However, it still turned out to be a great experience. You need to pass through a double gate to get to the lobby. The first one would take you to the Trump Winery and the second one to the Estate itself. Yes, it is still a hotel, but it feels like a country club from start to finish. The place is small enough where they, for the most part, go off your name. Dinner reservation? Okay, here is your table. Done? There is no tab (or tip for that matter). Yes, you still need to pay for it, but it just goes on your room bill seamlessly. Want something? Just ask. From the tiny two-seat bar to anything else, service is pretty personal here. For dinner the ESTATE SALAD - Arcadian green mix topped with tomato, watermelon radish, goat cheese and golden beets dressed with Trump Blanc de Blanc vinaigrette, was amazing. My main of DUCK - Pan roasted medium-rare duck breast with cherry port wine sauce, honey glazed rainbow carrots, wild rice pilaf with estate grown herbs, was the best duck I have had in a very long time. Plus, having a flight of Trump wine (white in this case) gave me a preview of the winery I would get to tomorrow. The Viognier I found to be the surprise interest out of the four I tried.

Everything went smoothly. She was very friendly and accommodating. We actually loved the curvy roads leading up to the winery and hotel. That portion of the trip would've been better in our roadster for sure! We were checked in by a friendly gentleman named Thomas. He gave us a room next to the outdoor pool. Finishings kind of reminded us a little bit of the accommodations. It was peacefully decorated, and mostly comfortable except for the couch. We were only using it to lounge in and something more comfortable would have been desirable. I took advantage of the dry sauna and hot tub, which was a short walk across the parking lot. We tried to take advantage of the grounds by walking around the small lake and through the fields. If they were in a dedicated walking trails, we didn't find them! We took a tour of the main house and enjoyed our French inspired continental breakfast, though croissants would've been a nice touch! The vistas from the winery and the hotel are quite spectacular! If you're looking for boutique or personalized lodging with beautiful surroundings, this may work for you!

There are multiple private stand alone suites and a couple others directly attached to the lounge. We stayed in suite 8 which was attached to the lounge. The lounge on site had a water filter, ice, dishwasher, microwave, coffee/tea, and a kettle. Also there's a few sit and eat tables, along with couch s and a nice sized television. Theres a vending machine here, but unfortunately it was inoperable. For suite 8, it was perfect for my husband and I. There was a huge king size bed, and beautiful bathroom with his and her sinks. The focal point of this room and the units on site is their massive glass window facing towards the outter street route 161. Parking was no problem, each suite has accessible parking directly in front of their suite. Although there's no one physically on site to assist and answer questions, property managers are very responsive via their "info" email address. The property is 21+ no pets allowed. It was super quiet at night, as Piedmont Grove lists their quiet hours begining after 8pm. This property is within walking distance to Devils Backbone Brewery and the SKI supply store. Also extremely close to Blue Toad Frog Cidery and Bold Rock, to name a few. This is very much a five star review, BUT... a couple things should be mentioned. The water from the shower after running reeks of sulfur (rotten eggs). It is so horrible we had to open windows and the door to air out the smell after showering. It is very noticeable and hard to ignore. Additionally there's absolutely no iron on site, bring a steamer or something. I confirmed this with the "info" email address after reaching out to them. Great place, I'd love to return but the shower smell should be addressed.

While we knew the place had some old-time feel to it, there were some things that were a bit unexpected such as the bathroom door not closing and the TV being broken. The thing is that we weren't there to watch TV so that was minor (and clearly can be easily replaced). We found out quickly that when something goes wrong, the team in the Mark Addy will go far out of their way to try to accommodate you to the best of their ability. Without losing a step we were given access to an additional room in the event that we were too warm in the Kensington. We took advantage of that one night, it was not even necessary the second night so it was hardly an issue. In the evenings there was sangria provided, which was not only delicious but a really nice touch. By the second night we were already looking forward to it! What can't be overstated is how delicious the included breakfast is. I honestly was expecting the typical continental type breakfast. I was very mistaken. Their menu is creative, fresh, and absolutely delicious. It was more of a treat than it was just a meal. Overall, the place is an old-ish inn with some character. You're not going to find some modernized place and, yeah there are some quirky things that could be fixed. However, it's a whole FEEL that you get from this place and the view from the front is gorgeous. Add that to the quality of the treatment and food and I think you have a solid winner. Bottle of wine and candy left on the dresser. This B&B is privately owned for 13 years as of this writing. All the staff were very nice and accommodating. Ok, Baby, the parrot(?) wasn't always friendly until you give it a pet on the back of the neck :-) This was my first experience staying at a B&B so be aware some of my comments may not apply to you the reader. My first feeling was a little discomfort about staying in someone's house but the staff make you feel pretty welcomed. Breakfast is served at 9am and is a set menu which is understandable considering there's only 1 or 2 working the kitchen and dining area. Just to give you an idea of the servings, the common theme was a good healthy and hearty breakfast starting with either a fruit bowl or yogurt then a dish with eggs, meat and a carb. The meal always held until around 2pm or so. And in the evening there was always a plate of chocolate chip and white chocolate chip cookies along with a pitcher of some good sangria in the fridge in the common area kitchen. The room was very comfortable with a small flat screen TV and a couple of chairs in addition to the comfortable bed. The bathroom in the room was on the small side but very usable. Although the place is just off the main highway leading into Nellysford, it was over 30 mins from the big city in Charlottesville, so your choices for lunch and dinner were limited unless you went to the big city. If winery/meadery/distillery/brewery/cidery tours is your thing, they have plenty close by. I would recommend a stop at Hill Top winery/meadery just up the road. Overall, I would definitely recommend it. And if you decide to stay, give Baby a pet on the back of the neck and say "hey!" Just don't stick your finger in too quick or it may not come back to you! :-)

It's so nice and relaxing to stay here - we came for a reunion weekend at Washington & Lee, but ended up enjoying this lodging experience so much that it was a major reason for a wonderful weekend. And the breakfast every morning is so delicious - Amber is a wonderful chef, and so is Donna! There are a couple of hiking trails on the property itself plus there is good fishing in the lake (I caught a couple of nice bluegill thanks to Lisa's tip on the best fishing spot) and you can use kayaks, a paddle boat and a row boat as well. Each cabin also has a firepit, grill and picnic table. The property location is perfect as well and you're only a couple of miles from a Dollar General, grocery store, and most importantly wineries and breweries while still being in a really quiet place. There are couple of minor issues to keep in mind but don't let them stop you from staying here. The lighting in the cabin's living was a little dim so it could be a little hard to read at night if you don't move right next to a lamp. The beds were comfortable but the mattresses were just a little hard but that's just personal preference. Things were pretty quiet outside when we were there but I could see the lake getting a little busy if all four cabins were full and everyone wanted to use the lake at the same time. Also keep in mind that pets are allowed in most of the cabins and I believe people are supposed to keep their dogs on leashes but didn't always do so. Duane and Lisa are awesome people and provide the southern hospitality that you'd expect. A storm was coming the day we were supposed to check in and they emailed us to let us know we could check in earlier than usual that day or even the night before to make sure we stayed safe. I'd come back here for sure and highly recommend checking this place out.

We stayed in the Equestrian Room, which had one of the most beautiful bedrooms I have ever stayed in, with a homey smaller room immediately adjacent so that my daughter could have a little privacy. The complimentary breakfast served the next morning was better than any restaurant. A mammoth omelet that was as light as it was flavorful was complimented by mouth watering blueberry stuffed french toast that could have been a meal (or dessert) all by itself. Our hosts Iris and Patrick were polite, helpful, friendly but never intrusive. If you have business or vacation plans anywhere near Lexington, VA, you owe yourself a stay at the 1868 Magnolia House Inn.
