in the world- happy birthday- and he played it for everyone's school birthday on zoom- no singing, just the song, but what a confidence booster! Seriously, it's been fun to watch my son learn with Jordan and there is zero stress. I thought I would be dying to have him come in person, but the zoom is so flexible and working so well I'm reluctant to rock the boat!!

Hence the four-star rating. In actuality, I would give Hemphill Music a 4.5 were that possible here. When I have been asked to rate services in the past I rarely give the highest marks because I think that there's always room for improvement. Also, in this case, I don't have much with which to compare. That being noted, Jordan is a highly-qualified and patient guitar instructor. What's most impressive is that, while he clearly seems to know a lot about theory and all that jazz, he is very down to earth and non-pretentious (unlike other instructors I've had in the past). He takes his time until you get it and will try creative ways to facilitate this. In other words, he's a good teacher and I felt comfortable with him right away. Great sense of humor too. On a more practical level, he'll come to your house and was quite flexible when it came to accommodating my schedule. I'm soon moving out of state and regret that I won't be able to continue any lessons with him, but I suppose this helps free him up to help others waiting in the wings. My short advice: definitely give him a try. I think you'll be impressed.
