March 2013: John, Master Rodrigo Cruz and Master George Broyles at Viera Soo Bahk Do

Viera Soo Bahk Do, newly established in September 2012, is located at the Viera Regional Community Center. Master Rodrigo Cruz holds a 5th degree black belt and has been training in the traditional Korean Martial Art of Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan for 22 years. Recently, I was vacationing in Central Florida this past spring and contacted Master Cruz. Since I also train in the art of Soo Bahk Do in NY, I contacted Master Cruz and asked if I could visit and train with him and his students for an evening. He generously granted me permission and we stretched, performed basic hand and kicking techniques, forms as well as some finishing exercises. This evening of training was an evening well spent. Master Cruz is an original student of Hyun Chul Hwang, the current Grandmaster of Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan. (Please google Grandmaster Hwang). His expertise and training is second to none. Children as well as adults can all benefit from this type of martial arts training which includes basic techniques, self defense, conditioning, discipline, philosophy and overall well being. I recommend his class for all interested parties. Please contact Master Cruz for more information and perhaps participate in a trial class. This could be the best decision for you, your child or anyone interested in learning the Korean art of Soo Bahk Do. "SOO BAHK!!!"

She started training with him 11 years ago in the after school program. Unfortunately, now only evening classes are available, no more after school program. But we like it even better: it's less students and those that are there receive lots of attention. Note: this is not the right place if you are soft and discipline is not a priority or if you are just looking for something to do without commitment. Classes are held 3 nights per week ( Mon- Wed) 6 pm beginners and intermediate, and 7 pm is advanced. Weapons class is also offered in the dojo on Thursdays. This is the best thing I've done for my kids! So, thank you!

I figured we'd try it out, but was not expecting much. We are two months in now and I cannot say enough good things about them. My kids are 7 and 9 and we have noticed such positive changes in their attitudes, respectfulness, willingness and desire to help, responsibility, and level of committment. Mr. Smith and his staff converse and interact with them as real people and they are really thriving on it. The staff are patient and helpful with nervous parents as well! This program goes far beyond an after care solution, and we highly recommend it!

Greatest day was the day we walked though the DOJO doors. We found our second home for sure. We…read morelove our DOJO family. Sensei Otto and staff are the best mentors for your kids in the area. If you want to train real Karate then this is the place.

I have been going to this dojo for a about six months now…read more Sensei Bob Otto is a very kind and honorable man who puts his students first. I have seen the way he works with the younger students and to help them grow as individuals. They are not only learning karate, but also life skills. How to deal with bullies, how to stand up for themselves, and how to communicate effectively. Bob and his staff really take time with the kids to work with them and help them become the best they can be. I have also seen Sensei Bob Otto and his staff help older adults ease into Karate and the exercises and take their time with them to make sure that they're doing the katas and movements correctly, but also make adjustments if a certain movement is not working for the individual (such as causing pain or discomfort due to not being flexible enough yet - or previous injury). I personally appreciate it when Sensei Otto and staff take the time to show me the proper way to do the katas, strikes, and blocks. I also enjoy the style of karate taught here. Uechi-Ryu Karate-Do. It is a traditional Okinawan karate that is closely related to Southern Shaolin Tiger and Crane Kung Fu. The art has retained a lot of the flowing circular motions seen in Kung Fu. This karate style also shares a similar lineage to Goju-Ryu. This is a very effective karate for learning self defense. In the style there is an inherent focus on conditioning the body for balance and to be able to take hits (if one has to). The blocks learned in this style are also incredibly practical and powerful. They are circular movements and operate kind of like a parry. It takes a bit to learn to do effectively but I can't argue with the practical applications. Sensei Bob Otto also brings other things into the mix to keep things interesting. Sensei Otto is a certified Krav Maga instructor and has some experience in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. He is also a fan of boxing / kick-boxing and will often include drills and techniques from Krav Maga, BJJ, and Boxing/Kickboxing to switch things up, keep things interesting, and as he says "To add more tools to your toolbox". Everyone has been very kind and supportive and has offered me help when I have struggled. This dojo has a very nice family-like atmosphere. I always look forward to classes and always enjoy myself. If you're interested in the martial arts, this is definitely a great place to check out!
