I Arrived at the Terraces at 5pm on Saturday May 9…read more I was told there was a problem with my pills between ECH and Terraces so could I have someone bring all my pills up to the Terraces. They also could NOT find a walker so they asked if someone could bring that as well. I had already realized that there were only 2 outlets in the room that would not work for the ice machine and compression machine. So I had them bring up my large outlet and surge compressor to plug everything into. When my friend arrived with all the stuff she called and told me she and some other people were out front because nobody would answer the bell. Since I didn't have my walker yet. I had to sit in my bed and scream. I need help until somebody finally came to the door and said, what do you need? And I said, people are stuck outside. Turns out the person monitoring the door decided to take a break. I was warned that there is only a skeleton crew available on the weekend. Little or no PT or OT. PT which is the main reason I was at The Terraces have some very good people but the policy is not to schedule specific times. That they need to be flexible because people have other things they need to do. So they can just tell you morning or afternoon. Four days had passed and I'd never seen a real towel. There are paper towels, but that's it. So when they said Thursday is the day for you to take your shower? I was like, okay? And since I didn't know what time PT would be because they never tell you, I thought I better hurry up and get it done. So I go in the bathroom, I wash my hair. So I used a diaper like a turbine on my head to collect the water from my hair. It actually worked pretty well. And then I finally got done I wiped dry with the paper towels all the rest of me. After all this someone brought me towels. That was the first day on Thursday that I ever saw a towel. There was a wheelchair in my room that was broken and I said, well, why don't you go get another wheelchair and she says, we don't have any more. This is their business to have equipment that is working. So now I have a defective wheelchair sitting in my room, taking up space. Once again, because PT can't organize anything. She stopped by at quarter to 10 asked if i had my pain pill. I told her no but she could just request one from the nurse. She said she'd be back at 10. She finally returned at 11:05. I yelled at her. She took real offense at that. She said she couldn't get back when she tried. That's just the way it is here she reiterated. We don't do schedules. She told me she wasn't here to give me a session now but to put me off until later again. I'd been waiting since 10AM. She said she'd have to get somebody else to work with me. I agreed. I realized how she operated. She would whirl in like a tornado. Start taping exercise diagrams on the walls and then say she would be back later at her convenience. I asked if they could give me a window for PT. 8-10 or 10-noon. She said they never start at 8 and that they couldn't do windows either. There is no end to the incompetency and inefficiencies at this facility. I'm making a comedy out of this but the reality is there are people in this facility that may be in life and death situations, and it is not a laughing matter for them. They have a whiteboard where you can put down pain control, when you had your last dose, when's the next one, what your pain level is when your pt schedule is etc. But nothing is filled in on them. This place is run by the seat of somebody's pants, I just don't know who's really in charge. There is a whole team of hard-working people at the bottom that are trying to do their best. They are the people that serve your meals. The wonderful Peter, who changes the ice all during the day for my knee is smiley, nice really cares. The people cleaning people, the cna's some of the nurses, but management just lets everything run helter, skelter. The PT when it happens is good. You just don't know when it's going to be Happen. All I can think of is the patients are too old to care. They just do what they're told when they're told, and they don't have any advocates. I don't fit into that mold. And there's the infamous red button. They have a handset at each bed, to operate the TV, and it has one big red button you can push if you need help. You can kind of only push it once it's either like on or off. There is no two-way communication. Then you sit and wait. You could wait an hour. If you need help going to the bathroom, good luck. There are signs all over the walls. Call, don't fall, press the red button. What a joke. I think the last scheduling issue with the PT woman was the end of everything as far as I was concerned. There would be little or no PT on the weekend so I left at noon.

He was incredibly thorough during our tour--no rushing, no skipping over details. He patiently answered every question and made sure we clearly understood how the community operates. His calm, knowledgeable presence immediately built trust. The CNAs and nurses were equally impressive. They were attentive, compassionate, and consistently greeted residents with genuine smiles. What really stood out was how client-centered they were. Every staff member we passed made eye contact, said "hello," and acknowledged each resident by name--as if each person truly mattered. It's rare to find a place where excellent care, kindness, and professionalism all come together so naturally. This community exceeded our expectations in every way, and we left feeling confident, grateful, and comforted knowing that residents here are treated with dignity and heartfelt care.

He was there for over 50 years and it was a daily reminder of our mom who passed away a couple years earlier. But it was necessary as he was having trouble with stairs and was at an increasingly high risk of falling. The first few months were predictably difficult. But he quickly made connections with other residents and eventually started thinking of the Avant as home. He was treated so well by the staff. They were unfailingly attentive and thoughtful. They looked after him and cared for him better than we could've possible hoped. When his health took a bad turn or he fell, they were on top of it immediately. They contacted us right away and gave us thoughtful guidance at every step based on their considerable experience. Li Li, Trish, and the entire staff are very professional, knowledgeable and kind. The facilities are clean, modern, and well cared for. From what we heard from dad, the food was consistently great. My family and I highly recommend the Avant without any reservations.

Mom was worried they would have to go to "The Other Side," also know as the memory care unit. Other residents say things to scare them about this arrangement. Dad loved the swimming pool in the apartment living, but once he 'crashed' into another swimmer who yelled at him, he no longer swam. Thus, my mom was ready to move out and live in their own home. Dad passed away a year ago and Mom, who is 93, is happy to live in her home. For me, I live 3 hrs away and always worry. I wish she continued to live at the Avant. She is isolated in her home, doesn't have transportation, but is happy to walk to her downtown. She is of sound mind, so I don't have any say, but that doesn't mean I don't worry. The Avant is a place I would live in the future and now that Mom is on her own, I think she would be more receptive to making friends with the other residents.

Not only is the food superb, but it is very much tailored to healing . Their PT and OT teams were on also fabulous. I learned so much what to do and very importantly not to do with my new knee . I learned so much that it was not a problem to continue these exercises at home. The staff recommended FOCUS as a Home Health company. They are absolutely excellent, thorough, reliable , the PT and OT and nurse have helped me tremendously. The nursing staff and the CNA's were so very good :they paid attention to medications very well. Not only that it was the right medication, but that it was the right time and the right dosage. I had my first postop appointment during my stay at the Vi and they arranged transportation that was quite helpful!! My two weeks there gave me the best basis for my new knee being unnoticeable and un painful very soon!

Chuck B. Morgan Hill…read moreNov 14, 2025 About 15 years ago, while living in Sunnyvale, Ca, my aging mother was suffering from dementia and other age-related problems that had gone beyond my ability to provide the level of care she needed and deserved. I was fortunate to discover Madera Villa, a small, welcoming facility with around 17 rooms, each furnished and complete with its own bathroom. The staff there provided her with constant, loving care and attention until she peacefully passed away from her illness. I have carried gratitude for that experience ever since. Fast forward 15 years to March of 2025. My wife of 34 years was now struggling with dementia, mobility issues, and recovering from a broken arm after a fall. Once again, I reached a point where I could no longer meet her growing care needs on my own. Living about 30 miles south of Madera Villa, I searched for a nearby facility but found none that gave me a good feeling. Then I called Madera Villa--and to my delight, I was greeted by Allan Tuan, the facility administrator, and his wonderful assistant, Sarah. Both of them had been there when my mother was a resident fifteen years earlier. When I walked through those doors again after all those years, it felt less like entering a care facility and more like returning to a place of comfort and trust. Seeing Allan and Sarah still there filled me with a deep sense of reassurance. It reminded me that some places truly hold on to what matters--people who care for others not because it's their job but because it's who they are. Even in her condition, my wife recognized Allan and Sarah from visits long ago and connected with them instantly. Their compassion, attentiveness, and genuine kindness made her feel safe and loved. During her stay, she became friends not only with the entire staff but also with several residents. I started calling Sarah the "sweetheart lady of Madera Villa," and the title fits her perfectly. Madera Villa stands out as a place where warmth comes before profit and where every resident is treated like family. I cannot think of a better place for a loved one who needs care and community.
