We spent a good block of time shopping for hot work clothes for me. The lovely ladies at Wal-Mart kindly told us that Maurice's was the spot to go but they were closing in an hour so to haul ass. So haul ass we did...all the way across the street. So we get there and we essentially have the place to ourselves. We're immediately greeted by someone who we will later find out is named Kelsey. We tell her we're just looking and she goes about her business. A half hour later, we kinda hijacked Kelsey into being a personal shopper and she WORKED. IT. OUT. Homegirl picked out some hot clothes and she was soooooo sweet, friendly, and had great, fun energy. Turns out we kept the store open for about a half hour after closing. But it was so much fun to have the place to ourselves AND to have our own personal shopper. Anyway, the best part was after returning home ($400 in the hole) and unpacking all my clothes finding a note from Kelsey saying how much fun she had picking out my clothes and wishing me luck with my new job. This is a tough review to write because as a mall, this one is rather small and there's not a lot…read moregoing on; but there is not a lot of population in this area to financially support a huge shopping mecca that you'd maybe find in Albany, Syracuse, Kingston, or even Binghamton. So you have to set your expectations correctly. Within 20 miles or more, there's really nothing else like a mall. Some of the stores are going to be a bit weird, or will go out of business after a few months, or whatever. As it is, this mall served its purpose; something for us to do for an hour or so to kill some time when it was raining. There was a book store that was not bad, and a foreign market which had some unique foods. If I lived in the area, I'm sure I'd be dropping the kids off here to run around and hang out for a while.

It was a strange time. Since then, retailers have learned what works in a brick and mortar and what doesn't on. Most shopping centers bounced back, even if it was often with different types of shops. I'm really not sure what is going on here. The food court only had a few options open and so many empty booths. The mall itself was just dead and most of the people I saw coming and going were patrons of the crunch fitness. I thought perhaps it could have been the time of day that I visited, but it was incredibly busy outside, so I doubt it. Being a historic landmark, I really hope they figure out how to reconfigure this mall and increase business soon.

It's definitely great for the University students to have so many things located in one Plaza, or for anyone who doesn't drive for that matter, and people who want to take a bus and do all your shopping in one proverbial fell swoop. This is a great destination because there are literally so many options for eating and shopping in here. Parking isn't bad, but you might have to walk a little bit for some of the more popular stuff.

I actually enjoyed shopping at Lycoming Mall a few weeks ago during a trip to Pennsylvania. I've been to Susquehanna Valley Mall, which is just slightly smaller. Lycoming Mall has a bit of everything, including Bon Ton (which I prefer over Macy's - a chain that is not well liked here in Chicago) and Dick's Sporting Goods and mall staples like Gap and Victoria's Secret. It's pretty much a one-stop shopping destination. The layout is simpler than Susquehanna Valley. This mall won't thrill you as it is what it is... a suburban mall.

It's over at the Lycoming Mall and now is the time to begin looking at the future. The loss of Jr. anchors, including Old Navy and soon Dick's will only accelerate the malls end. What's left? Burlington and Books A Million are the best-known remaining stores. Empty storefronts dominate all wings of the mall now, with the Bon-Ton wing now being almost empty. The empty storefronts of Gap, Old Navy, Hot Topic, Arby's, and f.y.e. all remain identifiable, a reminder of this mall's better times. Ownership has not been keeping up with maintenance, as the parking lot has several areas blocked off and water damage is beginning to become more visible in several places. The area surrounding the mall has started to rebound after several tough years, with replacements coming in for Gander Outdoors, Grizzly Industrial, Pier 1, and Toys R Us. This makes the property attractive for redevelopment. What will happen to the mall? Demolition. Walmart would be an obvious option for a redevelopment, as the Williamsport area lacks a Walmart Supercenter and the current store in Montoursville has no room for expansion. Some portion of the mall and Burlington could remain depending on how creative future ownership can be. I can remember when this was one of the good malls that would be a special trip to shop at. Sadly, those days are over, like the Lycoming Mall.

The only thing that isn't so well maintained would have to be the restrooms in the food court. The food court is also quite small and only has a limited selection, which is one of the biggest reasons that I have to give this mall a four star review only. Not only that, but a majority of the food court seems to now be occupied by an empty store. Why they don't attempt to re-open more food locations is beyond me. However, despite what I said about the food court, the Chinese buffet in the mall is excellent, so definitely be sure to check it out if you're going up there. All in all, this is a very well maintained mall that is worth the visit if you're nearby.

There is something kind of beautiful about these decaying palaces of commerce in this era of late stage capitalism. I can't quite put my finger on it. For someone who grew up going to shopping malls in the 1980s it's kind of like walking through a Bruce Springstein song. It is hard to comprehend the juxtaposition of decay and scrappy mom-and-pop stores with the few remaining national and international retailers who maintain slick storefronts in the building despite all odds. Go for the pinball. Stay for the weirdness. Eat elsewhere. And be careful of the potholes. I do hope Wyoming Valley mall is able to pull itself out of its death spiral. Little is sadder to a kid from the 80s than a dead mall. But of course we also know that nothing lives forever. For that matter, who wants to live forever?
