We stumbled across Fondü-Hüsli and saw the charming outdoor seating area. There was a fun Christmas…read moretree in the middle and a lot of seating, with fur and blankets. The menu for outside is pretty simple, with four different fondue options (classic, champagne, paprika, and herb flavored) as well as a few salad and drink options. Once we were seated, we were greeted by a friendly waiter named Adam. While the menu was all in German, Adam very patiently explained all of the different dishes on the menu to us. We decided on ordering the champagne fondue and herb fondue, which both serve two people. The food came pretty quickly and was served with bread and potatoes. We ordered the two fondue pots for four people, but in hindsight, it was more than enough. Both fondues were very good; however, I prefer the champagne option as it was slightly less salty. I would still recommend both these options and thought the fondue was excellent. The texture and consistency was very smooth and did not feel too heavy. Overall, I had a great experience here. The one note that I will make about the place is that it was a little on the pricier side, but that is to be expected. I would definitely recommend stopping by this restaurant of you are in Thun for the day.

November 13, 2015 Paris shooting took place as we were having dinner here…read more We missed the unpretentious old Au Vieux Valais. The current owner did brighten up the place. Touristy is not necessarily a dirty word for a tourist region. There are now variations of Fondue on the menu that sound appealing. Croûte au fromage was served only in deluxe (ham, egg and tomatoes) version. It was decent. But Méringue with chocolate, seriously? An example of cultural difference. Waiting list for walk-ins is not a norm here. People take all the time they want to enjoy their food. The check is given only upon request. It is impossible to estimate waiting time for the next seating. A year ago, we came in and were told by a server that no seats available. So we moved on. But the owner ran after us outside and told us to come back in 15 minutes. He really wanted more business. When we were back, there were a few tables to choose. We walked in the other day for lunch. The owner said nothing available. One group (at least) was about to leave. And the kitchen was supposed to be open until 3pm. Strange that the owner didn't offer any other possibilities this time. They have apparently become popular. If you know what you want, a place a few steps away serves traditional dishes that are authentic and reasonably priced. Most restaurants in town don't have Raclette on a daily basis, though. Or you can ask a French speaking person to make a reservation for you. (Online reservation service is not an option yet. A cultural preference. Not due to the availability of technologies.) Foodwise, they are not a bad choice.

Full of locals with one table remaining that didn't have a reserved sign! Luck, pure luck. We were the only English speaking people in the place...the rest locals which in our estimation is a great sign. The inside is charming and full of warmth. We ordered a Plat du Jour which consisted of a small green salad, pan fried veal cutlets and fries & a grilled pork chop served with Rosti and a side salad. The salads and bread appeared. While the salads were simple they were beautiful. A delicious vinaigrette that made one want to just keep eating lettuce! I saved a bit of mine so that I could dip my veal in if need be. Didn't need it but it was good on it. The veal was cooked to perfection. The fries were addictive. We both tried but both had to leaves some fries. Portions were very nice size. Le Mazot is not a large restaurant. It probably seats about 30 inside and has an outdoor area that can accommodate about the same. On our visit both areas were full. One lady, possibly the owner, worked the whole area. She was great. Highly recommend making a reservation for lunch or dinner. It is fantastic.

Cheval - or horse meat - is a specialty of the house, so having never tried it, my colleagues and I opted to share an entree of cheval tartare as an appetizer. It came generously proportioned, a mound of finely chopped meat which was very tender and smooth. But it was hard to determine the true taste of the meat as it was heavily spiced and seasoned. It wasn't bad but it wasn't really memorable either. I'll probably stick with a beef tartare moving forward. On the other hand, their cheese fondue was memorable! A big pot of molten and winy cheese, long-handled forks, plenty of good crusty bread, and a couple of bottles of the local red made this a fully satisfying and convivial treat on a frosty December evening in Switzerland. The place filled quickly with locals and became a very cheery and festive night. Great fun!
