I did not feel good putting my father in a "home", but the staff and everyone there is so nice my dad whom had dementia towards the end of his life at 92 really did enjoy his time with them at villa siena!!! I highly recommend this senior care center. My Aunt Marie is at Siena now as well, and she misses her apartment that she loved, but she kept falling there and broke her hip. Then she fell again so we who weren't near her town needed to place her. She has good insurance so she was able to get in. She misses her apartment of course but she is safer now and loves reading scripture as well as many books they have in multiple libraries on site at Siena! This place just is one of the better places.

The property is well maintained. Redwood Villa is family-owned and run, and that caring atmosphere is prevalent throughout. My dad, who was fairly independent, had several medical emergencies, and staff was extremely accommodating as well as always keeping an eye out for him. We needed some modifications to his apartment, such as a cut-out in the tub so he could step in easily after hip surgery, and it was no problem. Staff was always extremely pleasant; there was never a 'honeymoon' period where it seems great and then diminishes over time...it was always great. We enjoyed the events held during the year such as the Christmas party, New Years party, Mothers Day dinner, etc. It's not a skilled nursing facility, and that was perfect for our needs. Residents do have assistants who come in to help with their various needs, but that's not provided directly through Redwood Villa. Their rates are extremely reasonable, and I can't recommend them highly enough.

This review is from Jan. 2023…read more I write it - long overdue - for you to make sure there's been a change in management and underlying grossly negligent systemic conditions threatening patient safety since then. It was an incredibly dangerous stay. CA should shut the place down if those conditions persist. 1. Broken blood pressure machines. My parent needed his B/P checked several times a day, to adjust his medications. No one told me the blood pressure machine was broken. It was a traveling nurse who informed me to bring one in that actually works. 2. Failure to administer oxygen My parent was short of breath and needed oxygen one night and into the next day. He pleaded for oxygen. A traveling nurse told me all they had to do was text the doctor for oxygen tanks in his room - but no one did that. Stanford hospital finally intervened, getting him in-room oxygen tanks. But he never should've suffered like that. 3. Threatened discharges The Terraces threatened to discharge my parent for "refusing" to do PT. He never refused - he wanted to do PT! The PT notes clearly stated it was "too dangerous" for him to do the PT. The PTs had to help us fight the discharge. 4. Dairy given to lactose intolerant They regularly gave him food full of dairy, when he was marked as lactose intolerant. This made him very sick each time, increased his weakness and worsened his underlying health conditions. 5. Warehoused him For 2 weeks, no one informed the family of his medical condition preventing PT. Just left him lying in bed. After 2 weeks, a doctor said he'd adjust his medications. After another week, the doctor offered to increase the medications because he wasn't improving. But he wasn't improving because he'd never received the first dose! In increasing his medication, the doctor never checked whether he actually received the first dose level. Totally dangerous. Again - a traveling nurse was the one who checked. 4 weeks later, he started receiving the medication and could start the PT program. 6. Nurses didn't follow doctor orders Because nurses weren't following the doctor's orders, I taped handwritten signs to the wall over his bed, stating the doctor's orders in large print. My parent had to repeatedly ask the nurses to read my posted signs. In conclusion, if nothing is changed since 1/23, The Terraces should be shut down. It should be reopened ONLY under new management and AFTER it fixes the underlying systemic problems inflicting gross negligence in medical care on its elderly fragile patient population.

I have never encountered a community with such an extraordinary team. From the moment we arrived,…read morethe warmth and professionalism were evident. Administrator Andrii set the tone. He was incredibly thorough during our tour--no rushing, no skipping over details. He patiently answered every question and made sure we clearly understood how the community operates. His calm, knowledgeable presence immediately built trust. The CNAs and nurses were equally impressive. They were attentive, compassionate, and consistently greeted residents with genuine smiles. What really stood out was how client-centered they were. Every staff member we passed made eye contact, said "hello," and acknowledged each resident by name--as if each person truly mattered. It's rare to find a place where excellent care, kindness, and professionalism all come together so naturally. This community exceeded our expectations in every way, and we left feeling confident, grateful, and comforted knowing that residents here are treated with dignity and heartfelt care.

I felt like she was not safe at the previous place due to lack of consistent supervision for all the residents.- not just my mom. I didn't want to risk my mom's already fragile state, waiting for them to fix the problems and lack of good staffing. We found Sunnyside Gardens through my mom's hospice provider (and hospice should know - they have to visit all their patients in memory care or skilled-nursing facilities). Sunnyside is not flashy -- it's the PEOPLE that make it beyond amazing. I have never found my mother (or any other resident) alone or unsupervised at Sunnyside. The staff is super friendly, and they all jump in to help each other with the residents. They are completely informative and prompt whenever there may be an issue with my mom's health - and they also tell hospice, so I don't have to do anything. I have never been kept in the loop like this - it's really caring and compassionate. I love my mom's room - it's got its own sliding glass door (alarmed) so I can take my mom outside in a gated patio/garden area. The laundry and cleaning schedules are clearly posted in her bathroom, and I've never seen my mom's room look dirty or messy. It could be that they keep it clean since she is never really in her room except to sleep! She is kept with her friends (other residents) in the activity area, eating in the dining area, or on trips with the staff. She had no issues fitting in and becoming part of the Sunnyside Gardens family. I have said it many times in the months my mom has been there - the staff is amazing - every single one of them, from the executive director to the facilities manager, from the memory care director to the caregivers.

The staff was very kind and caring, as well as conscientious about keeping me well informed about her health and well being. They would even send me updates and photos when they knew I would be traveling and unable to visit. And when my mom was hospitalized, staff members made a point to visit her. The facility is clean and well maintained. Sunnyside Gardens is also small enough that the staff know all the residents well, and residents always appeared well groomed and cared for. She needed more stimulation and a social setting but also needed supervision and verbal cuing for some activities. After personally touring over a dozen facilities in the Bay Area, I thought that Palo Alto Commons was the best of the lot. The buildings are always clean and smell fresh. Some of the other facilities I saw were pretty bad. They either had an odor, were visibly dirty or the residents looked unkept. Palo Alto Commons was just a better all around environment. I was fortunate to discover Madera Villa, a small, welcoming facility with around 17 rooms, each furnished and complete with its own bathroom. The staff there provided her with constant, loving care and attention until she peacefully passed away from her illness. I have carried gratitude for that experience ever since. Fast forward 15 years to March of 2025. My wife of 34 years was now struggling with dementia, mobility issues, and recovering from a broken arm after a fall. Once again, I reached a point where I could no longer meet her growing care needs on my own. Living about 30 miles south of Madera Villa, I searched for a nearby facility but found none that gave me a good feeling. Then I called Madera Villa--and to my delight, I was greeted by Allan Tuan, the facility administrator, and his wonderful assistant, Sarah. Both of them had been there when my mother was a resident fifteen years earlier. When I walked through those doors again after all those years, it felt less like entering a care facility and more like returning to a place of comfort and trust. Seeing Allan and Sarah still there filled me with a deep sense of reassurance. It reminded me that some places truly hold on to what matters--people who care for others not because it's their job but because it's who they are. Even in her condition, my wife recognized Allan and Sarah from visits long ago and connected with them instantly. Their compassion, attentiveness, and genuine kindness made her feel safe and loved. During her stay, she became friends not only with the entire staff but also with several residents. I started calling Sarah the "sweetheart lady of Madera Villa," and the title fits her perfectly. Madera Villa stands out as a place where warmth comes before profit and where every resident is treated like family. I cannot think of a better place for a loved one who needs care and community.
