There was a fisherman protest scheduled for 2pm April 1st and all ferry rides were canceled that day. Not only did they neglect to inform tick holders, they canceled every ferry ride for the entire day...even the ones scheduled well before 2pm. Our ferry was scheduled for 7:30 and if not for our taxi driver canceling our ride to the ferry terminal at 5:30am, we would not have known. My fiance and I ended up spending $120 booking last minute flights so that we wouldn't be stranded. Terrible customer service. Unethical business practices as well as we received no refund for our ticket. The ferry company used the protest as an excuse to force tourists to spend more money on the local economy, by making them pay for flights. Absolutely disgusting. Vieques is beautiful. Bioluminescent bay is magic. But unless you can afford to fly to the island, I would suggest skipping. It's just too unreliable and sketchy. read more

Don't know why this terminal is rated so poorly? my friends and I had a pleasant ride to vieques just today with no issues at all. the ferry is a cheap and convenient way for you to be able to experience the serene waters of this area of PR. port on either ends has plenty of sitting space for people waiting. parking is a bit of a walk (on the main island) but overall it's not a problem either (only $15/day!). highly recommend the bioluminescent lagoon! read more

This is by far the worst communication ports of transportation Ive ever come in contact with. Lets start off with the fact that Ive must have called them over 15 times and no answer. The phone just rings, , however when you get there they have a shitload of workers present (which is actually pretty nice) only they don't do shit! According to the website the tix were only 2 dollars. They don't tell you on their website that everything is not included. They literally charge you for every item you bring on board ( Coolers, luggage, sleeping bags, bikes, baby carriage, etc... They also do not express that you cannot bring your vehicle on the Ferry. Only Residents can do that. Residents have preference for everything, meaning if they're only 2 tickets left and the resident shows you're pretty much assed out. Ive heard stories of ppl staying stranded. My suggestion is that you book round trip with the return being 3pm. I also suggest you book a car rental to drive around Vieques otherwise you will find yourselves roaming there Streets with a bunch of Wild Horses. . It doesn't make sense....the amount of ppl that go to Vieques daily and this port cannot provide frequent trips. I was ready to leave at 12 and needed to wait until 3pm. I basically went to a local bar to chill. Due to the lack of miscommunication from their website i ended up without transportation in Vieques and nervous about how I would return.This especially sucks from Tourists coming from the States that have no family in Vieques. So, after hearing all the horror stories online, from other tourists and the locals, I definitely had some anxiety. However, after 4 trips, it really isn't that bad. Tips: 1.) Buy ticket in advance (if possible) 2.) Arrive early (about an hour) 3.) Be patient Also, be aware the ferry terminal at Cieba and Vieques are very different. Vieques requires a bit more planning and patience. Buying tickets online are a few bucks more but you bypass the lines and avoid standing in the heat. Just when I thought the ferry systems couldn't get worst than the one in Ceiba, I was proven wrong!! The Vieques terminal was ATROCIOUS. We arrived there early to make sure that we had a ride back to the main island. As 6:30PM approached, late arrivals approached the front of the gate as the ferry could be seen heading to the dock. My friends and I got off our seats and ran that way because we didn't want to be left behind AGAIN. When we got to the front of the line, a lady that worked there told all of us there would be the last to board. She was going to make sure that everyone that had been sitting waiting would go on first. We explained we had been there for a while and were concerned with being left behind. She assured us that wouldn't be the case. The ferry was ready to be boarded, one of the patrols opened the gate to allow all the late arrivals to board first. All the people that had been patiently sitting down ran towards the ferry. We were then told that the ferry was full and that we we didn't stop complaining there wouldn't be another ferry to take us back to the main island. That's what I though was out of line, they mess up and we received threats!! Guys it was BAD. A young boy was crying, a doctor showed his credentials explaining he needed to be back in San Juan, even then we didn't have answers. Another ferry ended up coming eventually. After two ferry disasters, we ended up booking a catamaran to Culebra. We couldn't risk wasting any more of our trip waiting around for a ferry, dealing with blunder after blunder from the staff members. Do yourself a favor and avoid these ferry ports if possible. read more

Always late coming or going. Runs on island time. Line in Fajardo are long. We got to Fajardo about and hour and half before. Waited in line in bags. Ferry was about 40 min late to arrive. Coming back from Vieques it was 36 min late (11am ferry left at 12pm). The locals (which seems to be anyone that "looks" local gets on first. Everyone else....just waits. Overall, for $2 it's worth it. We traveled with a 10,11,14 year old kids and two adults. Got seats on both ferries. Coming from Fajardo it is always packed. This is not a very user friendly service. They employ people 24hrs a day at each terminal to manage people waiting in line and for security, but only run 5 trips a day?!? With so many people trying to get back and forth and the government of Puerto Rico needing money, why don't they run this ferry twice as often, the only added expense would be fuel. Seems simple, but am I the only one thinking this? I think this is a disservice to all the hard working people and business here on Vieques and this beautiful island. I spent 5 days in the island and went on several tours and spent lots of time in restaurants, stores, and bars here spending money, but I won't be back for a long time because it's so difficult to get here. The first day we got up early, drove over an hour to arrive and got there the ferry was leaving what!!!! The security folks almost didn't let us through the gate to get tickets for the next ferry (4 hours later !!!!!!!!!) But we informed them we had reservation on the island then the was like okay. We decided yo get our return ticket when we bought the departure ones to be on the safe side. The ticket line had pigeon poo everywhere! !! The passenger facility has no AC has one local business near it and pigeons every where while you wait. 4 hours in the middle of nowhere in the heat. It's like hoarding cattle when they let you in/out the organization is lacking, babies screaming and folks just frustrated. Thank God we got to Vieques and back but that ferry was craziness!!!! read more

The ride from Vieques to Ceiba was smoother than the ride to Vieques. It's an inexpensive ride (just make sure to buy your return ticket ahead of time! They do sell out!) but it's the only way to get on and off Vieques, so the service isn't spectacular. It's not bad either though. Just make sure to get there early, get some decent seats, and get a barf bag if you're prone to motion sickness. Also, we bought ours a few days ahead of time, but they changed the schedule the day before and sent an email notifying us of the change. It was only 15 minutes, but that can make the difference between making and missing your ride, so make sure to watch your email and double check departure times in the morning when you get there. I recommend still getting there early since sometimes they depart before the posted time anyways read more

Impossible to describe how poorly run this operation is. The employees freely admit that they can't keep to the posted schedule, and refuse to offer any other concrete information. The thing is, it COULD be so much better - they seem to have some sort of exclusive government contract, and there's a lot of demand for the service, but the tickets are only $2.50 - if they charged a bit more perhaps they could keep the ferries repaired and running. Not sure if the rate is set by the government, or if they're just incompetent, but alas, it's dirt cheap and really awful. read more

Today I was denied entrance to the dock by security while traveling back from Vieques to the mainland. I was traveling with a legal service dog when the young lady collecting tickets and security demanded paperwork which is illegal. Once my husband spoke to them in Spanish, we were escorted to the ferry where the supervisor allowed us to board. read more

I think that leaving Vieques is easier to get on the ferry than coming to Vieques. I only went on the ferry from Vieques to Fajardo. I believe our tickets were $2.25/person. One of the security ladies was not friendly and I actually saw her smile drop when she saw me. I killed her with a smile and a peppy personality. The only way I know how to do it ;) I booked the 11:00am ferry on a Thursday and we arrived a little under an hour before the ferry arrived and purchased our ticket at the ferry terminal. They separate locals from visitors at the terminal. The ferry came a few minutes late, but it was not that bad. I would recommend you bring motion sickness pills, one thing I wish I did. Nothing intense happened, I just got queasy. There are seats inside the ferry where there is air conditioning. There is also a place where you can put luggage. You can also stand outside during the ferry ride. Inside the seats were a bit tattered, but they did the job. There was enough seats for everyone on the ferry, plus a few empty seats. The ferry ride lasted about an hour, which was great. When we arrived at the Fajadro ferry terminal, It was great to see taxi services so that we did not have to call anyone. I am not sure which method of transportation to choose, because the ferry is cheaper; however, it does take longer and from the other reviews I read you may not get on your desired ferry. But I also experienced delays with flying from SJU airport to Vieques and it was more expensive, but it was shorter times and more consistent with getting a flight. If you want to get to somewhere at a particular time I would recommend flying. If you are feeling the island life and in no rush, take the ferry. read more

BEWARE/UNFAIR! Although my husband and I are permanent residents of Vieques, the ferry dock ticket workers treat us unfair. Whenever we try to purchase tickets from Vieques to Fajardo we are told to "step aside" "not selling those tickets at this time" or "come back tomorrow". We know this treatment is due to us not "looking" like Puerto Ricans, although my husband is. Born and raised in PR, he looks Caucasian. Green eyes and white hair. What infuriates us is, after standing in line for 45 minutes plus on any given day and having the person in front of us in line and behind us granted any ticket they wish to purchase, when we step to the window we are treated rudely and told any of the above mentioned reasons as to why we must "step aside". This is ridiculous! What is even more frustrating is when trying to file a complaint with the Vieques/PR Port Authority, every one of their phones are conveniently disconnected. We have never been rude to these untrained ticket masters, always polite to them. So cannot fathom the way they are allowed to treat anyone who doesn't fit the "look" of a Puerto Rican. We need to cross to the mainland for purchases that are not available in Vieques. However, in the future, we will be purchasing airline tickets out of Vieques. On a plus note, the Fajardo to Vieques ferry ticket employees are friendly and always eager to assist. We traveled to Vieques from Fajardo on a Friday morning at the beginning of peak season and had no issues whatsoever. We made sure to arrange our transportation to the ferry terminal to get us there at least an hour ahead of time (we highly recommend Luquillo taxi service), and we also had our round trip ferry tickets in advance thanks to our great driver. The taxi ride itself was a little pricey but still way better than the price of airfare/a taxi to either airport. The ferry takes over an hour but both our journey to the island and our return journey were pretty close to on-schedule. On our return journey (Tuesday afternoon on the eve of Christmas Eve) we needed to switch our 3PM tickets to 11AM, and the office clerk at the Vieques terminal simply wrote on our tickets and we were good to go. There was seating and air conditioning, and I slept most of the journey. I would definitely recommend the ferry to anyone who wants a (relatively) cheap day trip to some of the greatest beaches in the US, or for anyone who (like us) is traveling with luggage to spend a few days or more on the island. read more

If I could have rated it zero stars I would have. We arrived 2 hrs and 15 min prior to departures and were roughly 20 ppl from the front of the line. Guess what!?!?!?! We didn't make the cut. There are so many ppl who pay others to wait in line for them that you have no chance of getting on the ferry. It is a big racket. If you don't make reservations don't attempt to go. The parking lot also makes a killing bc they take your $5 when you are leaving after standing in line for two hours for nothing... Most disappointing part of our stay in PR. Oh and only about 6 ppl from the line to culebra made it and that line was easily four times as long as ours read more
