This review is for the restaurant Veranda as we did not stay in the Villa d'Este hotel. We came here for dinner on Friday night along with two other couples. Upon arrival we were told that the men needed to be wearing jackets. I wish that our hotel had told us because my husband had packed one, but luckily the restaurant keeps spare jackets on site for just this situation. The large dining room is incredibly old school with beautiful brass dining chairs laden in blue and yellow striped fabric. When they brought out the wine list I thought it was a joke because it was the size of a dictionary! For dinner I had the beet tartare and the veal filet. The soy marinated tofu was a little bit of an odd flavor combined the beet dish but besides that it was quite good. My husband started with the gnocchi and it may have been the best dish of the night, it was dynamite. In my opinion, my veal filet was better than my husbands beef filet and I also really enjoyed the petite eggplant parmigiana that came with it. Soufflé and ice creams for dessert were a big hit, but I was especially pleased because I asked if they had some dark chocolates off menu and they brought me out a beautiful assortment that tasted as good as they looked. Where to begin with Villa D'Este? Although we've visited Lake Como four times before, this was our first stay here--and it exceeded every expectation!. We've stayed at two other five-star hotels on the lake, but Villa D'Este is in a league of its own. We have a deep appreciation for history and aesthetics, and we were completely taken by the grandeur of this property. This 500-year-old palace is maintained to absolute perfection. Every corner tells a story, and the historic gardens are simply breathtaking--truly some of the most beautiful in the world. The staff combine warmth with impeccable professionalism, making you feel both cared for and celebrated. The food was outstanding, and one of the highlights of our stay was a Sunday evening dinner at their gorgeous Veranda lakeside restaurant with live music--a small band with an amazing saxophonist created an atmosphere of pure magic. I was dreaming of staying at this place for years. And for our wedding, we thought Lake Como Italy would be the perfect place... WRONG. Housekeeping or whomever entered my room at some point stole an expensive monumental gift from my family, a Van Cleef gold bracelet. My husband even had his wedding ring go missing and re-appear after we started complaining. Unfortunately, never my stuff. They also took my replica diamond engagement ring, (which looks like a real engagement ring). I was probably targeted from the beginning. I had my wedding dress steamed by the hotel and hanging in our room. Unfortunately, I traveled with nicer jewelry than I usually travel with. But with it being my wedding I brought pieces with me that made me feel beautiful. First mistake... I'm lucky I never took off my engagement ring but if I ever left it in that room, that would've surely gone missing too. The hotel falsely promises such high service, meanwhile their own staff is stealing. At a hotel of this caliber, there's a false sense of safety and service that I ensure you isn't present. It wasn't just one piece that I could've misplaced, my relipica engagement ring being missing shows how I was targeted. The manager of the hotel emailed us this nonsense "Villa d'Este reputation is very solid as well as the behaviour of its employees, some of them having been with us for a long time, and an accusation without any proof of evidence is simply not possible". I will never stay at this establishment again. Being from Los Angeles, I have many friends who have stayed here and/or are familiar with the hotel. I will surely warn them of my horrible stay. And I hope this review WARNS YOU to STEER CLEAR of Villa D'este. There are plenty of other beautiful properties on the lake. My memories are ruined, our photos haunting. We spent so much money on this shady hotel and I thoroughly regret ever stepping foot onto the property. The staff resents their guests!!! It is expensive but in my opinion worth every penny. Whether you are sitting on your terrace, having a drink outside by the lake, enjoying the bountiful complimentary breakfast buffet, or dancing to the pianist by the lake after dinner at the lovely Veranda Restaurant, this place is enchanting. The 25 acres of meticulously maintained grounds are a pleasure to stroll through. You can walk up several hundred yards along slow falling fountains to a seventeenth century statue of Hercules and a mangificent view of the hotel and lake below. It was so beautiful just to soak up the ambience that we didn't even have time to use the tennis courts or putting green. You will not find a better staff in any other great hotel, they will go out of their way to please you. It is also incredible to me how every inch of the hotel from the rooms to the hallways and public areas are so well maintained. Not a stain, tear or anything out of place anywhere. I will say, in these times of businesses struggling to hire enough people there were some signs of harried staff, I had to ask for coffee at least a couple of times on every occasion at breakfast before it arrived at all. And although the Veranda has a Michelin Star, it is the ambience and service that deserves the star, as the food is good but not life changing or exceptional. Having said that, I would not hesitate to return to this extraordinary haven of tranquility and excellence that has history well beyond its 150 years as a hotel originally for royalty. read more

Gorgeous grounds, easy location, friendly staff. For the reputation we expected a bit more. One thing that didn't sit well was the absolute fact that they do everything in their power to get you to not leave the resort and to only book through their concierge services. I understand how hotels / resorts work but in our case time and time again we noticed exaggerations about everywhere else's pricing, our requests being "difficult to fulfill if you try to do that", etc. for the location, if you wish to explore other parts of lake como it's fairly easy. Suggestions: 1) book Uber black to and from (half the cost and nicer cars then the Mercedes service the hotel offers for $290 each way. Uber black coat is only about $120 from the hotel to the airport and he even followed my bf to drop off the Vespa in town on the way 2) you only need about a day on the grounds of Villa D Este to fully explore that area (we booked several nights and decided after night one we should've stayed elsewhere after that as other than the hotel events there wasn't much to do) 3) take the Cernobbio ferry into Como and rent a Vespa for 24 hours $120 ish from a local shop and drive your way around the lake visiting the other towns along the way, board with the Vespa in Tremmezzo and spend a day or half day in Bellagio and stop in Nesso on the way back for dinner. Pro's 1) obviously stunnnnnning views 2) extremely clean 3) sweetest staff ever as long as you're not asking about anything you can book outside of their concierge Con's 1) the food is exactly the same at all restaurants in the property, mostly American grill / steakhouse menu. 2) boat tours were double / triple / quadruple the price if you booked through hotel, we were actually told on multiple occasions how impossible it would be to book a tour last min or to be able to get a Vespa. Both of which were easier than in the states even 3) the bed was the most uncomfortable bed I've stayed in ever in my life lol (back actually hurt everyday we were there and magically got better the minute we left) read more

***400th Review!!!*** Hooray! It has been just about two years of Yelping for me. Early on, I didn't think I'd even make it to my 40th Yelp review, but here I am now, with 400 hundred reviews and so many wonderful friends and loyal followers too! Thank YOU! I can't think of a better place for a 400th review than where we spent our honeymoon, just a few years ago. Although "the Villa", as it's often referred to, is secluded and offers plenty of privacy, don't be surprised if you have some celebrity encounters. George Clooney has a home nearby and is often seen dining at the main restaurant. He was there last summer with former President Obama and his family, along with U2's Bono. Chrissy Teigen and John Legend tied the knot at the Villa. International economic and political conferences are also held here, so plenty of world leaders roam the same grounds too. On our visit, there was a scattering of Americans, with a predominance of Russian oligarchs and their counterparts from China. When we first entered through the gates​ of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, I was literally awestruck! It's 25-acres tastefully comprised of historic fountains, statues, and lush landscaped gardens. You could easily spend an hour just taking leisurely walks around exploring the perfectly manicured grounds every day, which is what we did. The interior is truly palatial. The grand staircase and the public areas are the definitions​ of "WOW". The Renaissance-style furbished rooms are enormous. Ours was the largest 1-bedroom hotel room I've ever stayed in. It came with a huge walk-in closet and a massive bathroom with a shower and soaking tub. If you're only into modern/contemporary spaces, you might find this a bit dated or antiquated. I prefer to think of it as a place with pristinely preserved European history and flair. It was built in 1565​, started functioning as a hotel in 1873, and has a long proud history. We immensely enjoyed the buffet​ breakfast that was included every morning during our week-long stay. It easily trumps any buffet breakfast I've had anywhere in the world. It was bountiful and lavishly presented with high-quality​ foods and came with beyond stellar service to boot. We had some special requests which were accommodated​, without question. They're there to please you, and you feel it! We'd literally return just to experience their buffet breakfasts again. Seriously! The breakfast is held in their elegant main restaurant, Veranda (jacket and tie required at dinner). It's nice to have a civilized breakfast sometimes in a place where people actually dress up for breakfast, and not look as if they've just rolled right out of bed. If you want a change-up from dining on the premises, take a short walk into town. There's even a local deli that serves up amazing and very authentic Italian food. But don't miss out on having pre-dinner drinks outdoors by the floating pool that literally floats on Lake Como! It's a great place to take in the stunning lakeside views and meet some super interesting people. The service at the Villa is PHENOMENAL! Hubby is really into service, and he loved this place so much that every year he talks about returning. I have other places on the Bucket List to check-off before returning so soon, but I clearly see why he loves it so much. During the entire week, every single employee was courteous​, friendly and frequently referred to us by our names. We rarely encounter this caliber of service, particularly in the U.S. The beautiful Lake Region of Northern Italy is without question, a destination spot, and if you're in Lake Como, the Villa d' Este, an ultra-luxe world-famous​ hotel is THE place to stay! It's located in Cernobbio, a small quiet lake town in Lake Como. We took boat trips every day to quaint historic neighboring lake towns​ and meandered through idyllic Italian streets and alleyways. One of our highlights was the town of Bellagio, where Hubby had a spaghetti dish that he still raves about today. As for lodging though, no place in this region comes remotely close​ to the Villa d' Este! Of course, you can expect to "invest" serious $$$$$, but it was our honeymoon, and we wanted to start our new life off right. A stay here is definitely worth a splurge, at least once in your lifetime. You only live once, right?!? The Villa remains my #1 favorite hotel​​ stays in my lifetime, thus far, and Lake Como is my #1 favorite place​ in the world to visit. Villa d'Este is located in Cernobbio, directly on Lake Como, and is surrounded by 25 acres of fabulous gardens, with statues and beautiful flowers. It was built in 1568 as the summer residence of Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, and subsequently transformed into a luxury hotel in 1873, becoming a favorite destination for the European aristocracy. Though we're not yet considered European aristocracy (nor American aristocracy!), we were able to stroll through the hotel and grounds and dine at one of their alfresco spots for lunch. Their website photos show meticulously landscaped grounds, and the villa does not disappoint in this regard. The gardens, villa and lakeside location are spectacular. I wish the same could be said for lunch, as the food was adequate at best, and considering the premium prices, somewhat of a letdown. That said, the venue is spectacular, and Villa d'Este is well worth a visit. read more

Villa D'Este is truly a 5 Star Hotel. It is located in Lake Como, one of the most beautiful areas in the world and the grounds and views are simply magnificent. We enjoy eating at all their restaurants and find the service exceptional. If there is anything that a guest may have an issue with, the management will go out of their way to make it right. Case in point, Michele Luccarini, the Maitre D'Hotel, followed up on a minor issue we had at one of their restaurants and could not have been more gracious. Besides contacting us to address the issue, he invited us to a complimentary aperitif @ Bar Canova and took the time to come greet us in person. Truly 1st Class! read more

We ate at the grill, which is not their main restaurant but a more casual one they have still adjacent to the lake. Everything was excellent, food, service, ambience. My wife got fish which was good, and the truffle sweet potato fries were excellent. Soup and salad apps were good. Steak I got was good but doesn't match top steakhouses. read more

This place is beautiful! The estate is surrounded by lovely fountains (the Water Organ being my favorite) , mythological statues, and depictions of eagles representing the d'Este's family crest. Every architectural masterpiece has a story; from the adventures of Gods like Hercules to the successes of the Roman empire. One of the best hotels in the world. The attention to detail is impeccable in every aspect of the hotel. Landscapers are out early in the morning making sure the extensive gardens (which are gorgeous) and pathways are perfectly manicured. The concierge knows your names prior to even meeting you. The concierge will arrange dinner reservations and any types of excursions/transportation that you can think of. Welcome snacks and champagne were waiting for us in our room upon arrival. The breakfast spreads served in your room is must do and the breakfast buffet located on the first floor of the main hotel is amazing. The restaurants located at the hotel combine extraordinary culinary delights with a service that is second to none. The floating pool is definitely a great spot to relax and enjoy poolside cocktails. We rented a boat for a day which was one of the highlights of our stay and gave us a chance to explore the lake on our own. In the evening enjoy a nightcap while listening to the the pianist who plays each evening lakeside. They have a great fitness center where you can workout/swim laps and there is a spa located next door where we enjoyed a couples massage. Can't wait to go back. Came here to celebrate a friend's wedding, so happy that it worked out to visit and stay at the hotel for a few days. The property is absolutely beautiful and our room was spacious and comfortable and the bathroom was glamorous (chandelier etc)! The floating pool is so much fun and refreshing in the summer heat. Regarding the wedding, the ceremony space and the space for reception is magnificent! One of the most beautiful of 5 star hotels I have seen. Would highly recommend! Villa d'Este is a renown five star resort in Chernobbio, on lake Como. The main villa was built in 16th century by a Catholic Cardinal, who acquired the land from a monastic order, whose monastery still stands in the gardens. Since then the ownership passed between several renowned aristocratic families including the Pino spouses, Caroline of Brunswick, and it was briefly rented by a Russian empress. The villa was reconstructed several times and therefore boasts the finest art and architecture from the five centuries of Italian history. Its considerable gardens are also a work of art, comprising many unique landscape patterns and over five centuries' old trees. On the hill side overlooking the lake there are what appear to be the ruins of an ancient fortress. Yet these were artificially constructed in 19th century as a gift to General Domenico Pino, famous for his role in Spanish and Russian campaigns during Napoleonic Wars, to represent the scenery he was fighting on. The hotel actually comprises several villas, with two major buildings that house most guest rooms and a few smaller dwellings to be rented as private villas. All rooms are designed distinctly from one another. Most are decorated with antique furniture and valuable art. And of course many offer the magnificent views over the lake. Most standard rooms are relatively small, but those of the junior suite type and beyond possess the true aristocratic grandeur. The main restaurant offers traditional Italian delicacies, prepared to among the best standards in north Italy, and indeed in the world. Their head chef used to cook for Pope John Paul II and I was told that Elton John was so impressed with their dishes that he had his cook undergo training with them. Indeed, in my experience their risottos were probably the best I ever tried. Such magnificent historic appeal and the modern luxury are combined in an extraordinarily pleasant setting on lake Como. For these reasons, Villa d'Este became a favourite of many rich and famous individuals. Such sophistication of course comes at a price, and a rather considerable one. The junior suite would set you back about a 1000 Euros a day in high season. Nevertheless, I will make my best effort come back for a short vacation here again in the future. And if can't afford the stay, it's still worth visiting the outstanding restaurant, which will also permit you to explore the whole brilliant territory of the villa. read more

Beautiful Views. Rooms are very small, and they gave us an upgrade, and still very small. The floating pool is great, you can spend hours out there. The hotel piano bar outside is very nice, but takes 20 minutes to order a drink. The staff is running around, but not sure what you are doing. It's Villa d'Este, what else would you expect except 5 stars? It has been a few decades since I have been on the grounds of Villa d'Este but one of the most memorable memories was swimming in the floating pool. Their indoor pool is quite nice as well should you be visiting outside the summer season. If you are looking for great service and great ambiance on Lago di Como, Grand Hotel Villa d'Este is one of your choices. When booking be on the look-out for special events such as the Concourse d'Elegance ... if you are lucky to be there at that time you will be able to see some of the world's most magnificient cars. You might also see movie stars and foreign dignitaries as this is the place for them to hang out. read more

We stayed here 35 years ago for three days on a splurge for our vacation. It was worth the price. We came back again just for lunch with some friends on a splendid day on Lake Como this week. Our lunch was one to remember - the food, the setting, the service (impeccable!) and of course, the price. It's not hard to spend €100 per person for lunch out on the veranda, but we have never had a more splendid setting or better meal in all our travels through Europe. read more
